I'll proxy it up for sure : will take a peek at the primer also to see how it works out! I haven't thought of it honestly, but I might enjoy it!
I've realized that I'm not good with interactions other than countering stuff (I'm awful at combat and blocking), and I'm good at sequencing cantrips and lands (temples with scry for example). So I guess Goryo's Vengeance would be the style of deck that I'm able to win with. However, I'm guessing that bother Ad Nauseam and Goryo's Vengeance are really similar to the same hate : discard, fast clock + counters, etc. They win and lose in the same meta right?

Yeah, your two decks there are very similar so you're not going to get different coverage in metas or things like that. Feel free to ask UW Tron questions because I'm the one that wrote the primer. It seems like the deck might be good because there's pretty much no combat. My current list plays 5 creatures and three of them don't really involve combat in any meaningful way. I would say sometimes winning with one of the creatures (Iona or Elesh Norn) doesn't happen immediately but you'll see that looking through the primer and how that all comes together.
Sequencing cantrips and stuff like that is important for this deck. Gifts Ungiven is basically a giant mess of a card trying to figure out what options are the best, and it sounds like that's something you'll be good at.
Hi guys! I'm new to this website, but have been a constant lurker the last month or two. I came to this thread because I'm unsure of which deck to play (obviously haha). I've been playing Magic for a little over two years now, and my favorite format is Modern. I love all decks that aren't dedicated control, and have played decks like Bant Eldrazi, Dredge (pre-bannings), and Infect (pre-bannings). I got out of Modern after the bannings because I wasn't sure of which deck I wanted to play, and I don't don't have all of Infect or Dredge anymore. My friends say I'm a red mage, but am unsure of whether or not I'd get bored with Burn. I saw a Rakdos burn deck with Vexing Devil and Claim//Fame, which got me interested, but have also thought about playing Skred, as it is different for a red deck. I also LOVE Eldrazi, but do not want to play Eldrazi Tron and have thought about picking up BE again. I have also been considering Jund.... Can anyone give me any suggestions? Thanks!
After some time off of MTG I'm about to buy into Modern and I'm looking for suggestions on which deck to play.
I like decks with fewer creatures and tons of spells, basically Control and some Midrange decks.
The ones I'm currently considering are UW Control, U-Tron and maybe UR Storm.
My concerns regarding each one: From my testing with UW Control I've been struggling on closing the game, sometimes I stabilize but the amount of space I give my opponent is often times enough for him to come back. (I guess I'm playing it wrong, since there's so many clutch decisions each turn)
UR Storm: I enjoy the way the combo wins out the game, but it seems a bit uninteractive and thus not as much fun to play.
U-Tron: I like the concept and the way it plays, but the deck is a bit off meta (Which doesn't indicate much since I only plan to play at LGS level).
Any help choosing one of these or suggestions of other decks I haven't thought about is appreciated.

Would blitzkreig interest you?
It can play the control game with planeswalkers and cheap removal and close out the game with haymakers.

Hey guys, looking into starting Colourless Eldrazi Tron and was wondering if any people piloting this deck could tell me how it feels. Does the deck feel stale e.g. repetitive? Does the deck still feel fun and challenging even after playing it for over a year? Is it a type of deck that can bounce back and win out of nowhere? Appreciate any information you guys are willing to share.
It can get somewhat boring. It's basically creature oriented with defense in the form of Chalice of the Void usually. I personally feel that there are hands where you just go over the top of what your opponent is doing (turn 3 Tron into large creatures or double Eldrazi Temple into big dudes), but sometimes you also are just way too slow and anemic.
I guess this can happen with any deck, but it is not one (I do have it built) that interests me much.

One option is to rebuild Dredge. It's still very strong. However, I want to emphasize that there is a LOT of grave hate going around right now, so matches are going to play out as so. For example, I even run 2 Relic of Progenitus in the Titanshift MB with more in the SB.
You may enjoy Burn with Black - Bump in the Night. Play it as Rwb. Gives you interesting SB options too.

Still looking for input here, please.
Storm is noninteractive. You really have to somewhat embrace that. I personally find it tough to play in the GDS meta, that deck being a poor matchup. However, it does have other good matchups and is probably the most consistent Combo deck, given no interaction against it.
UW Control does have problems finishing the game. I personally would like to try with Gideon of the Trials. You have to really enjoy that you are just pretty much trying to stop what your opponent is doing or disrupt them enough to close it out with Planeswalkers. You could run a Elspeth, Sun's Champion or Gideon Jura if you need to close it out quicker.
I personally don't think Mono Blue Tron is well placed at all. Jund was a good matchup for it previously, but GDS is not. I honestly wouldn't run it unless you enjoy it like MTGO's shoktroopa and are that good with it.

The list I'm looking at (and most lists currently) runs 2 Gideon of the Trials and 1 Jura, plus the 4 colonnades and the Elspeth on the sideboard. Playtesting with a friend who plays E-Tron, I've been struggling a bit to keep things controlled long enough to be able to beat him down, since etron has lots of heavy threats and Ulamog which even when countered, it removes 2 permanents from me. Overall I love the playstyle and I'm pretty sure I still have a lot to learn on how to pilot it, so I'll probably build UW Control.

