They are literally GUILDGATES with SCRY 1 written on them. Even if I had access to every card in the format to build ANY deck I wanted, id never run them in anything besides AdNauseam.

Just finished top 5 in a PTQ on Sunday with 1 in my deck, it was actually relevant. Also saw a good deal of the top 8 running at least a few. Obviously don't go crazy with them but 1-3 is a good number to me. You are not going to curve out perfectly every game and these help smooth things out.
They were crucial in a Boat Brew pile I made.
Of course, that pile not only durdled like a champ, it really needed the scry.
It was totally fine sacrificing the early game so it could dominate mid and late, mind you.
@RDS: you know, there's no greater mark of a person spoiled by mana than the line "literally guildgates with scry."
It's also awfully disrespectful to New Benalia. Which was an uncommon.
They're insanely slow, but surprisingly better than they look at first glance.
In competitive modern I don't think there is a place for any temples unless they are being cheated into play with a primeval titan but you don't want to draw them because they are so slow compared to other options.
I considered running a few in Scapeshift, then I decided to play Vedalken Shackles and needed the higher island count. I certainly could see many U/x decks potentially wanting them, depending on how many enters tapped lands they have at the moment. U/W Tron is probably the first deck I plan to put together to try them out....
It depends on your mana curve more than anything else, but I would say most non-aggro decks could benefit from running one or two without being slowed down too much.
I don't think most people realize how good library manipulation at low opportunity cost is. Blue cantrips are enough to shift the entire legacy metagame, and Ponder is considered too good for modern.

The scry lands don't allow you dig as deep as ponder and preordain and they don't ruin your game down as much as a tapped land at the wrong time can.

They don't dig as far, but a turn 1 cantrip uses just as much mana as a temple loses you. The temples are weaker but they still have a very powerful effect and they do have the advantage of taking up a land slot rather than a spell slot. Many decks could afford 1 or 2 temples in the manabase.
I've found that 2 enemy-colored Temples are fine in my BWR Twin brew and its horrific colour requirements. As it tends to behave like midrange, though, I wish they could be enemy-colored manlands.

No doubt they are ok/good turn one but after that on just about every other turn they are significantly worse.
I'm still missing a Sulfur Falls for my UWR Control deck (it's out of stock at every LGS in my area) so I've been using a Temple of Epiphany in the meantime. It's been cool as a one-of, but I think I'd prefer the Sulfur Falls over it.

UWR couldn't afford it with the way their mana is, last I checked.
They make 3 land hands more keepable in low curve decks and 4 landers more keepable in control or midrange.
Everything I said there still stands.
1) fast decks don't want ETB tapped lands
2) slow decks want manlands as their ETB tapped lands

Honestly I think they're too slow for what they do in anything that doesn't really, really want the scry.
