can get bolted, isnt strong on its own in creature fights. sounds bad in modern to me. what decks do you own in modern btw?
Sigh. Yes, it can get bolted, but the idea behind prowess is that it won't if you protect it properly - yes, you're putting more mana in than normal for it but that's why it has a choice between two relevant etbs so that if it does die you're not completely out on the mana investment. THAT is flexibility and the type of cards/creatures that blue thrives on.
I own Grixis Control, Merfolk, Elves, Goblins, mono blue turns, and I can build a whole bunch of other things if I'd like but I prefer to play my own shells that feature Islands - currently I'm running mono blue control and I'm doing very well with it. I play a LOT of blue.

you might as well play swiftspear tho. or what if the card has to fight a goyf on its own? or tasigur?
this is one of the problems with blue in modern not just grixis:
"this continues to be a massive issue with Grixis Control in general – there's almost no way to configure your deck to have a variety of even and positive matchups against a plethora of strategies.
You aren't going to get any free wins, the games are going to be hard, and the majority of the time you'll be forced to give up playing as the control deck to start sneaking in points with Creeping Tar Pit and deploying “Ambush Viper” Snapcaster Mages to pressure opponents."
blue needs its own goyf and counterspell basically ( ok so maybe tasigur suffices) BUT
All of those turn three situations require setup, multiple cards, a commitment across the deck to making that happen, don't always happen on turn 3 (in most cases) and can easily be disrupted in many stages along the way.
A single card that bolts/counters/draws (choose two) is just that, overpowered, consistently good in most any situation, requires nothing else to set up other than hitting land drops and can't be disrupted other than countering it.
Just my two cents, but multi card engines vs single cards should not be compared. Modern is powerful, yes, but that would be over the top and isn't overly unique as a single card. It further turns UWR into another good stuffs deck that plays four of these cards because it is the best possible option.
"A single card that bolts/counters/draws (choose two) is just that, overpowered"
Actually its counter, bolt, bounce, not draw
compared to kologhans command? which can make you discard, shock a target and get your creature back from the graveyard into your hand?
its a 2 for 1 for 3 mana how is that OP?
or do people still think counter spell is too good for modern?
I misread in that case. Counter/bolt/bounce is much much more reasonable, otherwise it's just a better cryptic command 80% of the time for UWR. I actually think that would be fairly balanced after thinking it through more, card draw is always a risky thing and one of the most powerful things you can do so I always tend to be conservative with it.
I also want counterspell back in modern, I don't think it's too powerful at all.
My only issue tends to be with overly pushed cards as BGx is already goodstuffs.dec and I dislike cards that force people into playing them as they are strictly better than anything else out there. Don't get me wrong, you'll always have powerful stuff that is a cut above the rest of the card pool (lightning bolt, path, tarmogoyf, snap caster, liliana, etc) but I wouldn't want to get to the point where every color combo is just a goodstuffs deck.
I play 4C gifts by the way, I would love to have more counters that are viable and be able to up my blue count.
What would make all the world of difference is to give URx decks something on par with Abrupt Decay.
Abrupt Counter RU
Instant
"Abrupt Counter cannot be countered by spells or abilities.
Counter target spell with converted mana cost of 3 or less."
Might as well be "counterspell" in Modern, but with just enough drawback. Requires two colors that, without Twin, is one of the weaker colors in the format. Would be able to keep other counter-decks in check by being uncounterable. 2cmc sweet spot (1cmc usually too narrow, 3cmc unplayable, 4cmc better come with a side of fries). Allows answers to relevant threats in the early/mid/late game without being mostly dead late game like Remand and Mana Leak.
At 3cmc, I would love the option of something above. Maybe with a fourth option...
Izzet Command 1RU
Instant
"Choose two:
- Deal 3 damage to target creature or player.
- Counter target spell.
- Return target nonland permanent to its owner's hand.
- Scry 2."
Scry is not as powerful as a draw, but good for digging and can allow it to be cast if opponent has no targets for the bounce/counter modes. At 3 mana, that feels very reasonable considering what Kolaghan's Command and Ojutai's Command does and is not as powerful as Cryptic Command. Might feel a little too good for 3 mana still... but could be tweaked. Maybe 2 damage instead of 3. Maybe bounce non-creature non-land permanent.

I'll be update the subforums after posting this, so it will take a little bit until everything matches up. Of course, if you notice any issues, mistakes, omissions, typo, etc., definitely let me know and I'll see what can be done to fix it. Get excited for an awesome start to an awesome Modern season!
is Griselbrand combo a deck I should prepare for for the coming weekend?
Prepare for? No, unless you can find sideboard cards for that matchup which cross into others. Grafdigger's Cage is nice because it messes with Grishoalbrand and screws with Abzan Company. But you should definitely know how the matchup plays out with whatever deck you are using.
General note @ thread. SCG Indy this weekend is a big Modern Open. But the GPs aren't until the weekend after that. I've seen some confusion about this before and just want to clarify.

