This is mostly just for fun, but it might get someone's creative juices brewing.
In any case, what cards looked like they *should* have helped invent new decks or combos? Why didn't they work and/or what would they need to go big?
I really wanted Return to the Ranks/Immortal Servitude/Rally the Ancestors type cards to help create a different branch of aristocrats where you just revived all your weenies with Blood Artists and sac outlets to kill in one fell swoop. Sadly, filling the graveyard that quickly was both not possible, and ineffective as far as staying alive long enough to pull it off.
Sanguine Bond + Exquisite Blood. It's bad because you need to resolve both, and then do 1 damage with both of them not being removed. Also they are both 5 mana in modern which is a fast format, so the only way to get to that point is in a control build and there are more efficient win cons.
Each enabler is just 2cc but activating Guildmage after untapping asks a lot plus you need a third card to get it going. So 4cc needed just to get on board, min 4cc after to go off.
Unfortunately there isn't anything that can easily help you get 4 visionaries on turn 4 without giving visionaries to the opponent as well with Mirrorweave, which would require you to get at least 3 creatures besides visionary on the board, and your opponent to have less than 4 creatures, which would not be easy to set up. Biovisionary is also vulnerable to lightning bolt and abrupt decay. I've been kinda hoping that Monastery Siege would help this and some other combos. The best thing about Biovisionary IMO for this kind of thing is that it's the same colors as Simic Charm and Mizzium Skin.
Early Harvest for all those ramping shenanigans. Or better yet Dictate of Karametra as a sort of one sided Marari's Wake or Heartbeat. Too bad it costs 5cmc...
There was an infinite life combo in last year's standard with Boros Reckoner, Azorius Charm, and Boros Charm. Give him lifelink and indestructible with the two charms, redirect whatever damage he takes to himself over and over. All three cards were Standard-playable by themselves, so it was kind of odd that this combo never took off.

I personally pulled this off on frequent occasions with American Control. Boros Reckoner was always a great body to stall the board and backed up by a single Aetherling, some Sphinx's Revelation, Supreme Verdict, Detention Sphere, Mizzium Mortars etc... that was one of my favorite standard control decks in a while.
"If fetch lands are reprinted I really believe they will be in allied colors (aka Onslaught fetches). If the fetch lands are reprinted you better believe that we'll all be fetching up basics. This would lead me to believe that the set after THS may have a reprint as the temples can't be fetched but it's pure speculation." - posted 03/22/2014 proved correct during Khans spoiler season.
"The set releases for fall 2015 (Blood, Sweat and Tears) and fall 2016 (Lock, Stock and Barrel). One or both of those 2 blocks (I'm betting) are going to contain either Fetch reprints or (more likely) Filter reprints. Filter lands still need a reprint. They are getting pretty high up there and it's been longer than ZEN so it makes a little more sense that Filter lands would see print earlier that fetches." - posted 03/22/2014 proved incorrect about filters coming earlier than fetches, still pending on filters in Origins block.

Project X combo variants (Crypt Champion + Saffi Eriksdotter/Phantasmal Image (copy a Crypt Champion that's already in play) + 3rd card) also never seemed to take off. Maybe getting totally hosed by a deadScavenging Ooze with G up did it in. Maybe it's being unable to go off in response to removal (the Melira Combo can go off in response to removal, while Project X is forced to go off as soon as one of its pieces ETB).
I got a Turn 3 combo with it but it is a 4 card combo.
I saw a list a few days back running it with Narcomeba and Fatestitcher in a Dredge-like list. I'm not sure what the whole plan was since I played Surgical Extraction on Narcomeba quick and played Pithing Needle on Fatestitcher. He was only left with Bloodghasts to attack before Ensnaring Bridge closed out the game after a hardcasted Golgari Troll.

Combos with splinter twin, for whatever it's worth.

Some facts of magic:
-Terror is an emotion which, when experienced, results in death.
-The pox was a disease notorious for having killed one-third, rounded up, of Europe’s population. Smallpox, on the other hand, killed only a single person.
-A person riding a horse cannot be stopped by foot soldiers, large animals, walls, archers, or even catapults.
Trade Routes + Life from the Loam was something I always wanted to work but I could never quite get it there is testing.
I will also second Null Profusion. It is so powerful but there is no way to abuse it in modern short of a dark ritual reprint.
Trade routes and life from the loam work when you have cycling lands to get value. Otherwise you can make it all work with something like seismic assault or maybe crucible of worlds. Add in meloku the clouded mirror and you get a fun if hard to play deck.

Seismic Assault and Swans of Bryn Argoll was the best deck in Standard for the last 2 months before rotation. It just seems a bit slow for Modern and Bloodbraid Elf being banned doesn't help (it cascades into Assault, acting like the 5-8th copies of Assault).
Legacy - Sneak Show, BR Reanimator, Miracles, UW Stoneblade
Premodern - Trix, RecSur, Enchantress, Reanimator, Elves https://www.facebook.com/groups/PremodernUSA/ Modern - Neobrand, Hogaak Vine, Elves

It was too clunky, and required you to splash blue in Big Boros, which was a bad deck itself. You would usually be dead before you could live the dream. Aside from that, I did at one point manage to put a gift of orzhova on boros reckoner, and make a billion life with boros charm. Still lost the game to milling out before I could get lethal on my opponent.

Pili-pala + Grand Architect
Needs a third card to use infinite mana t3. Both enablers die to bolt. I still think Grand Architect has potential though!
Heartless Summoning + 2x Myr Retriever
Infinite storm t3 but too many low-impact cards.
- Heartless Summoning
- Etherium Sculptor
- Cloud Key
- Semblance Anvil
- Intruder Alarm
- Mesmeric Orb
- Protean Hulk
- Narset, Enlightened Master

What is the combo there?
What about Dictate of Karametra is one-sided?

All of them are Combo Engines, not a combo of themselves.
