I was playing Jund against one of my friends who was on Griselbrand Shoal, and in one of our sideboard games I managed to land a Damping Matrix, which he couldn't do anything about and he literally just sat there being beaten to death by a Tarmogoyf.
That incident got me thinking if there are any other cards that seem absurd but, for one reason or another, see virtually no play.
Anyone else know of any cards like that?

With the banning of twin comes the end of an era...
Dispel is maindeckable right now, but if you are playing blue and don't have this in your sideboard, you need a really good reason.
Rest In Peace is insane in this metagame. Leyline of the Void is too. Relic of Progenitus is actually maindeckable today, but feels fairer than sticking an RiP or Leyline against decks that rely on the graveyard.
I've always been a big fan of Extirpate and Surgical Extraction but my friends don't like the cards. I've cut them from my Abzan deck mainly because I need the slots for more specific hate.
Thragtusk is getting a little more love these days, but I still think he needs more. One of the best grindy sideboard cards, and as long as he isn't all you've got against burn, he's rather helpful there.
Gaddock Teeg is very strong in the current meta game, with uses against Twin, Bloom, Grishoalbrand, Tron, Collected Copmany/Chord, Ad Nauseam, Storm, and random control decks.
Aven Mindcensor has also been seen to be strong lately, good against Bloom and Tron, as well as decks with Chord in them. In the same vain but against other decks, Grafdigger's Cage should be in most sideboards to fight the CoCo decks as well as provide some grave interaction. I also agree that Rest in Pace is veeeeery strong in the current meta game.
Chalice of the void. Turns off ad nauseums protection, shuts down cascade combos, storm if on 2 will still hamstringing on 1, guts burn, kills bogles when on the play, turns all trons cantrips into dead weight, and is even worth bringing in against affinity. Oh, stops amulet from using pacts outside of hivemind too.
Trickbind has always been a favorite of mine. If you''re on the play, you can be a dick and shut down his/her first fetch, as well as prevent a potentially deadly ability like Viscera Seer or Elvish Piper.
I'll also throw my vote in for trickbind. Additionally. Sanctimony.

Chalice of the Void will counter their pact but it will do nothing to the copy generated by Hive Mind. You'll still copy it and have to then pay for the copy.
Source: The copies that Hive Mind's ability creates are created on the stack, so they're not "cast." Abilities that trigger when a player casts a spell (like Hive Mind's ability itself) won't trigger.
Damping Matrix and Chalice of the Void (after aggressively picking them up I quickly realized how easy is it to play around, however), which have been mentioned are always the first ones that come to mind. Any of the static effect artifact hate cards really, like Orb of Dreams, Culling Scales, Trinisphere, and Sun Droplet are worth mentioning.
Two cards worth mentioning. Memory Journey because it's the ancient grudge of graveyard hate. And one that I sometimes think about running in my Kiki-Chord sideboard for the Amulet Bloom matchup: Moonhold. If does everything I need it to and then some. Plays nice with Eternal Witness. A soft lock with Kiki-Jiki is just gravy.

I'd say Illness in the Ranks, but that card's more for any time when token tactics (or just Lingering Souls) get out of control in the meta. Otherwise there's a reasonable case to be made for coughing up the extra mana to resolve Night of Souls' Betrayal, which does see play.
I like Phyrexian Unlife against Burn. I like to think of it as gaining ten life that they can't Skullcrack or Atarka's Command. Though, they can still destroy it but they would have to bring in Destructive Revelry in order to do so, and depending on the deck you're playing, Revelry could just end up being a dead card in their hand, which is also good for you.

I think there is a fair amount of Circle of Protection cards in modern that have some good value. I just wonder sometimes why Leyline of Punishment is not more of an option in burn lists.
I'm a huge fan of Suppression Field, probably for the same reasons you love Matrix.
Pithing Needle has always put in work for me, although it's a little worse in Kolaghan's Command-heavy metagames.

I agree Rest in Peace is just gross. The only thing holding it back is white's weak feature in modern. Since RTR release I have just been perplexed by Rest in Peace's existence? Why did the RTR developers think that needed to happen? Where they afraid all the Slitherhead where going to ruin standard? That cards is just a gross amount of hate for modern graveyard strategies that are not in anyway oppressive to begin with.
Also a card that makes me wonder Nevermore and Runed Halo I love me some white enchantments so maybe I'm just biased.
Oh man, Leyline of Punishment would be so good against Kor Firewalker and the Soul Sisters deck, which would otherwise be an unwinnable match up for the Burn player.

The other day on Cockatrice, I lost against Mono Blue Tron playing RG Tron (MB Tron is supposed to be super easy for RG Tron to beat) because they played SB Squelch, which wrecked my Ghost Quarters and my Cantrip Rocks.
Also, I like Pithing Needle in my RG Tron sb quite a bit. It has a use in most matchups -- twin? Name Exarch. Griselshoal? Name Griselbrand. Infect? Name Inkmoth Nexus. Jund? Name Liliana of the Veil, Scooze, or Raging Ravine. Mirror? Name Karn, or Ugin (or in some situations, Expedition Map). Affinity? Name pretty much any card in their deck.
Dawn Charm is very good. It acts as a Holy Day which can really hurt Infect badly if they use multiple pump spells in one turn or buy you a turn against Affinity or Zoo. Additionally, it can counter most spells that Burn plays along with targeted discard like Thoughtseize. It also can regenerate your win condition when control uses Supreme Verdict. It is pretty much always useful each game.
Pithing Needle is excellent but I wouldn't consider it criminally underplayed. That being said, it shuts off Karn and Liliana. It also stops Aether Vial and Inkmoth Nexus, which is really important on turn 1.

Yet with Rest in Peace, Deathrite Shaman, and Scavenging Ooze in the format the best deck was Junk Reanimator and tied for second best was a deck that primarily won the game with Elixir of Immortality and also in tier 1 status was Aristocrats, a deck that relied heavily on creatures dying (which RIP prevents).
I once won a super grindy matchup with my Mardu deck against Twin off the back of a playset of Blind Obedience. He told me he expected me to side in Rakdos Charm. Blind Obedience not only did shut down the splinter combo, but allowed me to gnaw his life total on top of my attacks while preserving mine.

Blind Obediance does not shut down the combo, only delays it a turn. Some players think it is worth it to find a removal spell, I would rather have the additonal spell instead.
Do you have the card in the SB for some other matchup?

Actually he can still do the combo. He just needs to make the tokens during your end step. They won't be exiled because the beginning of the end step is already over. So he gets to untap with a bazillion tokens and win.
Seems like you were lucky to play against an unexperienced player.

Although it is more a general discussion about underplayed cards, but still, most of them can be played in the SB without a problem.
For myself, I found, that Sword of Fire and Ice, Elspeth, Knight-Errant and other PW are underplayed SB options.