0.7% according to the most recent Modern Nexus metagame update.
played a face to Face Open yesterday, went 4-3 with Grixis Delver. I'll give a bit of a meta report. I won't go into much detail as this is just a meta thread
Round 1 I 2-0d Elves.
Round 2 I 2-1'd affinity
Roudn 3 I went 1-2 vs living end
Round 4 I went 0-2 vs hate bears
Round 5 I 2-1d mono white enduring ideal\
round 6 I 2-1d another elf deck
Round 7 I went 0-2 vs tron
surprised to see so many elf decks in an 124 player room. Apparently there were at least 2 Mono blue tron decks in the room and it was filled with aggro
proves that enough tron in fact DOES effect decks like abzan company meta shares% even if only at 6%.
How does that link prove anything of the sort?
how is it possible that having a terrible MU with a T1 deck that has been a pillar of modern for years does not affect your deck of choice?...
That's still not answering my question. That's evading it.
Again. How does that link prove anything of the sort? What is its relevance? It's not even about whether the argument stated is true or not; it's how the link proves it. The world might be round, but if someone pointed to an article analyzing the properties of Hydrogen and claimed that proved the world is round, I don't think it would be remiss to ask how in the world that actually proves it.
seriously Seth enough with this 'Tron is small' nonsense, Tron has always been a force to be reckoned with in Modern and has spent a considerable amount of time as a T1 deck, in some events it was heavily played as well, way above the expected, in the latest SCG open as the most obvious and recent example it was the most represented deck in day 2, also Tron historically has had a fair share of Top 8s
sometimes Tron was a force for 'good' keeping the utterly busted DRS Jund and Rhino Pod to the ground
sometimes Tron was mostly messing up fair decks and promoting t3 goldfishing
Tron has always been part of the modern meta, it affects other decks and is affected by them in return, the only thing that makes Tron 'special' is it's extremely spread MUs, so when Tron is high you just don't want to show up with a deck that loses to Tron, unless you devote 1/3 of your SB to it, much like Jund has historically done with a whole playset of fulmis being a pretty common choice
Tron causes some problems and many people hate it, many people hate Boggles as well, telling them to 'unhate' it is pretty pointless, telling them that it's all in their heads is 'odd' though, considering that you are the only person i've ever heard saying that Tron does not affect midrange and control deck's performance
Well, you sure spent a lot of time... attacking statements I never made. Of course Tron has an effect on the format, every single deck has an effect on the format, however small. However, when people blame it for the dearth of control, it's ludicrous because it isn't a large enough force in the format to achieve that; and to criticize it for midrange is especially hilarious considering we've got a really great midrange deck. As I've said, the problem control has had (although it has recovered a bit) is simply the cards aren't good enough, not that a deck you'll run into every 15 rounds or so is keeping it down.
Really, it's more fair to say that the format affects Tron than Tron affects the format. Let's look at the changes the format has recently had. Ancestral Vision and Sword of the Meek got unbanned, and those go into decks Tron would love to play against. The new Eldrazi decks are generally a favorable matchup for Tron. And Tron eats Nahiri decks alive. These factors have all made the format more favorable to the deck, so we're seeing it doing well.
Like I've said before, Tron doesn't suppress midrange/control decks... it gets suppressed by aggro and combo.
(it's admittedly more complicated than that, i.e. there are some aggro decks Tron has game against, but I'm speaking generally in terms of archetypes)
Regardless of how big metagame share it will have Tron will always been here (and it always was) as long as fair decks will see play. It's know as fair decks killer and it does very good job at it. Here I think it has big impact on the metagame because it keeps fair decks in check. Every time these decks grows in popularity Tron jumps in and keep them in check and as that preventing them to get too dominant. Modern would be completely different format without Tron.

I personally feel it would be a better one.

i didn't even look at the link, i'm not trying to answer your question, i'm just replying with something relevant
If you didn't look at the link and didn't try to answer the question, then you're bringing in something that was unrelated to what was being discussed. By definition you're not replying with something relevant.
Metagame is better than ever. Not enough not interactive combo deck out there to my taste and too many Company decks (personal preference, I don't enjoy it, so no offense as it is a powerful deck). I'd like to see more Storm and Grishoalbrand, more Hatebears and BW Tokens as well.
The current metagame kinda reminds of the old pre RTR metagame, which was by far the best metagame Modern ever had. There are just some things I have a beef with, but this will be always the case ^^
