tbh i would love if modern would be a cheap legacy.
Playing on cockatrice or borrowing cards legacy is by far the most fun format to me.
Obviously some people wouldn't agree with me but that's life...

The issue is Wotc made a vague comment about what they wanted Modern to be in terms of Legacy and never clearly defined what part(s) Wotc wanted emulated, leaving the player base to argue about it. Some think they have not done what Wotc promised. Others feel they are hitting it on all points, and every where in between. It goes back to everyones personal vision for the format. The format is going to be what Wotc wants and we choose to play it or not. We dont dictate what the format should be. It would be impossible for Wotc to make everyone happy and they know that.

I respect you because you understand what you want, others may not. Personally I am one of those that does not like what Legacy became. Then again I am not fond of formats dominated by one color or a handful of cards. The question is, how does Wotc keep both of us happy with Modern?
So, i know it is Modern PTQ season, but does anyone want to call out SCG for having lots of Modern videos lately, after they announced they would start to support it? It seems very coincidental that their employees are playing Modern with the expensive decks, maybe to entice people to order Modern cards from them...

HOW DARE SCG HAVE MORE MODERN RELATED CONTENT DURING MODERN SEASON AND AFTER ANNOUNCING THEY WOULD SUPPORT THE FORMAT! WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST ANNOUNCE IT AND NOT DO ANYTHING. AND THEY EVEN LET YOU ORDER THE CARDS ON THE SAME WEBSITE. THE NERVE.
You know how ridiculous that sounds right?

Well, scg wishes to sell a product, and is taking advantage of an active market and interest to do so. As much as I dislike the current magic marketplace, I cant really find fault with them for pushing their product with advertising. I have more issues with their massive control of the market, but that's just the nature of things at the moment.

More videos and articles on the format will increase awareness and public perception that it is a solid format, is fun and is here to stay. Regardless of if it is SCG doing it or not, articles about modern and videos showing modern are good for the format, period. The prices are an issue of course, and much can be done in that regard, but I don't think any of us should be upset if our favorite format is getting more exposure and bringing in new players.
Are they hoping to also sell more product with the articles and videos? Of course, they are, that's what businesses do. I don't understand the uproar, are they supposed to just sell modern singles and not post any articles or videos promoting the format? Are they supposed to host events and not adjust card prices according to demand? ....The nerve of their advertising I tell you, showing videos and promoting a format on their own website of all places....

I read one Modern article where the author was explaining how UW was the deck to play this season and he went x-3 with it at some PTQ...
/no thanks.
There is no magic deck in Modern where you can just sleeve it up and go x-0 in any tournament. Find a deck you enjoy and learn it inside out and you have a shot.

Yeah, part of the beauty of this format, if you know your deck you can do well.
Do people really want nothing but articles about tier 1/well known decks telling them to play GR monsters, mono black or mono blue...wait, wrong format...
Regardless, articles on nothing but affinity, Jund, pod or twin sounds really boring. Especially considering there are so very many options that you could do well with at an event.
SCG could ramp prices regardless of who supported Modern. They don't need to run the events to run the secondary market.
That they are supporting Modern is good for those of us that want to see the format grow - which has the knock-on effect of making prices higher regardless of whether there is price manipulation or not.
I'm not based in the US and I have to pay exorbitant fees to get the cards I want - but I have a Modern deck and a couple of shells for other decks (along with a couple for Legacy) and I'm very happy to see that someone with a commercial interest in keeping the formats those decks are designed for in the minds of everyone. We've only just started having weekly Modern FNMs (like 2/3 months ago recently) and monthly Legacy tournaments.
your all stupid if you think the format is not going to grow just cause scg is not supporting it.
I want that dank your must be smoking.
All this does is drive up prices like when they said they would keep supporting legacy. Its just a way for them to get more money in there pockets in an economy that is no way in hell recovering.
This does not help me in any way than buying cards priced higher than they should be.

Cool post, bro. We're not stupid; we can see that the format was growing before SCG decided to support it, but SCG supporting it will only help it grow more. I still see that as a good thing.
I understand the frustration with high prices. So does Wizards, and they're taking steps to address the issue. They just have to be careful, because they don't want a repeat of the Chronicles debacle...which almost killed Magic, btw. I'd rather endure high prices than have Modern or Magic in general endangered.
You have to remember that SCG does care about Wizards. Its likely the dont seperate Legacy and Modern days to keep people playing standard. If many people had the choice to play Legacy on day one, and Modern day two, standard would loose a lot of players. SCGs needs MTG to keep on going, and the best way to do that is through pack sales, best way to sell packs outside of limited, is to support standard.
Not to mention this gives all the players who dont have Legacy decks something to do on Sunday. The problems are going to start when SCG has 300-400 for Legacy on Sunday and 400-1000 for Modern. Down the road I can see SCG claiming running both on Sunday has become a logistics problem.

On the flipside, as long as Modern keeps growing, you must also be something if you DIDN'T think SCG would eventually step in and try to profit from its popularity

This is what I'm afraid of, too. I think SCG is testing the waters on Modern because Legacy growth is slowing (or will soon...we all knew the costs and simple supply of cards would create a plateau at some point). If Modern passes Legacy, so be it. SCG is a business, and they'll go with whatever makes the most sense. They don't owe Legacy anything; they promoted it to make money, and they'll lower/drop their support if they can make more money off Modern.

Indeed. The problem with your logic is that the majority of valuable cards that are good in Modern were already good for Legacy, aside from the mana base and some choice staples. That's not to say that the lands are some small thing, but the person who is already willing to cough up money for fetches, Bobs, 'Goyfs, etc. in Modern is likely to do the same in Legacy.
If Modern is more profitable, they'd certainly support it, but the majority of what makes Modern profitable already makes Legacy profitable. So they'll run some side events to squeeze a few extra bucks out of Cryptic Commands and Birthing Pods. Maybe they'll lure in some players who wouldn't normally play Legacy but can play Modern and they'll get some extra entry fees there too. Legacy won't be going anywhere though, at least not in the foreseeable future. Prices continue to go up because people continue to buy them, and SCG continues to sell out. If the demand wasn't there, then we'd see decreasing prices and lower attendance. We're seeing the exact opposite though.
Very smart business move for them to support all 3 formats though. No reason not to squeeze every penny you can out of those events. And while I agree that they will drop Legacy should it ever become unprofitable, we're so far removed from that possibility that it isn't worth discussing right now.

SCG Baltimore is this weekend. It would be interesting to see what the top 16 decklists are. I'm going to take a wild guess and say the following decks will be represented in top 16: WUR Control, GR Tron, Rock, Pod, Merfolk, Twin, Affinity, and Zoo. Don't forget about Zoo
Might be just Top 8 decklists for the Premier IQ. It's basically the same as what used to be called a "SCG Classic." Don't remember if they put up T16 or just T8 decklists for those.

I would imagine they would at the very least have the top 16 decklists like they do with the other events.
This is the page where they post their top 16 decklists.