I believe that E Tron is favored. When I played UW Control, E Tron was the deck that caused me the most problems, just as you said. I could stop them for a while, but eventually they have more threats than I have counters and I have no pressure.

I'm finally just getting into MTG. I first started playing heavily last year but stopped for some reason. My brother is like 13 but the best player I know lol. I don't know much but I know enough to play instead of just table games. I've played with Burn, Jeskai-Nahiri, a Goblin deck, and a bunch of store bought decks (im sure i've played way more since my brother builds new decks every two months) but I am working on this to build right now for semi-competitive play:
Sorcery (12)
2x Grapeshot
2x Past in Flames
4x Serum Visions
4x Sleight of Hand
Sideboard (15)
2x Blood Moon
2x Dismember
2x Dispel
1x Echoing Truth
2x Empty the Warrens
3x Lightning Bolt
2x Shattering Spree
1x Swan Song
This is a variation of U/R (Gifts) Storm and I added Young Pyromancer because I like to have more than just one way to win. This is changed for budget-wise eventually I'll replace some of those lands with Scalding Tarns or something but right now I am like half way complete of building this deck (moneywise).
But as somebody who's favorite deck is Burn & Aggro style do you think I should build this? And if not what other modern decks can I build that fit my style of play (Aggro) for around $500? (I don't want to build Burn because my friend, who I just got into Magic this week, is building a competitive Burn deck). My brother is in the process of building Grixis Control right now < this has no significance just thought I'd share and get opinions on that deck. Also I haven't played other than in my house so I'm not sure how the Meta is around me.

welcome. I posted this list for someone in the budget forum, and you can use this as a base. you can add planeswalkers, fetches, and update the manabase to fit your budget. It comes to ~$300 i think.

deck is good, and the budget option is marginal worst than the real deck (just cut the scalding tarn like you did), the problem i see is that you may not enjoy it, playing combo is really different than playing aggro like burn, but if you test storm and like it, go with it.
the other aggro deck by excellence in modern is affinity, but you really cant cut anything to make it cheaper.
My meta consists of : 2-3 UW control, 2 abzan company, 1 storm, 1 junk, 1 jund, 1 mardu control, 2 insta rea, 1 valakut, 2-3 burn, 1-2 merfolk, 1 human company, 1 affinity, 1 eldratron, 1-2 elves, 1-2 Gx tron, 1 living end, 1 dredge, 1 martyr life, 12-3 grixis DS.
What do you think is better Eldratron or Affinity ?
Thanks
I was really leaning toward Eldrazi Tron after reading the first line. But after closer inspection, here's what I got, assuming the lower number on your spectrum. Decks I want to play against if I'm E Tron - 13. Decks I want to play against if I'm Affinity - 15. It's super close and probably not a big deal either way, but Affinity is your deck.
Disclaimer: Affinity is much, much tougher to play than E Tron. People get caught up in the easy "I win" Affinity hands, but it's tougher to grind out or know when to go for it at other times.

this, plus affinity is THE modern deck IMHO and dont see modern without affinity, eldrazi tron may be a good deck at the moment, but you never know how the meta change
So I've narrowed down to two decks and I need help picking one: UR Storm and UW Control.
While I love the control playstyle, UW feels too passive sometimes and heavily match-up dependant. UR Storm, on the other hand can combo off pretty soon but gets hated on by so many cards and I'm not sure yet how to deal with that.
I plan on getting the deck for LGS play, where I'll play against stuff like: E-Tron, Elves, Affinity, Merfolk, GDS.
Hey guys, I'd love to hear your thoughts/suggestions on what you think I would have fun playing. I used to play BW/Mardu Tokens (except I don't have Lili) but then I took a break from Magic for a bit.
Cards I have:
Most non-green fetches/shocks (sans Tarns), Tokens-related cards, various sideboard cards, Esper cards sans Snap, Cryptic and Clique.
Color preference:
1. Black
2. White
3. Blue/Red
What was the other color again? (I actually like green when I play it but don't feel like buying Goyf/Hierarch/fetches/shocks)
I'll start off with decks/styles I don't want to play: Tron, Living End, Dredge, Storm, Bogles, Infect.
I enjoy oppressing my opponent and prefer 'fair' Magic so I would be happy playing either tempo or control, but I'm not too keen on aggro. I'd like to play a deck that has multiple win-cons and unique/interactive matches, FNM competitive at least.
I like rogue/non-traditional decks but am open to playing anything besides the aforementioned. Emeria is a deck I have recently considered playing.
A few cards I like:
Pack Rat
Necrotic Sliver
Sun Titan
Porphyry Nodes
Budget: ~$300-500 (for now, I wouldn't mind buying Snap/Lili though)

With that budget, what you like, and what you already have, you are probably in the best position to just improve your B/W Tokens deck. If you already have Marsh Flats, Thoughtseize and Bitterblossom, you already have most of the expensive stuff. A Liliana would be nice.
Other than that, you might like Esper Control. And of course there is Grixis/Esper Death's Shadow.
Hey everyone, I've been playing magic 3 years and modern about 1 year. Got into modern with naya burn for a few reasons, I was able to get half the deck cheap from a couple friends getting out of magic, especially eidolons for free, it's already a budget friendly deck for someone who was in school at the time, and it fits my playstyle.
It's been a good time, But with the emergence of RG vengeful one I've picked up the pieces for that deck too. Played it for the first time yesterday.
My question is, a modern pptq this weekend, should I play burn, which I know and love, But is a known T1 deck and people will be prepared for it, or should I play the vengevine deck that is less of a known quantity but may be able to spike a tournament better due to lack of knowledge and preparedness in the meta? Thanks in advance.

