Back to back SCG Open Modern weekends! What's not to love? This is also the last major tournament before the January 18 banlist announcement, so it will undoubtedly play a role in that decision. This thread is for discussion of the SCG Open and the different decks, matches, and content we see and hear all weekend long.
We're generally more lenient in threads like this about banlist discussion and spamming, but don't go over the top. If we have to change the thread rules to rein in users, then we will. Otherwise, we like the thread to be a bit more free-form, like we're all in a big living room/game store/bar watching the event. So enjoy the Modern action and have fun discussing it!
Battles have begun at #SCGCHAR! Will Amulet Bloom continue to haunt the Modern format? What decks will show up to combat the Bloom menace? And just how powerful is the new Eldrazi deck? Join Chris VanMeter, Andrew Boswell, and the rest of SCGLive crew as we answer these questions and more!
They really like Amulet
btw: UR Twin beat BW Eldrazi in that R1 feature match, 2-0.
This deck is terrifying, it's just like a more streamlined, midrangey faster Tron. What's its twin matchup like?
It's really not that scary. Aggro decks like Burn, Affinity, and Merfolk are great against it.
I was speaking purely as a Jund player
Yeah, but if Eldrazi decks have too many weak matchup's, it'll fall to the wayside. Burn and Affinity aren't going anywhere, unless somehow a Sword of the Meek unban happened and the community realizes it destroys the deck (not that I'm claiming this will happen)
I do have to say, the fact Eldrazi decks inception has occurred only about a month ago and is having these good of results already is scary looking
Grixis control/midrange happened though, but then it was hated out of the meta into a permanent tier 2 status

Actually, does it? I know these decisions are made at least a week ahead of time, so it might have already been finalized for all we know.

I will say that if, as a Jund player, I had a choice between Tron and Eldrazi, I think that I would probably choose Eldrazi every time , since at least my kills spells are not completely dead against the deck!
I can't say I'm pleased to see you and must warn you I may have to do something about it.

Do they really wait until the last minute to finalize the banned list decision? I figure they would have made their choices months in advance.

Deciding months in advance seems downright absurd, and if that were the case, Birthing Pod wouldn't have gotten banned when it was because months beforehand the deck wasn't doing much.
I do know it's not at, as you say, the last minute. There was a Tweet a while ago by some Wizards employee where someone asked them if the bannings were decided yet (I think this was asked a week and a half before the announcement) and they said yes, but I can't remember who it was or exactly how far ahead it was asked. Wish I'd bookmarked it or something.

Birthing Pod did plenty years before it was banned. That said, they can make changes to their decision up until the deadline. It's unlikely that any result from this one event is going to push a card over the edge that isn't already a serious contender, though.

Except months before the banning, Birthing Pod wasn't doing much of anything; the decks people were concerned about were Delver and Burn. Sure, Pod came back with a massive resurgence, but if it was made months beforehand, they wouldn't have known that.
This is the tweet I mentioned. Bannings were announced on January 19, and this Tweet is from January 13, six days earlier. So bannings were decided on at least six days ahead of time. That's not necessarily true every time, but it does indicate that bannings (or unbannings) are probably decided a week (or more) before they actually happen.
I wish the commentators would stop babbling on about potential bannings when doing commentary. Discussing it between matches during downtime can be okay, but it's really annoying when they're doing it during a match.

Tbf, while the deck is just going through the motions with the turn 3 win, it is already between match downtime.
I am seriously starting to believe that all the players who say that the deck is not consistent are either lying through their teeth or they are just not good Amulet players. Summer Bloom seriously needs to go!

Matthew Stapleton is on UB Eldrazi.
Prepare for the Ashiok and Delay spike!
LET'S DO THIS!!
They have to jam the combo and hope they win, which isn't easy with the hand disruption and removal
or we beat them to death with fliers and hope they have nothing in the air to block with

Tron runs 7 to 8 boardwipes though
Did I miss something?
