Hey all. I've been playing Magic for a few years now and I am thinking of making the jump into modern. I prefer a midrange/control type of playstyle and a preference for W/R/U in some combination, not a lot of love for B.
Currently looking into Suicide Bloo/Thing Ascension, and some kind of Enchantress deck, though not quite sure what qualiies as good or not. Any and all suggestions are appreciated, thanks!
Hey, everyone. I'm planning on going to my first big Magic tournament the weekend of Oct 22-23 (SCG Open Milwaukee), but I'm not sure what to play. I've played tons of decks, but have not really found one that I cling to and enjoy head-and-shoulders above the rest. Most recently I've tried out RG Breach, which was definitely fun to play, but I'd prefer to take something that's as tuned for an open meta as possible. I've had relative success with Jund and Abzan, and though I haven't played it in a while I've heard Nahiri Jeskai is on the rise again. I've also played Tron, Affinity, Abzan CoCo, Elves, RG Ponza, Slivers, and Merfolk. (I have Infect, but I don't think I have the reps needed to do well with it.)
What deck(s) would be good contenders in an open meta? I'd like to start solidifying my plans, as sideboarding is sort of my biggest weak point and I'd like to get some practice in before I decide to take the deck.
First time poster here. I am primarily a Standard player, and I enjoy playing Tier 0.5 decks in the respective format. I was told by my friends that Modern has a deck for everyone. I require a deck that requires very minimal effort and produces extremely high win rate. Budget is not a concern. I only have time to play PPTQs on the weekend and don't have much time to playtest.

I think Infect would be a good choice for either of you. It's the closest to a Tier 0.5 deck and even if you don't play it well, there are so many free wins. I didn't want to play it for similar reasons, but I think at this point in Modern, I'd rather join 'em than try to beat 'em.

Does Infect always win on turn 2? My friends tell me that the turn 4 rule is a lie in Modern and that I should be looking to win on the 1st or 2nd turn. Is there a deck that wins on turn 1 with a high rate in this format?

No, nothing wins on turn 1 or 2 with any consistency, but INfect is the closest. It has a certain percentage of wins on turns 2, 3, and 4. That's what you should be doing - winning on those turns or pretty damn close to it. I know I'll probably get flamed and banned for a week, but here's my guess.
Turn 2 - 7.5%
Turn 3 - 15%
Turn 4 - 30%
In real time, it's probably much higher than that since it's pretty tough for Infect to win the long game.

yo, been playing commander for a while, and i quite enjoy some midrange, and my favorite colors are red white. is there any type of deck that does this sort of thing easily?
do playsets and 20 life total make this a better place to play rw in general?
would it just be better to play burn?
i'm kinda getting bored of commander and don't have the budget to play singleton legacy (tiny leaders)

Are you looking to play budget / pauper / competitive?
i mean, i have splurged a lot of money on commander, so i guess i'll go ahead and say competitive, unless it costs significantly more than commander to play at high levels (i just heard a rumor that tiny leader was about as expensive as legacy, and dont want to pay that much money).

In that case, considering you enjoy WR splashing and mid-range decks, there's not a lot to choose from at the competitive level with those options wait nevermind... Naya Burn and Zoo are basically what you're looking for, if you're up for a bit of deck teching on the forums. Go here for the Zoo thread. Bant Eldrazi is probably the fairest mid-range deck in the format at the moment, but it doesn't splash red at all.
There's also some Zoo (more info here) variants which engage in mid-range interactions and splash a lot of white and red. Modern as a format right now doesn't offer a lot in term of mid-range engagements outside of Bant Eldrazi and Zoo. Is there anything else - specifically - you're looking for in a deck?
i dont want my brain to be fried trying to think of too many lines of play that could be avoided by playing a simpler deck. it's not that i'm dumb, just lazy and mathematically slow.
It's seen in comps and lays down the hurt with mid-range creatures - hence the name. It also controls flow with some Path to Exile and Ghost Quarter for good measure. There are some other ANNOYING things in it (I've played against it) like Rancor.
I recommend trying it out in a sim such as xMage against an AI or some randoms.
Currently trying to choose between my Kiki Chord list and my Abzan Evo list. I've found that playing Abzan Evo is more fun than kiki chord, but i do not want a deck that can't win any events. I will play Abzan Evo if it can win FNM with the occasional open or gp when they are close enough, but i am unsure if it can. If it can't, i will just stick with ol' reliable kiki chord. Any input?
If you want to win, keep Kiki around. If you're in it to have a fun, play what you want. Do you have to sell off the pieces to the other deck? If you don't you can just play whatever you want.
Playing Skred showed me that I love playing Blood Moon. Like, a lot. What kind of control/prison decks can I play with it? So far the biggest I've seen are Blue Moon and RG Ponza.

I used to play magic some 4 years ago and have never played ever since. Now I want to start again, but since I dont have much time to do the "trading card" part of the game I was looking for a fun, slightly competitive deck, that doesnt need much maintenance (i. e. a reasonably good deck that I can play once or twice a month with without having to give a lot of taught about banlists), and for that reason I am looking for a modern deck. Could you please recomend some decks that fall under this description?
What do you consider "fun"? Any favorite archetypes or colours or synergies?
Just shooting from the hip I'd say check out the following in the Competitive and Developing sections of the Modern forums:
- Burn
- Merfolk
- Affinity
- Titan Shift (sometimes called RG Valakut)
These are all decks that are competitive right now and are very unlikely to be hit, or hit hard, by a ban. Affinity is probably the most likely in that list to receive a ban but I'd still personally rate that likelihood as very low.

