Wait. Does Invasive Surgery have a delirium effect that is the same search and remove effect as Slaughter Games but for just a blue, at instant speed? I know it needs a sorcery to counter and the 4 card types for delirium, but that seems a little pushed. Maybe they felt they could do that since a counter restricted to just sorceries isn't playable.
They can get away with pushing this because in standard (which they design for) there usually isn't soceries worth countering.
True. But I'm also gonna take back the "pushed" part. I forgot about Surgical Extraction and Extirpate. There's certainly precedence for this effect at 1CMC instant speed. Oops.
I mean I will be trying it as a 1 of on sideboard since it does help with combo matchups in modern (scapeshift, ad nauseum, storm, reanimator)

Still hoping for some good Madness Card/Discard Outlet. This way, we could see if a BR (or any variant) Madness Deck could be viable to play in Modern.

Modern Decks:WRGThe Colors of FireGRW || CUBRAge of Ultron (Affinity - Under Construction)RBUC
Interesting card. I don't think it's good enough for modern but it's a new card so lets talk about it.
I really want to test that in UW titan control. nearly all the creatures in the deck are 3 cmc or less and spending extra mana to draw a card is nice when you want to find your titans or more creatures. kinda like it in something like deadguy ale.
The power level of some of these spoiled cards does not have me optimistic for dear Innocent Blood. I can already see the delirium version now...
There's always hope. Maybe they will make it although they could do this a while ago as it's perfectly fine card for Modern and fun one as well.
Rosewater has said that Innocent blood fits flavor and it's okay for standard. I expect innocent blood in Eldrich Moon since it has obvious Liliana flavor.

There's often a COUPLE decent cards per new mechanic that can become constructed playable...
Ktk is already complaining about the set's powerlevel when most of the cards that we have seen are from people who illegally opened packs of SOI up and leaked commons and uncommons. We already have two modern playable cards imho (eerie interlude, Heir of Falkenrath) and they have spoiled like a few rares. Give it some time we still have 200 cards to get through.

Pick the Brain is bad. What's worse than playing an extraction effect? Answer: playing an extraction effect that requires that your opponent draws the card that you want to extract.
Heir of Falkenrath is not too exciting. 3 power on a 2-drop is nothing special, as plenty of Zoo's creatures will have you know. And only being able to discard once means that it's not that good of a madness enabler. I think the best deck for it is an aggro deck with Gravecrawler or Bloodghast - Gravecrawler isn't absolutely terrible to hardcast.
I think Mentor of the Meek is betterbecause it has lower cost of ability than Bygone Bishop has. 1 mana is important difference although there are more creatures with cmc 3 or less than the ones with power 2 or less (this is not that important than cheaper ability cost though).
Each is situationally better than the other. Bygone Bishop is more mana intensive, but allows you to cash in its triggers when its most convenient (likely when you have run out of things to cast as opposed to while you're trying to cast them). Bishop also has a better body and flying. Id say the most important aspect of Mentor of the Meek is the fact that it can trigger off creatures entering play (as opposed to just being cast), so it synergizes more with Norin the Wary and token generators.
If there are any decent aggressive Madness cards, I can see Heir of Falkenrath being interesting. At the very least its a good black creature, which it seems like there is a shortage of, worth keeping on the radar at least.
3 power that flies on a splashable two drop in Black is pretty good in my opinion, but you're going to need to be getting value from the discard at least occasionally to make it worth it I'd think.
Yea, was looking at this card and comparing it to Skaab Ruinator. The fact that Geralf's Masterpiece works at instant speed and its ability isn't UU is a plus. Could work in my Bridge from Below deck...
Early official spoilers so far are looking kinda jank.
But it's the jank I'm ok with. Even Pick the Brain is kinda cute, it's not looking good for us (unless we're underestimating the ease of hitting Delirium) but it's a cute twist on Lobotomy. Hell it's actually one blue mana cheaper, and all you lose is the ability to gank nonbasic lands!
BBishop has an edge over MentorM by leaving you clues to crack at your own discretion as well as having flying. On the other hand MentorM being an ETB triggered guy means there's all kinds of shenanigans that you could do with him, and BBishop triggering on casts was probably a nerf against Collected Company spam strats.
I'd still rather resolve Ranger of Eos than either of them, though. Personal preference, but I like Ranger's ETB than the promises of cantrip value from BBishop or MentorM.
Also Geralf's Masterpiece is hilarious. I wonder if it's a plant for Hellbent or something in the near future. It could actually become unironically playable in the event WotC does a dumb and does alternative cost Flashback spells again, so you use your graveyard as an extension of your hand all dredgelike. Pair with Life from the Loam, get value?
Heir to Falkenrath seems like botha decent aggro card and an ok madness enabler. Albeit for one madness card.
Incorigible Youth seems pretty good. I think reckless wurm is still the better card. Trample is very relevant in getting damage trough chump blockers and the extra thoughness keeps it out of bolt range. Still glad the print aggressively costed madness cards enablers like this. Geralf's masterpiece makes me optimistic that blue gets some madness action. The masterpiece might even become playable if life from the loam has some decent lands to work with in the future.

