It's possible that Strix is too good for modern. That in mind, it would be a boon for UBx control and tezzerator. The worst case scenario is it just slots into affinity (although i don't know if it's mana can support it.) Stix has proven itself in legacy and will definitely make a splash in modern
While the chief is a lot weaker than strix I still think it's worth mentioning. Sure Pia and Kiran are strictly better, but maybe a goblin deck could use this.
This crafty ninja is definitely string enough for modern, the question is if it's better than phantasmal image. If there's some kind of deck that wants to abuse the ninjutsu ability, it could see some play.
Now we get into the first card I believe would be banned. Shardless is incredibly powerful and with Ancestral Visions in the format and Bloodbraid elf banned I have no doubt this would be banned.
Graveyard hate attached to a 3/4 flying body for 4 mana is a pretty good deal, but by the time you get to 4 mana against something like dredge it may be too late.
Both of these cards are pretty strong, with Predation being the clear best. it can slot into aggro decks, while graves in token decks. They may not be strong enough but the low cost is not something to ignore for these effects.
While the command zone ability is just flavor text, I do think that derevi is strong enough for modern, the problem is it's colors. The only deck I could see this in is bant spirits or a similar company deck.
A cube all star, this snake charmer may be strong enough to slot into BGx or BW tokens. As a constant supply of 1/1 deathtouchers can stop ground attackers in their tracks.
Without a card like Dark Depths this loses a lot of it's appeal, but there might be some scenario where it is worth paying 4 mana for. Tempt with Vengeance
This is an incredibly efficient token producer, and while it is not an instant the creatures have haste.
Now here's a standout card. It might seem like it's too strong in modern, but unlike legacy, your life total matters a lot more. Between shocks, fetches, phyrexian mana, and thoughtseize. In addition that this will usually be used against aggro decks who are pressuring your life total. Deluge is probably balanced for modern.
It seems to be a theme of versatile white removal in these products. Absent is great against fetches and can be a general catch all. Imagine using this on a ensnaring bridge in response to a mill trigger against a lantern player.
I'm only going to be mentioning noteworthy cards from now on. So keep that in mind.
Planechase 2012
Baleful Strix
It's possible that Strix is too good for modern. That in mind, it would be a boon for UBx control and tezzerator. The worst case scenario is it just slots into affinity (although i don't know if it's mana can support it.) Stix has proven itself in legacy and will definitely make a splash in modern
Beetleback Chief
While the chief is a lot weaker than strix I still think it's worth mentioning. Sure Pia and Kiran are strictly better, but maybe a goblin deck could use this.
Maelstrom Wanderer
Yes it's 8 mana, but I have a soft spot for this card. Maybe it could slot into scapeshift.
Sakashima's Student
This crafty ninja is definitely string enough for modern, the question is if it's better than phantasmal image. If there's some kind of deck that wants to abuse the ninjutsu ability, it could see some play.
Shardless Agent
Now we get into the first card I believe would be banned. Shardless is incredibly powerful and with Ancestral Visions in the format and Bloodbraid elf banned I have no doubt this would be banned.
Commander 2013
Angel of Finality
Graveyard hate attached to a 3/4 flying body for 4 mana is a pretty good deal, but by the time you get to 4 mana against something like dredge it may be too late.
Curse of Predation and Curse of Shallow Graves
Both of these cards are pretty strong, with Predation being the clear best. it can slot into aggro decks, while graves in token decks. They may not be strong enough but the low cost is not something to ignore for these effects.
Darksteel Mutation
This is an interesting piece of removal but it's probobly not strong enough for modern.
Derevi, Empyrial Tactician
While the command zone ability is just flavor text, I do think that derevi is strong enough for modern, the problem is it's colors. The only deck I could see this in is bant spirits or a similar company deck.
From the Ashes
Now this is a card I can get behind, a budget alternative to blood moon that may even act as a 1 sided Armageddon in some scenarios.
Ophiomancer
A cube all star, this snake charmer may be strong enough to slot into BGx or BW tokens. As a constant supply of 1/1 deathtouchers can stop ground attackers in their tracks.
Restore
This card is efficient, but in modern there isn't a deck like lands and Loam exists.
Sudden Demise
I like this card, a 1 sided board wipe can be quite strong. (Granted it isn't very good against affinity.)
Tempt with Discovery
Without a card like Dark Depths this loses a lot of it's appeal, but there might be some scenario where it is worth paying 4 mana for.
Tempt with Vengeance
This is an incredibly efficient token producer, and while it is not an instant the creatures have haste.
Toxic Deluge
Now here's a standout card. It might seem like it's too strong in modern, but unlike legacy, your life total matters a lot more. Between shocks, fetches, phyrexian mana, and thoughtseize. In addition that this will usually be used against aggro decks who are pressuring your life total. Deluge is probably balanced for modern.
True-Name Nemesis
Of all the cards that would be banned true name is the first to come to mind.
Unexpectedly Absent
It seems to be a theme of versatile white removal in these products. Absent is great against fetches and can be a general catch all. Imagine using this on a ensnaring bridge in response to a mill trigger against a lantern player.
Conspiracy
Coercive Portal
A powerful draw engine. Maybe tron could play it.
Council's Judgement
As a boggles player this makes me sad, that said more efficient answers is probably a good thing for modern. This is definitely a top contender.
Dack Fayden
Deck is strong, but I don't think he would see much play. Unlike legacy and vintage the reliance on powerful artifact in modern is not high.
Grenzo, Dungeon Warden
Grenzo sees a little play in legacy goblins, so it will likely do the same in modern.
Tyrant's Choice
4 damage for 2 mana is good. This might be just what mardu burn needs.
