Nice. Thanks for the advice. Think I'm gonna roll with BW Eldrazi Processor and see how that goes.
I don't think Processors is much good anymore. I used to play it. It was amazing when the meta was all Grixis Control and Jund/Junk, but that has changed. Here's a list for reference of BW Eldrazi Taxes.
Legacy - Sneak Show, BR Reanimator, Miracles, UW Stoneblade
Premodern - Trix, RecSur, Enchantress, Reanimator, Elves https://www.facebook.com/groups/PremodernUSA/ Modern - Neobrand, Hogaak Vine, Elves

Hey, I've been playing death shadow varients for a while, as well as burn, and I'm looking for something new. I'm still very much in love with death shadow and will probably main it for the foreseeable future, but I really dislike playing burn and I want to trade it off or sell it for a different deck. I was hoping you guys would have some recommendations
I own burn, 5 color death shadow and grixis death shadow.
I usually enjoy midrange. I dislike hard control as I like to have some questions in my deck. Tempo decks are also very fun.
Decks I've enjoyed: affinity, grixis death shadow, 5 color death shadow and (standard: GB energy, GB delirium, Sultai energy and temur energy).
Decks I've not enjoyed: burn, GX Tron, and UW control.
I dislike playing burn because I feel very frustrated playing the deck and like I'm not given many choices.
I'll be playing up to a GP level, although I'll probably just run death shadow, but maybe not. Either way I'd prefer if the deck was competitive.
Just looking for some suggestions, maybe there's a deck a haven't considered much
You've enjoyed Affinity so why not grab that? It seems like it's up your alley since it gives you a lot of options.
Typical BGx decks like Jund or Abzan look like they would appeal to you as well. They probably won't feel enough different from 5c Death Shadow though.
Mainly because I have so little cards for it. It feels bad to build affinity for $650 when I could build dredge for $150 or abzan for $250. But affinity is definitely a deck I've been thinking about building as I used to own it but traded it/gave it to a friend.
I've been thinking about abzan, that's a good point tho that it won't be much different that 5 color shadow.
I am a bit lost in modern right now. Been playing last pptq season: Abzan and Counters Company. After deciding I needed to play more modo(mtgo) I sold my Abzan to play paper and modo the same time.
I started my journey with UR Gifts Storm. Deck is good, but there is so much hate and I feel I am not the player for the deck.
Last year I played numerous decks, and I realy want to focus myself on 1 deck. Grinding it for the comming months(year).
I own like €575 in paper cards and 250 tix on mtgo. I can sell modo and start a manatraders account. I have the financial funds to do so.
But now the choice of deck:
Burn
Infect
Affinity
E-Tron
Those are on the top of the list. I need a deck that I can master, and I can keep focus on. It needs some depth and some skill to play.
Affinity seems like the best deck out of that bunch. It has the most depth and skill required to play it, and it's a deck that's been tier 1 for as long as I can remember. It gets hated to some degree, but never enough that it's actually a problem. It's also easy enough to play okay on the surface, so you'll see some amount of success with it while you spend time mastering it.

I was going to say the same thing. I think the deck is not for the weak of heart, as there will be days when everyone gets Stony Silence in games 2 and 3. But if you master this "VERY HARD to play super well" deck, there will be a lot of rewards. I believe that it's the best of what you listed and it's good vs. Big Tron and Titanshift, which are the current flavors of the week. Burn and Infect are also good vs. those, but I think Infect is not quite on Affinity's level and Burn seems to always come down to "is it a Bolt?" or "am I dead?" I am biased here, so if someone else suggests Burn, that may actually be a solid suggestion.

I think Burn is a bad suggestion for him because it's too linear and simple. Burn is as easy as a deck gets (sorry Burn folks, your deck isn't hard). There will always be certain nuances to any deck, but a deck playing cheap creatures and pointing burn spells to the face is as simple as it gets. He wanted a deck he could practice and master, but you're going to gain very little out of repeated reps with the deck. Affinity is most definitely a deck that will reward you for playing a lot, but is also a deck that's easy enough to pick up and do okay with, since you sometimes just free roll games from insane hands.

