I've only really played standard since that's all my friends want to play, and it's short term cheaper. But my playgroup has recently gotten more relaxed with what decks we play - they used to complain when I played decks from the old standard a week after rotation but now I seem to be able to get away with janky modern decks
Anway, exploring all the options out there was far more exciting and interesting than with the limited card pool in stardard and I've become interested in the format recently. But I'm well aware due to the higher power level available what's considered playable is very strict.
So while the potential for creativity and a large card pool excites me, the fact that you are more or less restricted to highly efficient spells with at the very maximum 4cmc does not.
Although my friends might accept me playing a trashy modern deck, I can't imagine my friends embracing it - for example their view of Commander is it's only for people who've played the game the better part of a decade and have a huge collection
So my question is, whether there is space in Modern for a more casual play style and if so where I can find it?
Well from what i read, your friends aren't cool so if you want to play a cool janky deck, find other friends who won't care. I know I wouldn't.
Modern is absurdly expensive, so if it's just to please "friends" - it's a waste of time and money.
From what you are saying I wouldn't bother with a competitive modern deck, they are being really expensive and unless you are playing on playing in competitive events I wouldn't bother. However you could look into brewing some deck up in your group using the modern ban list, there is a lot of fun you could have in that space.
On the Commander front, I would look into the pre-made decks. They are normally really good and you honestly don't need to change much to optimize them.

In play: Jund Death Shadow, Grixis Control, Eldrazi Stompy, Ponza
In the yard: RUG Delver, Kiki-Chord, Grixis Twin, Mardu Control, Smallpox, Jeskai Control, Jeskai Delver, Assault Loam, Elves, Deathcloud, Eggs, Storm
Deck creation and Dev. Competitive are your best shots, or budget for cheap. But these forums are about competitive decks, so if your trying to do casual, just because, or something, it wont fly. At that point go to the casual sub.
Deck creation has stuff like "mono white soilders" or "5 color scarecrows" which arent 'super viable.' but you can build decks there. You just have to be open if someone says on the 5 color deck you should run a shock/fetch mana base, because its still about trying to be the best 5 color scarecrows it can be.
