So my lgs always runs modern on thursdays and its slowly seems to be dieing. When it first came out we had 30-40 people a night. I think the one night we were pushing close to 50. Recently tho its 25 people tops.I get that its not the new and exciting think anymore but i think it has a lot to do with if you are not playing the top 5 decks ie storm, pod, affinty, tron, splinter twin, you just lose. I am guilty of this to i usually play affinity but even tonight it was like god storm. game2 ok pod im bored all ready. Does wizards maybe need to drop the ban hammer on these decks? Even pro play its pretty much variants of these decks top 8. What do you guys think?
This is the way every format is. You can win with homebrew, but it requires a strong player and excellent knowledge of your local meta. I'd like if Wizards printed more cards that are powerful but not overwhelming more often, so that Modern could diversify more, but none of those decks really needs a ban just now.

Nothing needs a bad. But to be fair maybe a lot of the decks people were bringing in were just bad decks or glass cannon combo decks that people can easily answer. Anyways, homebrews can win, I have built many homebrews and have placed in modern FNM's against a competitive field. As long as the player is good, the deck can be good.

By the way, hope you enjoyed your first match against Storm.
i see you like picking fights on the internet? and it was not my first match agisnt storm it was probably my 200th try to stay on topic instead of being a jerk. as for the other posters i dont think i have ever seen a homebrew do well maybe the players cant pilot it right but its hard to play against combo decks
This is frankly just being ignorant. People dont complain that expensive things exist, they get annoyed when there are no alternatives to the expensive versions of cards.
Its a card game. People want to play the card game. They arent mad that certain pieces of cardboard are rare and collectable. They get upset when there arent alternative printings that allow them to play the game.

It's a two-way street. You get to ***** about decks that you don't like (because freedom of speech), I get to laugh when you're matched up against that deck (because I play that deck too). Seems fair to me.
You want to play against non-tier 1 decks, try the MTGO practice room or Cockatrice.

i was more or less complaning about people and the format if you actually read the post i also play those decks
I mean honestly modern games are super grindy which gets boring. There aren't enough unfair decks to make the games interesting in my opinion. Of course you don't like playing against the unfair decks, even if they provide a different change of pace from grinding out incremental advantages because modern is the grindiest grindfest of a format out there.
But then again, I like playing with Gifts Ungiven and modern lets me do that a bunch so thank god. That card is probably the most fun I have in magic.

What I think happened more than anything is that the new block didn't do much for Modern. It didn't introduce anything that was capable of shaking up Modern. We had cards like DRS last block, or even just the shock reprint that made Modern more accessible. Thassa and Anger of the Gods? Eidolon and Courser of Kruphix? I wouldn't call it a successful set for Modern, there were only a handful of playable cards, and nothing that changed the format significantly.
I don't know what you,re talking about. Our modern nights are still easily the most popular MTG nights at my LGS, and I see a wide variety of decks. BGx, Twin, Affinity, UWR Control, GW (both the small, Leonin Arbiter version and the big Loxodon Smiter/Wilt-Leaf Liege version), Storm, and sometimes a pod player or two, plus some amount of homebrews. I've recently been playing BW tokens, and managed to 3-0.
Modern is definitely my favourite format right now. It'll be fun if M15 or Khans produces interesting, non-broken cards that spawn new archetypes, but I think the format is still really fun right now.

Wizards banning Tier 1 decks won't change anything, as new Tier 1 decks will arise and people will play with those. Modern is a pretty diverse format at the moment.
i play to win i also run pod some nights. Why would you play to lose? im simply asking if people arebored of seeing the same old stuff
You play to win and yet you complain about the people that play with Tier 1 decks? I agree with Izzetmage, you complain too much... if you don't enjoy Modern as a whole, just drop it and play something else. The metagame won't accommodate to your needs and tastes.

Common sense is the most fairly distributed thing in the world, for each one thinks he is so well-endowed with it that even those who are hardest to satisfy in all other matters are not in the habit of desiring more of it than they already have. - René Descartes
At least in my area, people are tending away from Standard. They don't like having to dump money into a format that gives no returns when the sets rotate. The problem is largely due to the increase in MTG costs, and people preferring to invest in a format where their investment is still useful two or three years down the road. Obviously the format isn't going to shake up like Standard, but the deck diversity is certainly there, and bans change it up. It doesn't change up as much as Standard does but I wouldn't call the format stale.
In some ways, I feel you are lucky. I would love to have a bunch of the same decks playing at my LGS. Instead, I have to prepare for Amulet, GB, Reanimator, Troll/Worship, Merfolk, Goblins, Burn, UWR, etc. My SB often ends up looking very odd and as a slightly OCD type player, this bothers me. We don't even have a Pod player anymore. They don't come to our LGS and I would love to have more play testing vs. Pod, although I do a bunch at home.
When Modern was born, I played Caw Blade (UW Control), Merfolk, Melira Pod, Boros Landfall, and a few decks that I can't remember. Since quitting Standard 4 months ago, I have played Melira Pod, RUG Twin, Naya Humans, Bogles, Amulet, Scapeshift, Reanimator, GW Emrakul, Tron, Storm, and probably a few more decks that I'm forgetting. If the format is getting stale, part of that is you. You either play a deck for months and maximize your play skill with that deck or you branch out and have fun with many other decks. Or you can do a happy medium. You can't have your cake and eat it too (pretty sure I butchered that )

This whole thread is the problem with the format. Everyone wants different things from the format. Everyone has their own opinion about what is fun for them, without thinking about anyone else.

Combo is hard to play against until you know how to play against it, at which point it is extremely easy to play against.

If you want to reminisce on the golden age of the format, look to when Bloodbraid Elf was legal.