Do you have standard cards from 4 years ago? These cards were around in standard 4 years ago and are good in modern:
And of course if you have shocklands from RTR those all see play in modern. If you already have some of these cards, that might be a good place to start when building a deck.

Hello everyone. I am looking to play some Modern on MTGO after a very long hiatus, and would like some advice. I am very unfamiliar with the current metagame right now (though I did read some articles now and then) and totally missed the Eldrazi Winter thing. There are a couple of decks I am interested in, but am not sure which to go with. However, some context first.
The Constraint
I am a bit short of play time. Maybe 4-5 hours in total a week at max. I am thinking maybe that means I should play aggro/aggressive decks. Not saying that is easier, just that with the limited play time maybe I will do better with decks that ask the questions then decks that answer them. In addition, I may only have about 60 tix to strengthen my collection. I am woefully short of cards, made a bad judgment buying in Birthing Pods right before the ban. And I stopped buying the Noble Hierarch. Ugh. Now the little dork skyrocketed and left me with a bunch of Kitchen Finks and Murderous Redcaps. I have the lands too, the shocklands and fetchlands. But I still miss Horizon Canopys, which I heard is critical to the current iteration of CoCo deck. Hm... I digressed.
The Decks I am Interested in
Abzan Company - As I mentioned, I have some of the backbones for this deck, Melira, Finks, Redcap. But I am missing the Hierarchs and Horizon Canopy. How many tickets do you think it will cost to have a playset of those? Will the combo be very clunky on MTGO?
U/W Titan/Emeria Control - my favorite color, funny enough, is actually U/W. However I have a playset of shocks and fetches for an Abzan land base, but not a single one for U/W. If I am to switch to U/W, would it be possible to trade for those U/W fetches and shocks 1-for-1? Also would 60 tix be enough to come up with a decent enough list for me to practice with? (I don't even have Supreme Verdict /facepalm)
U/W Tron - yep. That's the deck when I first started playing Modern on MTGO. With Gift's Ungiven and Unburial Rite combo. After being steamrolled by numerous R/G tron I just trade away the deck and into the POD deck. Ouch. Is U/W tron good now? Or is it better to just go with U/W Titan/Emeria?
Miscellaneous
I hope I am not boring you guys and gals to death with my bantering. I am a control player at heart. Nothing feels better than to deny others of what they are trying to do, and resolving Wrath of God against weenies is certainly one of the better moments in my Magic life. I've actually considered Lantern Control, but was a bit scared of its price tag. Those Chrome Mox and Glimmervoid are really made of gold. Or platinum. Or titanium. Aside from the decks I've mentioned, any other suggestion including what to buy or how to trade for deck components are also very welcome. Thank you for reading this, and good day to you!

Figured id start with two things
1: abzan company is "unplayable" online, the infinite scry combo will quickly consume your entire clock, and your opponent can win through your combo simply by forcing you to play it out, which most people do on mtgo. However, canopies are not really a requirement, but are a huge boost, but the deck can be played without. Hierarchs alone will run you through your budget though
2: speaking from experience here, it may not be the case for you but for me im not happy playing anything except the archetypes i truly enjoy. Playing aggro is honestly the right choice on mtgo, especially with limited time, but i am much happier getting 5-6 matches in with the decks i love than i am getting 8-10 matches with decks i hate
So, i reccomend checking out budget magic on mtggoldfish, 60 tix is a pretty small budget but saffron is pretty good at finding semi competitive decks for that price range. Trading your abzan fetches/shocks for another color will help a bit, but will only go so far
Hey guys, I'm interested in the new open league system, whith shiny chests and want to give it a try.
The problem is i'm not that rich, and I can't spend too much money on a deck (300$ budget on average).
I'm looking for a good consistent deck who can makes me win, I want to win as much as possible in open leagues to farm play points and chests.
BUT I'm not a big fan of the shiny aggro decks in the actual meta. I know theese decks are in a really god spot at the moment, but I like interactive decks, and I like combo/strategy based decks.
What deck should I buy ? I'm looking for a T1-T2 deck with interesting gameplay, interactivity, and fun, but wihout blue (I don't like blue color.)
On paper magic, I have a Kiki chord deck which is super fun, I play it on fnm but to be honest, the deck is not that good, I don't see this deck becoming T1 or even stay in T2. It's ok for FNM and some modern event, but for comptetive league on MTGO, I don't think so. I also have a storm, living end and black white token and it's the same thing with theese decks. They are powerfull, I enjoy playing them, but it's really hard to have consistents wins against the actual meta, because theese decks have some unwinable match ups :/
What do you think guys? I was looking at tron, but the meta is very bad for it, on the other hand, tron is not likely to go tier 3, and when the meta will change, there is many chances that it will go T1 again.
Currently looking into Suicide Bloo/Thing Ascension, and some kind of Enchantress deck, though not quite sure what qualiies as good or not. Any and all suggestions are appreciated, thanks!
Boggles is kind of enchantress deck I guess but I'm not really familiar with enchantress types decks
What deck(s) would be good contenders in an open meta? I'd like to start solidifying my plans, as sideboarding is sort of my biggest weak point and I'd like to get some practice in before I decide to take the deck.

Thank for your advices.
