Considering you play Humans and KCI, which one do you think is more fun to play? And which one you had more success playing?
Thanks!
I am a Combo player, so you can probably guess...
KCI. Humans is actually fairly boring to me, but it just has such a quick clock with so much disruption. It's hard to turn down sometimes. I have played Humans very little. I would say that my record is 35-9 with it, but 31-4 of that was with Human Company (before Kitesail Freebooter and Unclaimed Territory came out). My record with KCI is 5-3 (2-2 and 3-1). So, I actually haven't played them at tournaments much, lol. But I have play tested them a lot.
KCI, going off, watching my opponents' brains go into sleep mode, drooling, while I furiously masturbate with KCI (I stole this from a friend who plays Dredge; not my idea originally) is my idea of FUN Magic. Maybe I am a sick man?
@tony9804 - Maybe something like Abzan Little Kid would be good for you? I'm not sure how good it is in the current meta (some friends and I were talking about it since our LGS has a lot of Hollow One), but in theory I think it could have legs.

I was active here two years ago but then I cashed out right after the unbannings of Visions and Sword since Magic didn't tickle my fancy anymore and the money was better used elsewhere. My old account was Galerion but thanks to this Twitch merge business I can't access it right now. Hopeful Curse support can help me with that.
Anyway over the last two years I tried out Elder Scrolls: Legends and Hearthstone but didn't really like them but the MTG Arena Closed Beta really reminded me how fun Magic is but I didn't play that much either. But I watched the GP/SCG Open over the weekend on Twitch and I saw that we are back in Ravnica so I got hit with nostalgia since I started playing MTG with Return to Ravnica and well now Im really interested in getting into Magic again.
I am an online only player and like I said I cashed out so right now I have 0 cards in my MTGO collection. I checked mtggoldfish and I saw that the Standard decks I would be interested in are half the the price of the Modern decks. Well if that's so I might as well just get into Modern again directly and save me the hassle that comes with Standard.
Im a Midrange/Control player at heart. I like having answers to stuff, grinding people out and simply playing with good cards.
Things have changed in two years but Jund and UW Control are still kicking and that makes me happy. Getting both of them is out of the question. I can't justify spending that much on MTG again but one of them should be possible in the foreseeable future. Jund is a bit more expensive than UW but that's still OK.
Both are kinda allrounder decks that don't dominate but don't fall over helpless either which is what Im looking for in a deck and online Jund is just a tad more played than UW so I have a really tough time deciding them. Especially since I can't judge the impact that a few new tools like Assassin's Trophy for example have.
I hope you are able to get your old screen name back. I think I remember you, Galerion. Midrange dude, lol.
I think personally that UW is better, but Jund has some play nowadays. I would put Jund in the Tier 2 category, while UW is definitely Tier 1. Good luck and welcome back!

