I think you could try something like Mardu control/midrange or Grixis control. It seems that you like interaction and both decks are interactive with control/midrange style of play. I don't know if you want deck now or are willing to spend longer time on building it and buy more pieces when you get more money-if that's the case I would recommend you Jund which is the best deck of that kind unless you want to go for even more reactive plan and might want to try Jeskai Nahiri control.
Hello all, seeking some advice on what to pick up for my first Modern deck. I am thinking of buying in to one of these decks: Affinity, Merfolk, Burn or Abzan Company.
Here's some of my thinking on each of these decks, and would appreciate any corrections or advice on any of what I've said.
Affinity - Looks to be a highly competitive deck and I enjoy the idea of it taking a long time to master it. I enjoy playing with lots of synergistic cards. However, am concerned that it will often have a big target on its head and will be at the receiving end of a lot of hate. Am also worried that there could be potential bans in the future? I know this was being discussed earlier in the year.
Merfolk - This deck appeals to me on a more emotional level. I enjoy the look of the play style and how the deck runs together. Am worried about having a couple of really bad matchups with this deck though, as Affinity and Infect make up a large portion of my meta.
Burn - Looks like an easier way to jump in to the format, although am concerned that the deck will become boring after becoming familiar with it and it's matchups.
Abzan Company - Obviously on the more expensive side but plays some of my favourite colours and types of spells. Not really familiar with playing combo but would be an exciting new challenge and feels like the sort of deck that would be interesting to play for a long time.
I am definitely a fan of proactive play styles, but would like a deck that will last a good long while and be fun to play for years to come. The transferability of cards is somewhat of a concern, as having the options to port cards in to other decks/formats would be good, but not vital.
I play abzan company answer this question do you like puzzles? Do you have a good understanding of modern? Do you want a decks that has lot of decisions and want to be able to grind? Abzan company is really cool because its Plan a is the infinite combos plan b is just as good because your board will most likely be flooded with dorky creatures so you can just activate Gavony Township once or twice and just win. If you want I can pm you my current list and pm you the budget list I used however the budget list is very good and doesn't lack very much.
I'm wondering what deck is best to play at my weekly events. The sizes range from about 4-16 players of various skill level. I am quite often the best or second player in the room, not to say that I am good, but that we get a lot of relatively new/inexperienced/casual players. There are a lot of janky decks like Slivers, and a lot of variability among players who show up and what deck they bring. I think most of the top decks are represented in some amount, but there's a lot of inconsistency among the players that show up, so there's little in the way of consistency among the decks.
I have the following decks completely built: UW Gifts Tron, Infect, Abzan CoCo (minus Horizon Canopy), Affinity, UWR Control (pre-Nahiri/Ancestral Visions). I have spent the most time playing UW Tron by a significant margin, which also means I have a play style more suited to that deck. I'm extremely comfortable with and knowledgeable of the format as a whole, so I have a good grasp of how all the decks operate, sideboard options for them etc.
Anyway, if you guys have some insight, feel free to help me out.
Hey guys, i need some advice. I currently have Jund(can convert to Junk), Bogles (without Canopy, i just built this last week), U-Tron, UR Through the Breach, Death and Taxes. I have 6-7 PPTQs coming up and i want to crush them. I normally play Jund but lately i have been facing Tron and other decks that try to just go bigger. I really like Bogles for that reason but i also dont have the Canopys and due to being 19 and needing to save my money for my car i cannot get them until the Spring at the earliest. UR Through the Breach is my little pet, its so much fun. It functions similarly to old Twin lists and once it gets to 5 mana gets a Breach and an Emrakul down. Its really consistent, i have built two versions and we just got the Eldrazi Wish spoiled im brewing with. I played Pod for a year before it got the hammer, switched to Junk, and then to Jund. So i have most of my experience with that shell. Lots of big mana decks in the area, i have Fulminators, Crumble, Slaughter Games in the board but it still seems bad.

