Personally, my own favorite decks are more rogue decks than mainstream as I prefer to play modern magic more like how "pro" wrestling is done. Don't just build to win, but build to stall, make great moments in the game, and have finishers to close it out. Outside of people who basically play like MTG bounty / prize hunters most people want to play to have fun even at competitive matches and it can be hard to do that with a hyper aggressive competitive play pool.

I play Genesis Wave/Nykthos because it feels so sweet to generate like 15 mana and then Hoof there it is. Chaining Burning-Tree Emissarys together is also pretty fun.
Even though the deck folds to things like Whipflare and early bolts on the mana dorks. And having Genesis Wave get gotten by Spell Queller makes me sad, but I still love to play it.

Thanks for reminding me, I got to get back to building that nykthos deck. Mono-green devotion is a fun deck to play and the reprinting of Craterhoof behemoth has made it a lot cheaper to build (at least I hope).

I had wanted to get into modern for a long time to play competitive 60 card instead of just Commander (even though I did have a great competitive Commander group) so when I ended up with some spare money after a New Years gig January 20-6 and found out I could put together mono green elves for around $100 I did it. I already really loved elves in Commander and the deck seemed really powerful with heritage Druid and the such. I started goldfishing it a bunch then eventually took it to my local shop and went 3-1 losing to a missed Nettle Sentinel trigger against Naya burn I was pretty hooked. I kept playing and was consistently going 3-1 and 4-0. Obviously I had off nights even going 1-3 and 0-4 back to back weeks once, but the deck was well positioned in the meta and I was good at it. Then, after amassing a bunch of store credit and trading for Shaman of the Packs, someone sold the shop a playset of Gilt-Leaf palace and I was able to put together GB finally. I have been through so many iterations of GB, discard heavy sideboard, Lead the Stampede vs Chord in main and side I have basically settled my list out with 2 flex slots in the board that are still changing. Through all this, playing it for over a year, and building Merfolk and TitanShift, I still love elves and turn to it as my competitive deck of choice. It's the perfect combination of fun to play, blazing fast, and capable of powerful plays (like the turn 3 shaman of the pack, cast company in response to the trigger and flip double shaman for game I got last week) for me.
Affinity - playing it because it's fast and the evil robots tend to beat the crap out of most other aggro decks. And I like the alternate win con inkmoth nexus, ah glory to new phyrexia for compleating the blinkmoths. XD!! Although of course, can't bring this deck every week to FNM, because if I bring it too often I start seeing terrible things like Hurkyl's Recall, Creeping Corrosion, and Shattering Spree. >___<

Genesis Wave can't be countered by Spell Queller unless you're doing it for X = 1. When Genesis Wave is on the stack and you have paid X, the converted mana cost is the X (that you used in that particular instance) and GGG. Now if it's in your hand and not on the stack, then the converted mana cost is 3, so cards like Inquisition of Kozilek work well in this instance. Just want to make sure that no one at your FNM is cheating you.