It's tough really. I love the color black in MTG but after looking at a few games being played out having counterspells really seems to help out with all the stuff you can face. I know how infuriating it is to play all the discard and disrupt you opponent only to be topdecked out of the game and having no way of dealing with that. It also looks like Teferi, Hero of Dominaria and Jace, the Mind Sculptor have been a few of the missing pieces for UW to thrive.
So I guess UW it is and who knows? Maybe Wizards finally makes a few really good Dimir cards instead of giving all the good stuff to Golgari so playing Esper might become a worthwhile endeavor. After all green and red are actually my least favorite colors
Jund's very playable, there was indeed an article on it at SCG.
UW is quite legit, and if your into 'fair' decks those are certainly your best midrange/control options.
Blue Moon is an option if you are a self loathing masochist, who desires a return to the elder days of greatness...but wont accept that those days are gone.
I think I will pass on Blue Moon. To be honest I never liked the UR shell that Twin used and which also pretty much every UR deck uses. Its stuff is too limited for my tastes. It does have its strengths obviously that's why it's played but it's not something for me.
I hate for example enchantments hitting the table and knowing that there is no card in my 75 that can actually destroy it, having to waste two burn spells on one creature because it's too big or being low on life and having no way of changing that.
UW/x and BG/x decks don't have these kind of problems and I don't think that will ever change because it's just the color pie being at work.
So here's my problem with Modern right now, I can't for the life of me figure out what I want to play. Nothing in the top decks interests me and no cards I've seen that I want to even try to play have a chance in Modern. Right now I'm trying to play the Abzan Fall of the Thran deck from against the odds but that deck is just bad against basically everything I've run into in the field. Can't beat Humans, can't beat Control, can't beat anything that starts killing early creatures. I've tried some GW decks but I just don't want to default to GW Company and try to combo out but nothing outside of doing just that in GW works. Tried GW Death Taxes but again the current meta is just toxic to that deck. I would probably want to consider an Abzan deck but those just don't do well either and I also don't want to invest so much money into goyfs just to not enjoy the deck either. Basically, I don't wanna play the meta but I also don't wanna lose constantly like I'm currently doing and it's to the point now where I just don't wanna play modern events at all because it seems like I'm in a point where I don't have a choice with decks.
Maybe you can check Mardu Pyro. The deck has a strong midrange/control match up, but falls against tron or dredge. But the flexibility of mardu colors has a lot of chances to improve that mu's.
Recently got a playset of Chord of calling and want to play a toolbox deck.
I tend to lean towards midrange decks, and most of the Chord decks I have been seeing are endless combo Kiki chord decks, something that doesn't appeal to me.
Anyone got any ideas on a fun toolbox deck?
You could try GW Elves with Chord of Calling or else there are also 2 flavors of GW or Abzan Company. They are fairly similar in style to Kiki Chord in my opinion, so I'm not sure if that will cure your fix.

I've been informed that I will be sans wife/kids this coming Sunday, so I'm heading to the local shop for their monthly modern tournament. A few fun facts about me:
- I've been playing on and off for many years, but I haven't played at all this summer due to a new baby. Fortunately, Hearthstone and MTG Arena have helped me keep a few basic skills up to date.
- When I last played regularly, I did a lot of Mardu Pyromancer. Five minutes of research suggest that TitanShift might also be a reasonable idea. Not sure if I'm capable of playing Dredge cold, but I did play it in Legacy way back when. I tried Humans when it first became a thing, and I wasn't a big fan, but I'm willing to try it again.
Cards you already own: almost all of them, and I know enough other vets to be able to pick up what I need to fill in the blanks.
Colors you like to play: indifferent. It's more about being able to pick something up fairly quickly as I haven't had much time to figure out nuances (which of course are the backbone of this format).
Style you like to play (control, combo, aggro, midrange, tempo, ramp, rogue): Never been a fan of tempo or the card Delver of Secrets. Also not a fan of the Storm mechanic, or the KCI combo. Played a number of commander pods with other MTG dads.
Level you want to play at, or aim to build up to (causal, fmn, ptq): Just looking for something to pilot with reasonable success at the shop this weekend. Anything beyond that is gravy.

It looks like you have a solid idea about what's good right now in Modern. Out of your choices of Humans, Mardu Pyromancer, and Titanshift, this is what I'd say.
1. Humans - the best overall choice. It's still one of the top 3 decks, if not the best!
2. Titanshift - a solid metagame choice, although the resurgence of KCI and Storm do bode poorly for it.
3. Mardu Pyromancer - I'm not the hugest fan of the deck. I feel there are certain decks that it barely beats like UW Control, but also some decks that it really struggles with. I'm assuming it's great vs. Spirits because I haven't tested that one and of the matchups I have tested, it has more negative matchups than positive.
4. UW Control - you could also try this because you love Control, but having been out of the recent metagame recently, it can be tough to feel everything out.

I ended up playing Mardu over Humans yesterday for the familiarity. I've played Mardu in the past with some success, and when I test Humans a few months ago, I went something like 0-12 in matches, hating every minute of it.
Well...Mardu ended up being a horrible choice. I faced mono-green Tron (L), Burn (L), and 4-color DS (W) before dropping to play a side event. Then I played RW Prison (T), a non-Modern deck (W), a very strong KCI deck (L), and the same 4-color DS (L).
Going forward, I'm looking at some other fair deck. Not sure if it will be Jund, Golgari, UW, or Jeskai, but something like that.
That's too bad it happened that way. Modern has a lot of variance, so even the best deck on a good day can go less than 50% while a "trash" deck can win a tournament. Now I don't think Mardu Pyromancer is a very strong deck, but you get the point.
I am going to the SCG Open in Las Vegas for Trios Constructed. Any suggestions for our Modern player? He is a Tron player, but can play anything pretty efficiently. I am playing Sneak Show in Legacy while our other player is doing UR Phoenix in Standard. I am going to bring my Humans deck in case, but it's probably best for him to run Tron since he's seen a lot of success with it. What do you think?