Hello all. I'm looking to finally start playing modern after about a year of following it and am trying to figure out what deck I should play. Ideally I would like to be playing lantern control, but seeing as how I have approximately zero pieces for it and the high skill level it takes to play I figured I would start with something a bit easier, but still on the control axis. I have recently acquired a playset of snapcaster mages, and I already own playsets of most of the khans fetches and shocklands, as well as paths, lightning bolts and quite a few other modern staples including a full playset of the tron lands. I'm gravitating a bit towards something grixis-y, maybe cruel control? I'm absolutely looking for suggestions though. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
EDIT: I forgot to fill this out.
Cards you already own: snaps, paths, khan fetches, shocklands, tron lands, a smattering of other modern staples
Colors you like to play: preferably something with blue. I'd like to put my recently acquired snapcasters to use.
Style you like to play: Control. The harder the control the better.
Level you want to play at, or aim to build up to: I'd like to start with FNM, maybe something more midlevel in the future.

Cruel Control is bad.
Grixis Control is good.
Jeskai Nahiri/Control is great.
Although if you want something that is just straight up, hardcore control, Esper Control might be the closest thing Modern has to that. It's a deck that can be really bad, or very good, mostly because it's very skill intensive.
I am currently playing Mono Utron and Im thinking of branching out to G/R tron, I find the Time Walk deck interesting as well. I dont have problem getting the cards, what I'm having problems with is that I want to play a deck which is balanced against different archetypes (if such a deck exists) or at least a deck which has the fewest weaknesses or can cope easier that the others against the bad MU
Cards you already own: core tron cards, modern staple blue counterspells, no problems with lands
Colors you like to play: any color
Style you like to play: combo/control
Level you want to play at: FNM or a bigger league if I have a chance
Well, if you want to play balanced deck in terms of mu's the Tron is not for you. Tron is known to be loop sided deck with mostly great and very bad mu's and very few close ones. I assume you want 50:50 deck and as that the best option is probably Jund. It has some very bad mu's ant not (many) really good ones but is slightly favoured against most and can be tuned to be even at least postboard against almost any deck (there are some exceptions of that).
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check if I will like the playstyle of Jund.

Hey guys again. Is it possible to build affinity or infect for $250 that's all I have left rn. And what would a $250 list look like?
No, Infect would be closer to $600, I think. Affinity is nearly $800.
You could do a budget list. In fact, there are around 2-3 people at my LGS that run budget Affinity and budget Infect. They don't do too well, although they are all pretty new to the game as well. In my opinion, the budget Affinity list is better. It has given me more of a run for my money, outside of the occasional turn 3 kill by Infect (since I had no blocker or removal for Glistener Elf).
Just build Affinity without the most expensive cards first - Arcbound Ravager...Steel Overseer...Glimmervoid, Inkmoth Nexus. Oh yeah, I forgot Mox Opal. It's a pretty key card to the deck, so I'd go for that first probably out of all of these cards...maybe the Nexus. Cranial Plating on a creature still kills well. You just don't have as many multiple angles of attack, which could be good in some ways since if you are a new player, the deck gets tougher to play the more angles of attack you have available. Just make it linear with Galvanic Blast and Shrapnel Blast.

I assume this will be jund, I am curious if there will be some other options available. From what I can tell most of the T1 decks have a lot of autopilot and just go over other decks and knowing the matchup is king. I am wondering if T1.5 decks are able to consistently put up results if there is a much higher familiarity than your average deck and can be tailored for any metagame.
Also I love life from the loam and mystical teachings but those doesnt seem to be in competitive deck just now.
If you want to beat big mana decks like Tron I would go with Infect. It has great game against these decks by being faster than them and them not playing enough (suitable) interaction. I wouldn't go with Bogles though. I don't play it myself so I could be wrong here but I would expect Bogles to have bad game against Tron as well because of the big amount of sweepers Tron plays.
Infect would be pretty good except there are more UR/URW players here than any other archetype. My local meta has like 10-15 people always playing blue based control even when it isnt good. Paths, Snaps, Bolts, everywhere. I can consistently beat those decks down with my Jund deck but the top tables are all riddled with Tron and Valakut/Breach decks. Im thinking i just have to have Crumble in my SB along with the Mages and S-Games.
Also i dont have alot of money, so buying a new deck is pretty much out of the question.

is the actual card blood moon not very good for you? also if you are having issues with the top tables and they are always land based comboish decks, play 4 ghost quarter/some number of tectonic edge, and 4 surgical sideboard.
abzan company, nahiri jeskai and grixis delver also somewhat fill the criteria, but like you said it, jund is the king of the 50/50. I believe you will enjoy abzan company above else, is very hard to play and you can meta/tune to fight everything i believe.
