It is the fiercest competition on either side of reality. Organized by human businessmen who make their fortune in the underbelly of the black market,
and muscled by the most notoriously cutthroat demons Spirit World has to offer.
Millionaires sponsor competitors, and in turn they fight for their lives, for honor, glory, and riches beyond imagination.
Hordes of demons and humans alike crowd the stands, all eager for blood...
But the question stands... who will win?
...and who will walk out alive?
Dark Tournament Management Note
With the recent stagnation of the Lantern IQs we decided to start up a new tournament for MTGS users to get there monthly Modern fix. Unlike the Lantern Iqs, these reward no points, and there will be no end of year major event. These are intended soley as singular, month to month tournaments, with the intent of bringing everyone together to have fun, and play some magic.
Remember when you sign up, these are our goals for the games:
1. To further the Mtg Sal community and bring people together.
2. To further Modern format as a whole. Brewing/ tweaking archetypes/ Refining playing skills.
3. To have fun and be friendly yet still competitive and professional.
Dark Tournament Rules
1. All Modern Rules apply here, as well as normal magic rules.
2. This will be best of 3 games, Single elimination rounds(You win 2 games you move on to next round, you lose 1 round you're out). You may sideboard between games.
Part 1: Pre-game
1. You must have Cockatrice downloaded, with all sets updated, and registered on the main site. See http://www.woogerworks.com/index.php/accountregistration
2. You must post your cockatrice name, and deck code via post in this thread to sign up.
3. You must send me your cockatrice name, and deck code via Private message when you are ready to lock your deck in. At this point no more changes can be made to your deck for the duration of the tournament, and the deck code is final.
AFTER THIS YOUR DECK IS LOCKED IN AND CANT BE CHANGED.
Part 2: Playtime!
1.When the pairings go up, its up to you to message each other and figure out when you will play, and who will create the match.
2. When you find a time for both of you, post up the time here, so we can try to get a judge, or at least a member of the community to view the match.
3. When you create the match, title it "Dark Tournament (name) vs. (name), make it so spectators can view the match, and chat. Set a password to: TheDark
4. If someone is more then 9 minutes late, and did not reschedule ahead of time, it is a round loss. It is up to the players to talk that one out.
5. The winner of the best of 3 will advance to next week. If a Official Judge is present, they will post the results. If not, a spectator can vouch for the results. If neither are there, then both parties must post up the result.
6. If an Illegal action is preformed (missing a dark confidant trigger) the Judges present can decide to revert the game state, or rule it a game loss. If no spectator, or Judge could see the move for what ever reason (In this case, hands are not revealed) then it results in a game loss.
7. Byes and Free Space. Depending on the amount of players, the bracket might end up with a Free space. Free space is reserved for 24 hours after the start of a tournament to change into a participant. These are either a late entry or someone who entered and was missed in registration. Should the slot not be filled, it becomes a bye. Should some one be removed from the tournament, either by infraction of rules or dropping, it will result in a bye for the other player.
8. If you don't complete your match in the 1 week time frame, you can appeal for a 3 day extension. If a winner isn't determined by then, both players are executed unless there are extenuating circumstances
Dark Tournament Judges:
1 or 2 of these people will have ruling power over whatever match they are overseeing. When they are Judging, whatever they say goes in the match. This extends to spectators as well.
Judges/Requirements to be one:
Judges, if any must be agreed on by both competing players. Any spectator, or volunteer can act as a Judge as long as both players agree. Judge(s) must be named before the match begins.
Common issues:
Should the server drop: Restart whatever game they are on. Do not guess at board state.
One players internet crashes: It is up to the other player. Make a new time to play, or ask a judge to DQ the player whose internet lagged out.
Dark Tournament Questions and Concerns
How do I know when I should sign up by?
Just take a look at the News/ Updates sections below for an up to date run down on when the current/ next sign ups are being held.
Is the upcoming new set legal?
If it's on cockatrice's official Oracle card database, then yes. Management will post for confirmation.
Where is my Deck Id/ Deck code?
The easiest way to find your deck Id is to build your deck in deck editor, and it will say it on the deck.
Is my decklist going to be revealed at the end of this?
The winning decklist will be revealed, unless you tell me not to.
Why do you need the Deck Code?
Anytime you enter a card into deck editor, it changes that code. Depending on how big your deck and SB are it can even add more numbers. But luckily, unless someone is hacking or clicking cards until the correct code comes up, no one can see the decklists. Once the deck code is locked in, that will ensure you use the same deck for the entire Tournament.
When should I be ready for the next game?
Sign up info can be located below in the News/ Updates sections. Once the tournament begins, we try to get in 1 rnd per week. When you play the match is up to you, and you're opponent though. Message each other, and try to find the most convenient time within that week.
What is a free spot? Do i have a bye?
Free spaces will sometimes pop up depending on how many players sign up. For 24 hours after the bracket is posted the free spot becomes open for late submitters. After 24 hours it becomes a bye.
General Info and Updates:
The first ever Dark Tournament is officially under way. We are now into the 2nd rnd of the Febuary Dark Tournament. Sign ups for March most likely won't start until March first. Look here for updates as it comes closer to march.
Current Sign up Info:
There are no sign ups open right now, as the Feb Dark Tournament is currently underway. Sign ups for March most likely won't start until March 1st. Look here for updates as it comes closer to March.
I'll join. Also I'd suggest xmage over cockatrice if not using magic online. You would have to confirm that all of the cards for your deck are in the program before playing though.
I'd say stick with Cockatrice. As it tries to emulate paper magic, not be a rules enforcer. If part of this tournament's goals is brewing it wouldn't be good to remove cards from the pool.
I'll join, my cockatrice username is Hazzrd and I'll send in a deck code soon, will we pm you our decklists similiar to how we did in Lanterns IQs just so yoy can confirm our lists are legal?
I wasn't actually aware of Xmage. Still the Lantern Iqs have always used Cockatrice, and I feel like at this point, Cockatrice is much more universal. Maybe in the future if Xmage becomes more popular we can try switching over to it, but for now I think we can all just put our big boy pants on and use Cockatrice. I feel confidant the competitors can stick to the rules, and hopefully there will be a judge, or some spectators around anyway.
You don't need to bother sending in a deck list. Think about it like going to a small local event. Do you need to register your deck for that? If a player is seen playing an illegal card, they get disqualified, and lose the match.

Kevinliu, you don't need to pm me a decklist. Just post the deck code, and your cockatrice user name here to sign up. Then Pm me the Deck code, and User name when you are ready to lock your deck in.

Id love to play in these kinds of things but I will not use cockatrice (or any other illegal mtg proggie). If only we could just use mtgo...
That said, there are a few weekly MTGO tourneys that are free run by our beloved Blippy. But something like this with a monthly leader board would be pretty fun. Id even pay to get into it.
i'd love to be part of this, but living in the UK and having non-negotiable working hours means that organising a play-time might prove difficult and i'd genuinely worry about getting DQed on account of not being able to negotiate an hour or whatever in order to play.
what's the general opinion on timezones and the problems they cause?

I think I rather just use cockatrice, I am thinking about using xmage in the near future but with a lot of people still using cockatrice I think it's best to stay with it.
