Maybe check out this thread first to see if people will help you out.
Other than that I guess it depends on what you want. Affinity has the most explosive draws, is the aggro deck in the format, but is also volatile and prone to bad draws which lets other decks stabalize. It is also hated out fairly easily as artifact hate is common.
Pod is the hardest deck to play I'd say, but ti is also the best if you are going into an unknown meta/wide open field. It has a lot of options to it and can combat really anything.
UWR has had a lot of success in the past, but since the meta has shifted with the introduction of Khans it has fallen out of favor it seems.
I'm sure that other people can give you better ins and outs of each deck, but if I had to suggest one then I'd say that Pod is your best bet as it can fill a lot of roles and has had more success than pretty much every other deck in the format. Can't really go wrong with it.
I'm biased as I play pod, but I like the deck a lot, especially if you're willing to put in thanks time. It also can morph to most metas (except tron... UGH) and is just overall fun and feels rewarding to play. However, I'd wait to buy anything until the ban list update, as some are speculating pod as a potential ban.
WUR control has lost a little ground on the top decks. It still can be adjusted for local metas to compete, but has not put up any real good finishes in large events as of late.
Affinity is an explosive deck that is probably the best aggro deck in the format. Its easily hated on and struggles at times.
Pod is probably the easiest deck to adjust to metas, but one of the hardest to pilot. You will have to sit down and play multiple games against multiple different decks to understand the correct plays, but its worth it.
If you are looking to play in larger events I would suggest Pod. If you are tinkering around in a local meta any would work.
Pod by far the best.
UWR might be good too if they unban AV. If they also unban sword of the meek, the shell will also be UWR so you'll be able to play both decks.
if they unban sword of the meek, the shell goes to ESPER not UWR. Thopter foundry/sword of the meek already screams UWB and gifts, and then you add in that gifts finds unburial rites, and you have yourselves most of the engine of the old Gifts control decks from extended, minus dark depths and vamp hex mage.

There were gifts decks being played here and there a while back and they could not compete. I dont think the addition of Sword of the Meek would do much to boost them much.
Sword of the Meek provides gifts decks what they really need--a value engine that plays well out of the graveyard to make gifts piles that truly force your opponent into a corner. IF I have academy ruins out and gifts for sword, thopter foundry, unburial rites, and elesh norn, how do you beat that if you're a fair deck? give me sword-elesh, and then deal with next-turn thopter sword online? Not to mention it's a more compact combo that makes it easier to run a suite of cheap disruption to back it up and gain life at instant speed instead of having to reanimate stuff at sorcery speed in combo matches. It was banned for a reason, and it was the gifts control decks packing thopter sword as an inevitability engine.

Then everyone starts running Rest in Peace along side the artifact hate in most decks for Affinity. I dont think it would do much in the gifts shell. It may spawn a whole new deck, but in my opinion it wouldnt do what you say. I played WUR against the Esper gifts deck and won probably 8 out of 10 games. If we would have sided I would have sided in RIP and shut down the recursion and shut down the deck.
Yes it was a powerful engine back in the day, but the new cards we have now have made it a real weak engine. Think Loam weak in Modern.
The esper gifts shells with thopter-sword were nothing like the esper gifts decks of today. They were FAR, FAR stronger, partly due to the format and cards like bloodbraid elf running around, and everyone trying to compete with turn three storm decks. Rest in Peace didn't exist at the time the deck was played, admittedly, but that does not in any way shape or form change the mainboard power of the deck, and any control shell can sideboard to improve against expected hate. Individual artifact hate doesn't do much to stop a combo that depends on the graveyard and is therefore built with recurring it in mind unless you have exile based removal, which doesn't see heavy play at the current time. Enchantments are right in the wheelhouse of esper to deal with (look at esper charm) and I wouldn't hang my hat on stony silence to stop a thopter-sword control deck.
Another way to look at it--Esper was a solid deck before even KTK brought us deltas and strands, Wafo-Tapa Nearly made day 2 of a GP just weeks before fetches were spoiled playing an esper list, and he didn't make day 2 because he couldn't finish his opponent in turns because his win con took too long to come online, in two separate rounds. Thopter-Sword is not only a much more efficient win con to get online, it also helps you stabilize on its own, which is huge for a control deck to not need to play a "dedicated" win con with no other utility. I both hate and love white sun's zenith in esper, but every time I cast it I wish I could just run 8 colonnades instead.

I stopped reading when you said Esper decks were solid before KTK because 1 pro player nearly made day 2 of an event piloting the deck. Seriously, Esper was not strong pre KTK, adding the fetches didnt help. We have not seen an Esper deck top 8 an event since KTk's release.
I think what you think is a strong deck really isnt. Until I see results, more then a single pro nearly making it to day 2, I will continue to say Esper is unplayable. I also dont think the thopter sword combo would do much to change that.
But we can agree to disagree and when a Esper deck makes day 2 or maybe breaks into the top 16 you can say I was wrong.

Im sure that Wafo-Tapa definitely made day 2 and that he placed 60th or something in that region. He did have a draw or two but hey those are his trademark.
Thopter sword would go into a UWR shell. You win with either the combo or with burn + snapcaster +some thopters if they pack too much graveyard hate.
Gifts is too slow and too easy to hate.
The end :).
I love gifts. I do. But anything besides uw gifts tron doesn't seem right. Too easy to hate out. Tron can still do it's thing and control till wormcoil hits. Normal gifts can't.