Investigate (Put a colorless Clue artifact token onto the battlefield with "2, Sacrifice this artifact: Draw a card.")
Is "Clue" the name or the type? I ask because I want to know if these tokens can be stopped by Pithing Needle. Judging by the wording on other cards that produce tokens, I imagine Clue is the type and the token itself is nameless so it can't be stopped by Needle. Correct?

With tokens the card name is also its type. So yes, Pithing Needle should stop these. Good news for Lantern players everywhere.
Mecha-Griselbrand feels like a trap card. Ok, so you get to play it from your graveyard at a reduced cost, and what is your payoff for doing that? A 7/7 flier, at best. We've seen at least three Abyssal Persecutor knockoffs which have failed to do anything in the format. Being a big flier with bigger stats than normal isn't enough.
What might be enough is being a big recurrable flier. That's one thing Geralf's Masterpiece has going for it. Still, the recursion costs a hefty amount of cards, cards that you might rather be casting instead of pitching.
Incorrigible Youths is unplayable. 3 mana and dies to Bolt.

First the Prices thread, now here: you just really want to misinterpret what I'm saying. I'm fine with the set's power level on its own. I'm more nervous about the set's power level in relation to Blood itself. This would be like wanting a Counterspell reprint and then saying you're nervous about Counterspell's chances in some new set. That's wouldn't be a jab at the set's power level with respect to Modern as a format. The set, whether SOI or the one where we hypothetically want CS, could be quite good for Modern! It's an unfavorable analysis of the set's power level relative to that one particular card. Good Modern sets with appropriate power levels might still be inappropriate for certain reprints.

Needle can't name "Clue" or any token unless that token also has the name of an actual Magic card.

Really? I thought the type of the token was also its name, hence why Bile Blight can kill tokens enmass? In that case, declaring Clue with Pithing Needle is something that should work.

It's both in the Gatherer ruling on Needle and in the comprehensive rules.
"201.3. If an effect instructs a player to name a card, the player must choose the name of a card that exists in the Oracle card reference (see rule 108.1) and is legal in the format of the game the player is playing. (See rule 100.6.) If the player wants to name a split card, the player must name both halves of the split card. (See rule 708.) If the player wants to name a flip card's alternative name, the player may do so. (See rule 709.) If the player wants to name the back face of a double-faced card, the player may do so. (See rule 711.) A player may not choose the name of a token unless it's also the name of a card."
Man, Heir of Falkenrath is SO close to being playable I think (maybe still is?). If it was 1 CMC, it'd be a Black Delver! I don't know if being 2 CMC but easier to flip makes it still playable though (especially because it's card disadvantage as well). These other spoilers so far seem EXTREMELY lackluster so far. I'm not impressed just yet but Heir REALLY caught my eye.
