I have been playing control decks for a couple years. Started with mono-U tron, then moved to RUG scapeshift. Since last year, I have been trying Esper variants (mentor/gifts/obzadat). I love the control element, but am a bit tired of being reactive in current meta.
I'm looking for something more linear/combo/fast, and a deck that I can also grow with.
KCI seems really fun, but I can't afford the MOXsss....any recommendation? Thanks a lot!
Cards you already own:
most of the control elements (U counter spells, BW kill spells, B discards, W sideboard cards, Tron lands)
Fetch lands (UW/UB/UG/GB)
Shock lands and some fast lands
Colors you like to play
I LOVE blue, but probably have to shift to other colors if I want a new linear style -- which I'm totally open
Style you like to play (control, combo, aggro, midrange, tempo, ramp, rogue)
currently seeking for COMBO/rouge
Level you want to play at, or aim to build up to (causal, fmn, ptq)
FNM, maybe ptq
If you want Blue combo, Storm is about the blueiest comboiest deck you can get right now. And if you're willing to run Strand and Delta over Tarn, it shouldn't be hard for you to put it together. (I did that for a while and while it will technically cost you points here and there, you almost never need to fetch basic Mountain.)
If you want a little less linearity and a lot of growth potential, Grixis Death's Shadow is a good bet. The meta's kind of hostile to it now (as they say, if Stubborn Denial is bad, GDS is bad), but it's still a fine Tier 2 deck. Sounds like you probably have the money cards too, assuming you're again OK without Tarns and you have the Snaps already.

Hey guys so I've been on the magic scene for a long time but never really dropped any serious money into it, always been playing some cheap gimicky decks at FNMs and tabletop magic with friends, but I want to put some skin in the game and really build a deck that does well.
I currently play this janky aether vial siege rhino deck flicker deck that is SUPER inconsistent but loads of fun to play when it works out. Plays a lot like a tempo deck with all of the ETB effects the creatures have.
Cards you already own
The only "money" cards I have are a set of Aether Vials, and a set of Vendilion Cliques. I have a set of windswept heaths, 2 misty rainforests and a bunch of shocklands.
Colors you like to play
Really all of the colors. For me, its more so the play style of the deck rather than the colors.
Style you like to play
I love the idea of high value, annoying, resilient and efficient creatures that when dropped immediately have an effect on the game and annoy the opponent. The reason I love my weird vial siege rhino deck is all of the ETB effects. Immediately when dropped, the creatures do something meaningful, and interact with the opponent.
Speaking of interaction, I only have fun with decks that like to interact. Playing storm (solitaire) just sounds so boring to me, so I'd like to play something with a lot of interaction
I like synergy between cards. I like the little combos decks can do to gain small advantages. Surprising/unexpected wincons are always fun. I don't like relying on one card combo to have to win the game.
Level you want to play at, or aim to build up to
Would love to actually be competitive at FNMs and maybe some larger tournaments.
Hatebears and Merfolk seem to kinda fit the bill on what I am looking for, but what else do you guys think?
Look up GW Value Town, pretty sure its one of Todd Steven's decks.
This is a good option. Other options include Mono White Death and Taxes, Eldrazi Taxes, Humans, or some sort of Company deck.
I should also put this out there. You don't want to be doing something "too fair" in Modern right now. Humans can get away with it because they can kill on turn 4 (technically turn 3, but very rare). Jund is a deck that used to be super strong, but is just too fair in my opinion right now to compete on a Tier 1 level.

Hey guys, bit of a new player here, I've been playing since January or so and really went headfirst into it. I've been playing at local events about 3 times a week and have built 3 decks since then, and love every second of it.
But I've leveled off a bit lately for a few reasons, the main ones being that the decks I'm running are a bit on the slow/weak/inconsistent side, and the second one being that I have no healthy way to learn/improve, other than hoping I catch mistakes and learn from them during tournaments. I don't really have much of a playgroup, nor do I know many people who want to mentor me.
The decks I've built are Mono Green Stompy (which I just added Steel Leaf to), Mono Green Control/Land Destruction (3rd at an SCG in Feb) and Green Nykthos Devotion.
If you can't tell, I like green. But I'm not sure I think mono green is really a legitimate deck-building strategy anymore. I'd love to be proved wrong on this, but the lack of decent removal seems to be the biggest hangup.
I've looked at other decks and am a bit lost on where to start, but I know that my next deck purchase needs to be at least a Tier 2 deck, something I can feel confident in running, and know that when I lose, its because of my own lines of play, or because of a weakness in the matchup that I can work to shore up.
I know that I like good creatures, and thats something that someone else noticed about the decks I play too. The Mono Green Control deck was really fun to play as well, winning the game with no permanents on my opponents side was really gratifying, in a sadistic way.
I also know that I do NOT like control, or rather, that I don't like being controlled. I lean towards creatures that, if not just a solid creature for the curve, have an immediate effect when they enter, or are very difficult to remove/cant be countered. Card like Chameleon Colossus, Thrun, Carnage Tyrant, Dungrove Elder, Thragtusk, Primeval Titan, Hornet Queen, Craterhoof Behemoth, Tireless Tracker, etc are examples of how I like to play.
However, I also found a Bant Spirits deck that I really like, so green is by no means my only constraint. I had some fun splashing red in my Devotion deck last week as well, for Blood Moons and Kessig Wolf Run, as well as Bonfire of the Damned.
Some other decks I've looked at are Colorless Eldrazi Stompy, GR Eldrazi, Amulet Titan, GR Ponza.
What are some “under the radar” decks that can win a FNM? Something that may not be super popular so when I play it, people are caught off guard. I was looking into Skred Red since I don’t see it too much. Can that deck win a FNM? What other options are there?