True, affinity is the ‘best’ tier 1 deck I guess. But it goes down to specific hate tho. Burn aswell.
But you guys do not mention E-Tron, this deck no good anymore?
Infect is on it’s way back indeed, but I have got the same feeling about it. Do not know if it is good enough.
I personally never thought that E Tron was that good. I think the deck is very inconsistent in my opinion.

Does it hold it’s ground in the current meta? It is always around but it almost never wins, that’s The feeling I get with affinity ^^
Affinity is always good enough to win, and I wouldn't say "it never wins" as a reason to not play it. It's still a good deck and it's still a good choice.
Significantly worse after the Probe ban. It relied on Probe to make sure the way was clear and cheaply fuel Become Immense. Without it, the deck operates too much in the dark during an all-in plan. People mostly don't play Infect anymore.

Thanks for the reply. Right now only Humans, Affinity and E-Tron remain in my vieuw to choose. Going to play all in proxy paper next weeks and on MTGO with some friends. Any tips there?
So, I've recently come back to MTG after a couple years in the salt mines of League, and I'm looking to start up a modern deck in paper and want a bit of guidance if possible. I have some bits and pieces in my collection from last time round, and have sold up a whole bunch of edh staples on Pucatrade, so I have about £600 in points, assuming all the trades go through ok.
I'm not sure what I want to put the points into however- I've got experience playing most older decks in the format, I left just after Twin was banned last time. If possible, I'd really like to use the initial investment to get a core deck, and be able to expand from that point.
I've kind of identified 3 or 4 shells I could start with, which are Blue control, by getting cryptics and snapcasters, green creature based with Nobles and CoCo, the Through the breach jam with like prime time and TTB, or the Tron package with Karn and such like.
The plan is to go to local/regional tournaments, and i'll not have insane opportunities to playtest and tune, so I'd like something that is both fairly tuned/meta so i can use the wealth of info on this site, and also something that I can be confident playing into a blind meta where I can rely on my play ability and knowledge. (as limited as this is at the moment)
Am I being unreasonable? Any suggestions would be delightful.
Play them each, then watch a video or two about the deck to get a better understanding, then play them again. Don't make your decision too hastily if you're going to spend a few hundred dollars.
I also wouldn't recommend Humans, primarily because it's a flavor of the month deck. Affinity and Tron are decks that have been around for a long time and good for a long time. Tron has gone through several changes, but the core of what it is now (Tron and Eldrazi) have both separately been good for the entirety of their existence in Modern. Most of the expensive stuff in Humans is usable elsewhere (Hierarch, Vial, Cavern, Horizon Canopy), but you won't make a functional deck with those pieces. I think building a deck that's more reliable long-term is a better investment strategy.
Snapcasters are definitely the best core there because of how flexible they are. It's also probably the most expensive core because you need Snaps and a bunch of shocks/fetches. It's also likely the most difficult deck you could build out of the bunch, but then it's also one you probably have the most experience with. I think this probably isn't for you though, mostly because of the need to understand the format.
I think that all of the decks are fairly tuned, CoCo being the least tuned because it's relatively new and has a bunch of 1-ofs (I see the lists changing a little here and there). I think this makes it probably a bad idea, because it's likely to change the most of any of the decks, and you need something more stable.
Probably Titan Breach or Tron is the best for you. They're straight forward decks and don't really change much. If you have little time to play, it'll be relatively easy to pick them up and learn what little you need to. Being proactive is much better when you're in a position of less knowledge, because control decks require you to understand the format to know which cards are threats, what you need to play around, etc. Either of these two seem fine, I'd try proxying them and seeing which suited you best.
Thanks for tsking the time to give a thought out reply!
I agree with a lot of your points and think the conclusion you reached is pretty reasonable. My main concern would be long term reliability and interest, which is something I've struggled with previously. I'm a bit of a deck butterfly, so I'm worried about getting a deck that has one style of play and losing interest in it.
Thats why I listed jeskai variants and coco variants, because they can transition between control/tempo and creature control/combo respectively. If i go for titans its get a fast titan or bust, and tron i choose between different splashes i suppose.
Hey all, I'm looking for a deck that meets a few specific criteria and I'm not sure if one exists. So I'll lay out what I'm looking for and hopefully somebody can get me towards something close.
1. Is good against burn and big G/x tron. Not a 90/10 match up, but something you're comfortable playing with if you saw those decks each round somehow.
2. Doesn't roll over and die to targeted hate such as dredge/affinity.
3. Has a plan against linear combo decks (i.e. storm, scapeshift) that involves more than "hope to race."
4. Won't fold to thoughtseize midrange decks.
5. Is not burn or tron itself.
I first thought about Ad Naus, but losing to any deck with discard and pressure is a non-starter for me. Affinity is a great deck, but I personally want to avoid the "some weeks you don't get to play" baggage that comes with it. Grixis shadow is close, but after playing it a decent amount I never want to see burn or an urza land across the table. I'm well aware this may be an impossibility, and likely is, but can you think of any other decks that can come close?