What reason do you have for him to not play Tron? It's still a good deck and putting up some results. Modern is a format where familiarity is rewarded. I don't doubt your friend can play other decks, it's quite common for entrenched players to play several decks fairly well, or be able to pick up similar decks easily. That being said, there just doesn't appear to be a significant benefit to swapping decks. Assuming your friend isn't breaking the meta, he's only gaining a couple percentage picking the optimal deck and then losing it to familiarity anyway. Especially if he's doing well with Tron, I say just let him play it.
I recently finished building Dredge and am having a blast with the deck so far, but I'm really needing an option that is less graveyard based for when my local meta inevitably overcorrects and starts running absurd amounts of graveyard hate.
Ideally if like to try something new, and while I'm open to buying the cards I need I'd like to limit my budget to around $600. Previously I've played Storm, Death and Taxes, UW Control, Titanshift, Affinity, Merfolk, Esper Draw Go, and Mardu Pyromancer.
Currently the options I'm looking at are Merfolk, Ad Nauseam, Titanshift, Infect, or some sort of absurd tier 3 jank that I can relax with on my weeks off Dredge. Probably something like 7 Land Belcher. Absurd, yes? Glass cannon? Also yes. Bad deck? Absolutely. Still fun though.
Mostly just looking for opinions or suggestions. I'd like to stay in the realm of combo decks if possible, Merfolk is the exception as I really enjoyed that deck the last time I played it.
I want to get some advice which deck might be a good choice for midrange.
I got Bg elves right now (including caverns).
But I wanted to invest for a midrange deck to have 2 avaible modern decks.
RG ponza and mardu pyromancer I'm interested the most with. (moderns deadguy ale also, since I played it.. but sold it 2 years ago or so)
what are your thoughts on these decks?
rg ponza i would love to play BBE, but some say its sometimes very dissapointing because of bad variance
pyromancer I dont know if the powerlvl is that fine
deadguy hasnt got a good finisher
own: 1 LtlH, 3 assassins trophy, singletons fetches because edh, souls, IoKs, fatal pushes, the shocklands
nothing so much that it leads drastictly into any direction
rly difficult for me. Aiming for bg rock is a long way for the whole package of LotV, goyf and confidant
any advice would be great guys
If you really enjoy midrange, play mardu pyromancer! i believe you are on the "i would play jund but lilis/tarmo are too expensive" train, so mardu pyromancer is an excellent choice, RG ponza is a great deck, but "can play BBE" is not a good argument for playing it (its more a blood moon deck that deny basic with land destruction)

I'll second the advice to play Mardu Pyromancer. The deck is VERY fun and if I wasn't all in on combo at the moment I'd probably be playing it myself. It just does so many fantastic things.

Ad Nauseum is the best creatureless combo deck in modern (and i would say it was the best combo deck until storm got new toys, like baral)
for tier 3 combo (to me land belcher is no tier since i dont think have put any real result in tournament) i like Jeskai Ascendancy combo because i love palying Glittering Wish in combo. Other than that, there are several tier 3 decks that are build around a card ( Soulflayer, Kiln Fiend infect like, Saheeli/cat like twin...etc).
pd: i forgot seismic swans! pretty funny deck IMHO
Thanks, @LeviatanCL. Ad Nauseam is currently my frontrunner as I already have a small chunk of the deck. I'm still considering building some tier 3 combo deck for fun though. Seismic Swans is sick and actually won a reasonably large tournament locally to me recently!

Premodern - Trix, RecSur, Enchantress, Reanimator, Elves https://www.facebook.com/groups/PremodernUSA/
Modern - Neobrand, Hogaak Vine, Elves
Standard - Mono Red (6-2 and 5-3 in 2 McQ)
Draft - (I wish I had more time for limited...)
Commander -
Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)I picked up Goys and wanna play them in a deck with blue
Spirits
I'll look that up then