I enjoyed Tron a lot. I played GW at first, before the OGW Eldrazi. Then I was told about the UW and GR versions, and I played both for a long time. With the GR version, playing seemingly absurd cards in terms of converted mana cost (Karn, Wurmcoil) as early as turn 3 felt just great. And the mixture of combo plus lategame inevitability with the UW Gifts Ungiven version was fun to play, too. Winning out of one card alone was just hilarious.
After the banning of Eye of Ugin (should have been Eldrazi Temple in my eyes), I turned away from the deck for some time. But now I recollected what I need for the GR version, and again it is a real powerhouse that wins against a big share of the current meta.
I play elves and used to play GWb Little Kid because I like to run over players trying to do cute things.
Now I'm really into UW Control because I just want to cast Ojutai as many times as humanly possible. Dragonlord Ojutai is one of my absolutely favorite cards of all time.
U-Tron here, the stars kinda alligned. I was looking for a new modern deck. Opened a promo planar bridge at prerelease and a masterpiece plat angel in draft, and looked for decks that could run either. U-Tron is probably the only deck that can run both without being a major mistake. I love the idea of tronlands, and love casting big spells, but am not a fan of the linearness of Gx Tron builds so this archetype really suits exactly what I want to do.
While I actually started as a control player in standard (Rav-Theros) when I moved to modern the deck I really wanted to play was Abzan Midrange, but that is an expensive deck that took me time to put together. So while I was working on that I played Soul Sisters. Mono-white decks have always been my 'guilty pleasure". ANyway, I like the G/B/x midrange archtype because I like midrange decks as a playstyle. I like the grinding out, almost dirty feeling of waging a war of attrition on another deck, picking them apart and riding your big mean goyf to victory. I switch between Jund and Abzan now and while in general I prefer the colors of Abzan, Jund just grinds man. I also like how it flies closer to the ground so that bob can play too. But I do miss the rhinos and souls of abzan
I also play the Death and Taxes deck, I started with Eldrazi and taxes but recently switched to a monowhite list, going back to the beginning. I think I like D n' T because it's another attrition based deck, it just attacks it from a different angle.

When I first started playing Magic like ~20 years ago I also played with RGB because of the cheap red, big creatures in green and black had zombies and death - that was cool! These of course were days of 100 card decks and it was perfectly fine to play 6 Lightning Bolts because you had them.
That's part of the reason I built a Jund deck when I got back into the game - reminded me a bit of those old Junior High/High School times. Of course Jund is a much better deck then any of the janky ones I played back then.
The first deck I really played when I go back in though was Eldrazi Tron. I've always loved the gigantic monsters of HP Lovecraft and the Eldrazi reminded me of that.

Jund/Junk is my favorite deck to play for several reasons:
1) It's the closest thing to a 50/50 deck in the format. I hate playing rock/paper/scissors decks where I win or lose depending on the matchup.
2) It does well on the draw, so I'm not at as much of a disadvantage if I lose the dice roll.
3) It has an answer to just about everything.
4) It leads to grindy games and grindy matches, often times going to a competitive game 3, which is exciting.
5) it's kind of like playing multiple decks, since the deck plays different in different matches. It's a defensive deck in some matches, an offensive deck in others.

Years ago, I played a Psychatog/Upheaval deck that I loved. Combo/Control is where my heart is.
During RTR standard, I played Sphinx's Revelation control, which was a pretty satisfying couple of years.
Now in Modern I play Grixis Kiki Control as a combo/control deck that plays the resource game and tries to win with Kiki/Deceiver Exarch or Snapcaster/Manland beats.
I like the head-games that become possible when almost your whole game is instant speed and reactive. The role you play as a control mage where you're there to stop your opponent. I like the combo potential because when you're ready to close the door, you're shutting it fast and even when you're just about dead, you sometimes find a way to just win.
Now that WotC seems more willing to print playable control spells again, I'm looking forwards to better countermagic especially.

I picked up Kiki-Chord after watching Hoogland stream early versions of it just prior to BFZ release. It quickly became my favorite deck to play and was the first Modern deck that I actually enjoyed playing. I never feel completely out of a game before it starts because of the deck I'm playing, and so many people don't understand what Kiki-Chord is trying to do or how to stop it.
My absolute favorite Modern deck is UR Storm. Yeah, I know, I'm that guy. I love the deck because every game plays out like a puzzle (which is ironic, because I can't STAND actual puzzles). How do I play around my opponent's interaction? Should I pull the trigger as soon as humanly possible, or wait a turn or two to have a bit more protection? Should I try and kill with Grapeshot, or go for the 8-Storm Empty the Warrens I've got in my hand? What should I put in my Gifts Ungiven pile (when I'm not grabbing the standard Pyretic Ritual, Desperate Ritual, Manamorphose, Past in Flames pile)? Every game plays out differently, and I absolutely love that. Its probably why I rarely touch my burn deck and mostly just lend it out to friends/new players who want to try something new for the night. I'm also slowly working on foiling the deck out as my pet project!