I feel like you're asking for a tier 0 deck there, stokpile.
I feel like I mentioned it's not possible twice, spawn. Trying to see what decks can tag what points since I am not intimately familiar with the ins and outs of every deck in modern. Is lantern actually good/fine against burn? I have no idea. Is ad naus really as awful against DS/Jund decks as I think? I don't know. Does storm get a bye against affinity? It seems so, but I can easily be wrong. See my point?

Sounds like Affinity is the deck that meets most of your criteria, stokpile. Have you actually played with Affinity? You make it sound like the deck sometimes has non-starters, but against legitimately any hate piece you're likely to face there is an out. Ghirapur Aether Grid is the clear answer to Stony Silence, keeping fast hands is the answer to removal, and the deck even has access to pretty much any sideboard tech because of all the any color sources. You get Blood Moon against big mana, and Thoughtseize against combo decks. Plus, even against your "bad matchups" there's always the chance you just get a godhand and win before they can amount any sort of fight.
In short, it sounds like your experience with Affinity is the echo chamber that this forum is, and in practice you'll find Affinity is much more resilient than its players like to claim.
As to your other questions, I can personally attest that midrange Thoughtseize.dec is the bane of Ad Nauseam's existence; until we miraculously get away from the metagame with Thoughtseize being such a huge factor, I wouldn't pick the deck up again (unforunately, because I really enjoy the deck). Lantern is arguably the best deck in modern right now, but definitely is not a 75-25 across the board. It has its bad matchups, and takes an inordinate amount of skill to pilot well. GDS isn't stupendous against Tron, but the Burn matchup is better than people who don't play the deck would assume. It just takes a different approach to your avenues to victory, and if you land a Death's Shadow then your opponent usually has made it huge.
Still sounds like Affinity is your best option, just tune your sideboard to the hate you find yourself up against often, and learn to read what types of hands excel in which ways with the deck, and when you need them vs various matchups. It's all about exposure and learning.

My first inclination was Affinity, but then I saw the #2. You may hate me for saying this, but GR Ponza SMASHES Tron and you can build it to also beat Burn. There's so many creatures that you could put in, like Kitchen Finks, Huntmaster of the Fells, Obstinate Baloth, and Thragtusk. Basically, you could build it to beat Burn.
Another option is to find a list that beats Burn and try to over sideboard for Tron (main board play set of Ghost Quarter too). I personally think that Esper Goryo's is around 50/50 vs. both Burn and Tron. You can always put Rain of Tears, which is good with Jace, Vryn's Prodigy I hear (SB).
