i think it has be proven that Gideon belongs to the Elite of Planeswalkers.
So why do i almost never see him anywhere ? Not even in Control-Decks.
Is he not good enough for Modern anymore ?
I know myself hes 5 mana, not 4 . . . but this card is so insane in turning the favor in my experience !
+2 This is a great way to survive more turns. Or even to just get all creatures tapped to hit back with a 6/6 Gideon. But the best thin about this for me is that it forces opponents creatures to run blindly into mine. This leaded into soo many creature-kills in my favor. The ability is pure Removal in my eyes. & it gets Gideon to 8 Loyality the turn he enters !
S
0 is like the Ultimate. its Gideons way to win the game. i just dislike that its not as good as Sarkhan, the Dragonspeakers win-strike d:(
but the cooperation with his other 2 abilities, makes this 0 ability fortunately much better. Beware of path, etc >.<
-2 works great with +2 & can be repeated Removal.
In order for him to be at his best, you have to make sure being even in Board-presence or slightly behind. Otherwise its just Fog.
i play Gideon in an Abzan Aggro-Midrange-Deck & usually as he enters, he brings the Action & makes the Game run. +2 is Removal in my Deck.
What are you thinking of this card & why it isnt played right now ?
Modern's been just too fast for this kind of deck (midrange-super friends), and the amount of added CA on counters, bounces, draw spells and whatnot make any strategy based on 1:1 exchanges look very silly. Hence, why I can't play it anymore - it takes too long of a grindy match of 1:1s (that are rendered useless by whatever my opponent plays) so I can cast Big G.
Still, Gideon Jura is very powerful. But one thing I've learned about Modern is that you can never count on any spell resolving, card remaining in your hand or getting to the 4th-5th land. At least, I've never been able to do so. I just lose.
i played it in UW control years ago. obviously at its best after sweeping the board and stabilizing. makes it a late late late game card, and those decks already have colonnade and Ajani or Elspeth to finish things off.

I speak in sarcasm because calling people ******* ******** is not allowed.
Answer to the question:
He is stuck in your hand while you're dead on turn 4. Or he's in the graveyard after being Mana Leaked. He's a good card and has been played but is too slow in a field of Delver, Combo, Burn, and doesn't do enough against Pod.

Oh, I'm allowed to say Gideon Jura sucks now? No lynch mob this time?
Anyway, I never got this guy. He's not even a planeswalker; he's a beatstick that can conditionally spot-remove. If you want Modern beatsticks that can survive a sweeper, there's Celestial Colonnade and Batterskull, plus a dozen other options. He doesn't even have trample, nor haste. So to answer the question: He's out-classed by the typical better options available in the bigger Modern card pool. Why he's still three bucks is beyond me; maybe Commander runs him.

This signature holds priority until end of comment.
Gideon Jura is a great card and basically tailor-made for control.
+2 protects and buys you time
-2 is repeatable removal that works with the +2
The 0 ability acts as a wincon and finisher.
That being said he does cost five mana which can be pretty rough against the current field and he has some competition in the 5 drop spot too. Batterskull and Baneslayer Angel for example.
I think the format is currently too fast for him and a card like Batterskull has built-in resiliency and Lifelink which is obviously very useful against decks packing burn.
Ditto to that. I ran him as a two-of mainboard in UW control for a while in modern, and he pulled his weight there, basically ensuring victory if you got to untap with him, but when I switched to esper, baneslayer was just better. He doesn't do anything to pad your life total, so unless you're already playing a clean mana base with 2 colors and kitchen finks/rev to pad your life total, the baneslayer angel is just a better option for the mana cost to stabilize against the grindy midrange decks.
That being said, if bannings or printings shook the format up in such a way as to make splinter twin a bigger percentage of the metagame while scaling back on the delver decks, I'd go back to Gideon in a heartbeat, as that's where he really shines, as a win con that's safe to tap out for against twin.

Gideon would be run more often if he could regain lost life. Batterskull will be run in his place atm because it can do that. In such a fast meta control decks may stabalize in time but could then lose to top-decked burn spells. Also batterskull can often times do a better job of playing defense than gideon thanks to the vigilance, where as gideon must choose either to attack or to +2. And his +2 isn't often a sustainable plan.
Gideon is a faster clock and is better at protecting other planeswalkers of yours, where batterskulls lifelink doesnt help.
Gideon can act as a stall tactic though, sort of like an ensnaring bridge, giving you time to stabilize or get control. Even if he never attacks he might keep you in the game two more turns. He might also set up a blow out if you run something like Ætherize. There's some value there.

I can understand the arguments against Gid, but if you want to play a Modern control deck but lack the funds to make something tier 1, there's few better finishers on a budget. I run him as well and he's closed out several matches for me. If you can't afford Batterskulls or Celestial Colonnades, Gideon Jura might be the finisher for you.
batterskull is as low as $14. Colonnade as low as $12. Gideon is $2. If you can somehow afford a mana base that can support Gideon and isn't straight blue/white control (which by the way is one of the only decks that reasonably does play Gideon at the moment anyway) but can't afford batterskull or colonnade, two of the most important cards for the archetype, I don't know what to tell you. Hell, kitchen finks is $2 a copy. Sure, I get that people look for replacements to cryptic command and remand, or alternatives to snapcaster mage. But colonnade is one of the most important lynchpins in the UWx control wheelhouse in modern, and is in fact the first card I would recommend dropping cash for if you want to get into the archetype, and batterskull is a super important modern staple to have access to for MOST decks outside of the Pod archetype and certain combo decks just because blood moon is a card in this format, and people pretty much have to attack with creatures unless they're on some kind of storm combo.
I love Gideon. I ran him as a 2-of in UW control, and he was exactly what the deck needed in that slot. A threat you can tap down for against twin or fair decks and not get punished too heavily for. But in esper, or UWR, or even Bant, you have much better options for that slot (discard in esper, backed by extractions, or even just more slot removal. UWR has burn, enough said. Bant has access to krosan grip and bant charm.
Snapcaster? Clique? Cryptic? Sure, budget alternatives exist for you, and you can do fine with them. Celestial Colonnade and Batterskull replacements for control?
I hear that shard volley is what all the cool kids are using as a budget replacement for lightning bolt. Seriously. If you want to play UWx control in this format, fork out the cash for colonnades and a batterskull, it's the most important $80 you'll spend on your path to joining us on the dark side.

Why.do people automaticaly think of controll Decks, when its Gideon Jura ?? have you ever experienced how insane the +2 is if you got a board ful of creutures ready to deathblock everything ? O
His +2 doesn't protect you from reach or alternate win conditions.
His -2 is expensive (5 mana) and sorcery speed. it's also conditional.
His 0 happens to be vulnerable to Path to Exile, a card that otherwise is stuck in your opponent's hand.
Too many flaws on a finisher.