I think you already know the answer to this. It's just a matter of risk and reward. Neither choice is a bad one, per se.
Should you play Burn? You know how to play it. You play it very well and are experienced. And Modern players rarely do much to prepare for Burn. Take it from someone who is exactly like this. It's easier to say that you can dodge it or put 1-2 extra cards in your SB for it (which Skullcrack nullifies anyway).
Should you play RG Vengevine? It's an explosive deck. There's no denying that. It's also much less consistent and you may or may not know all of the lines yet. Watching Frank Lepore play it was a bumble fest and even Ari Lax didn't always make the optimal plays. Maybe you feel like you're better than Frank Lepore, which I can understand? When it comes down to it, this is the more risky choice. It also has possibly the biggest reward. You can get 1st or you can get last with this deck (obviously exaggerating a bit). With Burn, you know you'll be around an expected record, but with this one, you never know.
*It's a really tough choice, understandably. I've been playing the "safe" choice at 3 PPTQs with Titanshift. After not winning any of these, I personally may be ready for the risky choice in Grishoalbrand. But it's tough to pay the cost of the PPTQ, in more ways than 1, for the high risk choice. What do you want to do?

I laughed my ass off, partially because he played the deck awfully lol.
If I don't get the chance to play 2 pptqs this weekend my plan for Saturday is to get both decks on modo (yike$) and test them both to see which is better.
If I play 2, I'll try vengeful one the first time and see how it performs and how I like it. It's also worth seeing how much the decklist progresses
Hey there, I'm having a tough time finding my deck that I'll stick to. I started out with affinity, but got tired of it quickly because I grew tired of pretty much gold fishing. Next came bant eldrazi and eldrazi tron. Bant eldrazi wasn't as fun as I thought it would be and I hate tron. Next was knightfall. Which got boring do I added the Vizier combo which got boring too. I would love to have it be competitive but fun with multiple lines of play. Also not Aggro. I want to interact a lot. I am on a budget but not really. Just no goyfs and the like. I have bant lands but that's not mandatory. I'm not opposed to combo but don't want to goldfish
Please help, I love modern but don't know my deck.

Grixis Control is a lot of fun and has a lot of play to it. Plus it can be fairly easily turned into Grixis Deathshadow if you want.
Not entirely sure how well it will fit into your budget though, it depends on how many of the cards you already own.

Aggro: Naya Burn RWG
Combo: Scapeshift RG
Control: Jeskai Control UWR
Legacy
Control: Miracles UW
Aggro: Burn R
Sequencing cantrips and stuff like that is important for this deck. Gifts Ungiven is basically a giant mess of a card trying to figure out what options are the best, and it sounds like that's something you'll be good at.
Grixis Death's Shadow, Jund, UW Tron, Jeskai Control, Storm, Counters Company, Eldrazi Tron, Affinity, Living End, Infect, Merfolk, Dredge, Ad Nauseam, Amulet, Bogles, Eldrazi Tron, Mono U Tron, Lantern, Mardu Pyromancer
Still looking for input here, please.
Would blitzkreig interest you?
It can play the control game with planeswalkers and cheap removal and close out the game with haymakers.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)I believe that E Tron is favored. When I played UW Control, E Tron was the deck that caused me the most problems, just as you said. I could stop them for a while, but eventually they have more threats than I have counters and I have no pressure.

You could also look at:
Living end (combo with creatures, if you like more the red deck win beating with creatures than burn spell, you may like this more than storm)

skred red (somewhat red hate midrange deck)

I was really leaning toward Eldrazi Tron after reading the first line. But after closer inspection, here's what I got, assuming the lower number on your spectrum. Decks I want to play against if I'm E Tron - 13. Decks I want to play against if I'm Affinity - 15. It's super close and probably not a big deal either way, but Affinity is your deck.
Disclaimer: Affinity is much, much tougher to play than E Tron. People get caught up in the easy "I win" Affinity hands, but it's tougher to grind out or know when to go for it at other times.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)this, plus affinity is THE modern deck IMHO and dont see modern without affinity, eldrazi tron may be a good deck at the moment, but you never know how the meta change
Thanks!
Thanks in advance for input!

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)I laughed my ass off, partially because he played the deck awfully lol.
Please help, I love modern but don't know my deck.
Not entirely sure how well it will fit into your budget though, it depends on how many of the cards you already own.
