With Amonkhet previews starting a little earlier, we're opening up this thread for all Modern-related Amonkhet discussion. Exert! Embalm! Brick tokens! CYCLING!! You can access the full MTGS spoiler here:
When posting in this thread, remember that all forum rules and sub-forum rules still apply. By posting in this thread, you agree that you know and will follow those rules. In particular, don't flame/troll, don't discuss the banlist or banlist-related issues, and don't image leech (you must link images only to sites that allow image hosting). That said, the spamming rule will be more lenient here: it's okay to post some constructive kneejerk reactions to new cards. If it becomes a problem, staff might change that rule.
I don't know if this will see significant LE play. Most LE lists have ditched the 2-cost cyclers in favor of 1-cost cyclers, unless those cyclers are landcycling to fix mana. Does LE have a closing problem after it cascades? Demon is certainly better than most of the draft chaff that LE plays once they hit the board, but I think mana-efficiency is working against Demon. Maybe a 1-2 inclusion but probably no more and maybe less.
With the return of cycling I'm praying we get some good utility/cycling lands. I really want a life from the loam deck to be more viable in modern and that'd be a good step towards it personally.
Edit: maybe enters tapped cycling dual lands of some kind?

Come watch me stream over at my twitch channel. I play Loam Pox, Ad Nauseam, and jank in modern on MTGO.
Miscalculation reprint anyone? That would be a welcome addition to Modern. It might be a bit too hopeful though, even if Stoddard has been talking about swinging the pendulum to stronger answers.
Brick counter cards probably aren't good enough, but they could be if they're powerful enough to support some kind of proliferate/counter deck.
Cycling is back, players of living end/unburial rites rejoice. I'll be surprised if we don't get a few playable cycling cards.
Embalm seems very strong, even ignoring janky things like interaction w/ the populate mechanic or second harvest they're at a minimum guaranteed 2 bodies. Unless they really nerf these to balance the mechanic I'm betting at least 1 or 2 can break into modern.

My Decks:
UG Merfolk RG 8-Whack BWG Abzan midrange GRB Living End UWB Spirit Control
GU Kruphix's "Hug Assassin" RW Kalemne's "Play Fatties and Hope for the Best!" BUGW Atraxa's "All counters, all the time"
I think Oracle's Vault could be a card that get's run in Modern.
Not sure if that Exert will have an impact on modern, might be one or two cards that see play but the mechanic will not spawn a new archetype. I think Embalm could be interesting, depending on how many cards have it....will have to wait and see.
I can see Oracle's Vault getting a deck built around it. I might have to try Fling out in my 8-Whack Goblin deck, can see where Flining a Piledriver for 10 could be good or fling Zada Hedron and other gobbies for a big finish when there are blockers.
I mean, Fling is a reprint, so it was an option for a long time now, but I wouldn't see why you'd play it in 8-Wack over Goblin Grenade. It doesn't work as well with Zada, Hedron Grinder as you think, since the sacrifice is part of the cost and doesn't target. You can fling a creature at all of your other creatures, but that doesn't help you.
Oracle's Vault is too expensive and too slow to see Modern play.

Yeah, I forgot that Fling's been around for while and I was curious if it even worked with Zada. I was thinking the Oracle's Vault was 2 mana when I posted that but it's 4, so not so good. If you could turn 1-2 the Vault it would be good.
In thinking about running the vault as a 1 of in dice factory for some added card draw. The deck might be able to abuse the card a bit even though it is very expensive. Wish it used charge counters.
It's too mana intensive, but I like how Trueheart Duelist's mummy token is a Zombie and still a Human. Shenanigans with Xathrid Necromancer abound! I'm also interested in how 1 body = 3 zombies, but eh, it's Magic.

Zombies bite other things make more zombies! Makes plenty of sense to me. Then, I like zombies so not much explanation is needed.

That is such an eloquent answer to the soft counters turn bad problem in modern. Good counter early and when it is dead you can cycle it. Love it. Hopeful for tkhis to get reprinted in this set.
I'll have to see the reminder text on embalm when it comes out. For now it seems like it does not trigger Prized Amalgam or Vengevine, so that knocks it down a peg.
Oracle's Vault takes too long, and too much mana, to hit 3 brick counters. Until then, it's basically Jayemdae's Tome with a cheaper activation cost and more restrictive cast timings.
Oracle's Vault looks like it's in between Outpost Siege and Jayemdae Tome. I have to admit that 2 (for the Vault) is significantly less than 4 (for the Tome), though.
Archfiend of Ifnir is not better than Pale Recluse for Living End or even Jungle Weaver : it has to be hardcasted to do something effective, or after a turn you cascaded into Living End. It is playable, but not sure if it's a good fit. However, it's fun to have some new tool for us
Hmm Dusk and Dawn are seemingly confirmed now with the art in todays article. Miasma Mummy is slightly above bulk, but it is still outclassed by Rotting Rats so it won't even cut it in Zombie decks. The extra 1/1 stats won't help it.
And would just like to comment.. thos embalmed cards look int eresting. Would have to agree with whato thers said.. maybe there would be one or two embalmed that would be st rong enough for Modern.
I think Oracle's Vault could be a card that get's run in Modern.

Oracle's Vault is a poor rate for Modern. 6 mana to draw 1 card isn't very good.
I have a feeling the power level of the set will be depressed with a few key card meant to shake standard. The former avoids things getting out of hand and the latter is simply necessary. Although power distribution between cards isn't like it used to be so all the commons and uncommons could easily be junk either way
Sam Stoddard said in a recent article about standard that they would stop posting decks from the Future Future League going forward. They would simply be so completely different from the real world since they did not predict the bans, and they thought BFZ (And Gideon) would rotate. So whatever they have in Amonkhet to play a special role in Standard would have been aimed at a very different Standard.
Interesting... Mindcensor in at rare. Great reprint itself, but moreover, it's an already-spoiled Invocation that is also in the main set. This means it's possible that other Invocations are also in the main set, not just Mindcensor. If so, that opens up the possibility of Counterspell, Containment Priest, Daze, Divert, etc.
Definitely not saying any one of these will happen. But Mindcensor's confirmation opens up all those possibilities.

Fatal push, to a certain extend renegade rallier.
We will se one modern playable card with the new mechanics, just in order to sell the sett in standar.

Archfiend of Ifnir looks playable in Living End, replacing Jungle Weaver or Twisted Abomination. And Sixth Sense can replace Keen Sense in Bogles if you don't want to spend $2 on a Planar Chaos uncommon.
