With the recent stagnation of the Lantern IQs, and The Dark Tournament not working out we decided to start up a new tournament for MTGS users to get there monthly Modern fix. These reward no points, and there will be no end of year major event. These are intended solely as singular, month to month tournaments, with the intent of bringing everyone together to have fun, and play some magic.
Remember when you sign up, these are our goals for the games:
1. To further the Mtg Sal community and bring people together.
2. To further Modern format as a whole. Brewing/ tweaking archetypes/ Refining playing skills.
3. To have fun and be friendly yet still competitive and professional.
The Rules
1. All Modern Rules apply here, as well as normal magic rules.
2. This will be best of 3 games, Single elimination rounds(You win 2 games you move on to next round, you lose 1 round you're out). You may sideboard between games.
Part 1: Pre-game
1. You must have Cockatrice downloaded, with all sets updated, and registered on the main site. See http://www.woogerworks.com/index.php/accountregistration
2. You must post your cockatrice name, and deck code via post in this thread to sign up.
3. You must send me your cockatrice name, and deck code via Private message when you are ready to lock your deck in. At this point no more changes can be made to your deck for the duration of the tournament, and the deck code is final.
AFTER THIS YOUR DECK IS LOCKED IN AND CANT BE CHANGED.
Part 2: Playtime!
1.When the pairings go up, its up to you to message each other and figure out when you will play, and who will create the match.
2. When you find a time for both of you, post up the time here, so we can try to get a judge, or at least a member of the community to view the match.
3. When you create the match, title it "Salvation Super Bowl (name) vs. (name), make it so spectators can view the match, and chat. Set a password to: Salvation
4. If someone is more then 9 minutes late, and did not reschedule ahead of time, it is a round loss. It is up to the players to talk that one out.
5. The winner of the best of 3 will advance to next week. If a Official Judge is present, they will post the results. If not, a spectator can vouch for the results. If neither are there, then both parties must post up the result.
6. If an Illegal action is preformed (missing a dark confidant trigger) the Judges present can decide to revert the game state, or rule it a game loss. If no spectator, or Judge could see the move for what ever reason (In this case, hands are not revealed) then it results in a game loss.
7. Byes and Free Space. Depending on the amount of players, the bracket might end up with a Free space. Free space is reserved for 24 hours after the start of a tournament to change into a participant. These are either a late entry or someone who entered and was missed in registration. Should the slot not be filled, it becomes a bye. Should some one be removed from the tournament, either by infraction of rules or dropping, it will result in a bye for the other player.
8. If you don't complete your match in the 1 week time frame, you can appeal for a 3 day extension. If a winner isn't determined by then, both players are executed unless there are extenuating circumstances
Common issues:
Should the server drop: Restart whatever game they are on. Do not guess at board state.
One players internet crashes: It is up to the other player. Make a new time to play, or ask a judge to DQ the player whose internet lagged out.
FAQ
How do I know when I should sign up by?
Just take a look at the News/ Updates sections below for an up to date run down on when the current/ next sign ups are being held.
Is the upcoming new set legal?
If it's on cockatrice's official Oracle card database, then yes. Management will post for confirmation.
Where is my Deck Id/ Deck code?
The easiest way to find your deck Id is to build your deck in deck editor, and it will say it on the deck.
Is my decklist going to be revealed at the end of this?
The winning decklist will be revealed, unless you tell me not to.
Why do you need the Deck Code?
Anytime you enter a card into deck editor, it changes that code. Depending on how big your deck and SB are it can even add more numbers. But luckily, unless someone is hacking or clicking cards until the correct code comes up, no one can see the decklists. Once the deck code is locked in, that will ensure you use the same deck for the entire Tournament.
When should I be ready for the next game?
Sign up info can be located below in the News/ Updates sections. Once the tournament begins, we try to get in 1 rnd per week. When you play the match is up to you, and you're opponent though. Message each other, and try to find the most convenient time within that week.
What is a free spot? Do i have a bye?
Free spaces will sometimes pop up depending on how many players sign up. For 24 hours after the bracket is posted the free spot becomes open for late submitters. After 24 hours it becomes a bye.
I've stolen a lot of this primer from The Dark Tournament just to get stuff up and running, I will change it if anyone feels this is inappropriate
General Info and Updates:
We are holding a poll on whether to use XMage or Cockatrice in future, THE EVENT STARTING IN APRIL WILL USE COCKATRICE. Please vote here!
Current Sign up Info:
Sign ups are now open! View the primer and send me your details by March 30th for the April start!
April Salvation Super Bowl Competitors and Deck codes:
Got a question here:
As far as I know DTK isn't available via Oracle yet but that's really just a matter of time (guess a few days) so if I sign up now I'm not allowed to use DTK cards but somebody who signs up in two days will maybe be allowed to use them (if they are up until then).
That doesn't really make sense to me.
So can we clarify if DTK cards will be allowed or not? Because if yes then I'll wait with my sign up until the cards are out on Oracle. If no I can just sign up now.
We won't be starting until the start of next month by which time DTK will be legal, don't feel like you have to give me the deck code right now, I'm happy to wait so long as it is in on time. You can still give me your Cockatrice name and put yourself down for the tourny.
Is there any interest in switch to Xmage as the program of choice?
I ask bc I have used both and Xmage seems a lot easier (it has built in rules engines, most cards are there and it has a tournament function built in to it).
So for this first attempt I'm thinking we stick to Cockatrice because I've gotten the impression it is more widely used. That said I'll open a straw poll on it and put it in the news and updates bit to vote for next time!
Annnd here's my token request to do these things on MTGO. Besides being shady, cockatrice is just broken. I know MTGO has a cost associated. But honestly, if you can't afford to spend a little money on your hobby, this is probably not the right game for you.
Shady as in WOTC has sent out a cease and desist to stop people stealing their IP with cockatrice. Broken as in the interface is garbage. MTGO interface is far from perfect but it makes cockatrice look really awful and amateurish.

In fact, adding an upfront cost to a tournament like this would potentially increase attendance and the completion rate for players. If you make that investment before it starts, both buying the deck and a small $3-$5 entry cost or something, you incentivize people to stick it out through the end. When it's a free Trice or Xmage event, it's really easy to just lose interest or drop out when life comes up (or if you just get lazy).
I second LEH's points. I'd be happy to pay entry fees for this but A: shady legality and B: although I could be trusted to deal with that, there is no reason anyone should believe that
I'd love to play MTGO and have this hosted there some day but right now I'm unemployed, living with my parents whilst I look for a job and my paper decks are budget as all hell whilst I slowly trade up for stuff, not so much cash for MTGO right now (on the bright side I have lots of time to run stuff like this!)
Quick reply to the comment that cockatrice is broken. MTGO is a program that lets you play magic online, cockatrice is a program that provides a digital table top, it does not let you play magic the same way MTGO does.
Well it looks like this is going to be smaller (and maybe over faster) so hopefully we can keep people interested. Also we have an actual elimination system for people not showing up to matches.
A quick reminder to everyone that signups/decklists need to be done by monday! As things stand we are a little low on numbers so any additional participants would be great!