Bogles. But it does have Horizon Canopy and Leyline of Sanctity. But that said, those should be your upgrade paths. If not, you can try Aristocrats or Elves.

all tier 3 deck can win a GP in modern given a favourable meta ( https://magic.wizards.com/en/events/coverage/gpdfw16), in fact i think that in some competitives FNM is harder to win with a tier 3 deck (because some are easy to hate out out of SB)
you could check https://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/modern/full#paper for ideas within your budget, Ad nauseam is a great combo deck that dont rely on creatures that could perfectly win next GP (and i could say the same for at least 5 more decks).
Are you looking for combo/aggro/control? that information is useful to narrow down what dck could you like.

I’m currently an elf player and am looking for a companion deck. Something different. I’ve tried a ton of decks and disliked them all. I like to be different from everyone else. That’s why I was lookin at Skred. It looks simple and has put up some results.
Things I don’t want to run are: Bogles, Burn, other CoCo decks, blue control.
are you somewhat new to modern (6 months or something like that)? there are several modern deck that while dont have high finish lately (i believe) are great decks (ot at least could easily take a FNM if no one expect):
Thinking of reviving some of the old combo decks I haven't played in a while. Help me rate the following combo decks on the following criteria:
Decks
Grishoalbrand
UR Storm
Amulet Bloom
Infect
KCI
Criteria
Resiliency (how does this deck recover from and survive disruption?)
Speed (how consistently does this deck win on various turns in real, non-goldfish games?)
Complexity (how hard is this deck to play passably/well/optimally?)
Positioning (how does this deck matchup against top-tier Modern strategies?)
Let me know what you all think! Also, feel free to add other decks if you have a combo deck pitch.
Surprisingly resilient since you can play out of your hand as well. Also good at dodging counters thanks to Splice.
Speed seems fine, depending on the build you can win before turn 4. I think you're generally trying to win around turn 4 and hoping to do better.
Deck's real easy for a combo deck. You just get your dude into play and then the rest is pretty much always the same.
Positioning seems mediocre. I think grave hate is around as much as ever, and Thoughtseize is much harder to deal with than Mana Leak is.
UR Storm:
Storm isn't super resilient, it can fold to a lot of things really easily. I've seen sideboard Pyromancer's Ascension that can help fight Thoughtseize / Grafdigger's Cage, but Leyline of the Void or RIP are pretty hard to answer.
Usually a turn 4 deck, sometimes turn 3 if your turn 2 lord lives. Sometimes the games do go longer but that typically favours you since you can sculpt your hand with all the cantrips and reuse your graveyard.
It's pretty difficult to play well, but I don't think it takes as many reps as people think. You just need to be really good at doing quick math on how your mana works. It's just always a matter of calculating how much mana you can produce and how much you actually need. The math tends to be pretty easy against non-blue decks.
Storm seems meh. It's bad against Jund and that's the new hotness still.
Amulet:
Quite resilient actually, since your threats find more threats or answers to removal. Playing Titan and being able to grab another Pact is good, and because you get ahead on lands/cards you still maintain enough value when it dies.
Speed varies but it's usually not that fast. I don't have as much experience with recent builds since I played it before the Bloom ban a ton. It's on the slower side of this list for sure though, especially since you don't win immediately most of the time.
Complexity is high but it's mostly about learning a few set lines and being able to derive things. For example, you learn how to double up on Amulet triggers and dome them for 20 with a Titan, or to fetch Simic Growth Chamber + Tolaria West and Transmute it. Once you learn the few lines you need, you can reason through a lot of things without too much difficulty. I find it's the kind of deck you play awful at the beginning, can learn to play quite well pretty fast, but the last few points are hard to get.
Well positioned depending on how Damping Sphere turns out. That card will suck for Amulet players for sure.
KCI:
Resiliency I'm not too sure about. The deck needs a lot of stuff in order to go off, but it also has a hard time with graveyard interaction due to its reliance on Scrap Trawler.
Speed seems reasonably fast depending on the amount of interaction. A lot of decks aren't equipped to interact with it so you get to just do whatever you want a lot of the time.
Probably the hardest deck on the list to play. The cycles are non-obvious as are the rule interactions. You have to keep doing a lot of math to make sure you're going off properly. In most cases that's irrelevant, but sometimes you have to know if you can wait or not, and that's difficult to tell.
Positioning seems really good. There just isn't enough hate for this type of deck.

Just my 2 cents and it's late right now, so I'll try to give out more 0.5s tomorrow on an EDIT.

I am not sure if their is a deck like this but I might as well give it a whirl.
So I play very creature heavy aggro. However, instead of spiking for an early finish, I like to be able to have back up sustain to keep the aggression going.
So to give a better idea of what I want:
An aggro deck where the name of the game is escalation. The more interactions to get rid of my creatures and removals played. The scarier the mid to late game boards potentially become.
Very creature focused, borderline zoo territory.
Non creatures can shove it unless they draw, or help with making or breaking boards.
I am not as concerned about budget. If it's expensive. I can look at finding cards of similar principles if need be. I just want to see if a deck like this exists. (If not well back to figuring something out.)
