This thread is meant to help new players who have decided to build a Modern deck after opening some MM 2017 packs, by telling them what decks they can work towards building with the cards they've opened. The experienced players either already have the cards they need, or know what decks they can build.
Please keep the following in mind:
- You will have to buy cards from other sets to complete your deck.
- Tiers exist. If you care about winning, do your own research to find out if the decks are competitive enough for you. I put the more competitive decks in the main spoiler and the lower-tier/unconventional ones under "Honorable Mentions".
- Any card listed as "staple" or "SB card" is played in a wide variety of decks. I'm not going to list out all decks that use those cards, for the sake of brevity. You don't have to build a deck just because you opened a staple; you can sell/trade it for other cards that you want and work with those instead. Since it's a staple, finding a counterparty should not be too hard.
- The cards don't appear with equal frequency in the decks that they're played in. SB cards and high-CMC cards usually don't appear as 4-ofs. Ranger of Eos, for example, is only a 1-of in Death's Shadow Jund.
- Don't fixate on one deck just because you opened one card that it plays. This is the equivalent of getting "married to your first pick", to use the Limited expression. If you open a Tarmogoyf, you might be thinking "hah, I'm on my way to a full Jund deck now". The truth is you're still 3 Goyfs, 4 Bobs, 4 Lilianas, and Lord knows how many lands away from Jund. To make matters worse, Jund is not a deck that easily accepts budget substitutes - "I'll just play Glint-Sleeve Siphoner until I get my Bobs" doesn't work. Not to put you off playing Jund, but just know what you're getting into if you decide to build it.
- Don't let commons/uncommons dictate what you build. Most of the value in any given deck lies in the rares and mythics. To continue the Jund example, if you open a bunch of Terminates and Inquisition of Kozilek, you're still a long way off building it.
For new players, if they are in white they should play 4 path to exile. It will help them awnser most threats.
If they are in black, they should play 4 inquesition of Kozilek.
If they are in blue they should play 4 serum visions.
One of the cheapest decks you can build is gifts storm. The only card not reprinted is manamorphose. Pick up 4 balars from standar. For the manabase, storm can really survive on most nudget cards. Shivan reef comes to mind. (Gift Storm is an established deck, you should google it. It is fun to play, but boring to play against. Byer beware.)
Signets are good for aceleration and manafix if you as a new player. Especially if you have a big mana curve, as most new players decks do.
If your deck can run and support 4 blood moon, you will get a lot of 'free winn' from opponents who get mana screwed, while you are prepeared for it. Particularly with signets.
