I'd really like to point out that wizards creates the situation where it's possible that scg can do the things they do. Regardless of what you think wizards wants out of modern the original article introducing it stated that they saw how popular legacy was and would like to have a format that capitalizes on that success without the reserved list to constrain them.
Modern now is about as expensive as legacy was when modern was announced, give or take like 10%. If it becomes significantly more expensive than it is now, then it's probably time for wizards to take action. After all wizards can't hide behind the reserved list anymore and simply ignore the issue.
The problem with this thinking is Wotc has not said they want a cheaper format. Maybe Wotc loves what is going on. We dont know.
I never said they wanted a cheaper one, I said they wanted one that captures the feel of legacy without the constraints of the reserved list. Please don't put words in my mouth.
I was not trying to put words in your mouth, thats how the comment came off to me. I am sorry if thats not what you meant.
There is no way Wotc can recapture what Legacy is without pushing the format closer to Legacy. There are always going to be those people who will be like, you think this format is great, you should have been around for Legacy.

Maybe Wizards loves making a fun format that many people aren't able to afford and really doesn't care if people can't play it? If that is what they believe, then **** them. I don't believe that, but saying that they love making the format too expensive for many people is not something that I can believe while still supporting them as a company.
Every once in a while you make comments that are worth responding to because of how wrong you are. Wotc is GROWING in popularity. Attendance figures across the board are up, sales are up. So if the game is unattainable for you, I am sorry, but it is quite attainable for the masses. Look at the big picture. I will now go back to ignoring you.
SCG is literally the only reason Legacy is a format anymore, I have no idea how this is a bad thing.
ITT: Poor people cry over SCG
See, SCG's Legacy tournaments and its pricing policies are two completely different issues. You can like SCG for thing A that they do but dislike them for some other thing, B. Some persons' dislike of B outweighs their like of A (e.g. because they don't play Legacy, or live outside the US), so there you go.
It's like person Y complaining that person X doesn't put the toilet seat down, then you say "but person X washes his hands after using the bathroom".

It is very obviously stated that the format is created to capture the popularity of Legacy without the problems of the reserved list. Even you cannot argue how clearly it is stated there.
Edit Edit: I suppose you could. But you've blatantly lied on the forum before so what's a guy gonna do?
To capture the popularity of a format, does not mean to emulate it. Hard to argue Modern isnt popular. there are tournaments breaking attendance records. Seems like Wotc has nailed it.
I have never lied in this forum, I just cant show proof because there is none. None of the results were made common knowledge to the masses. I would like an apology please.

While the majority of people might be able to afford it, many people cannot. You are saying that Wizards loves high prices, even when they don't increase the profits for Wizards, and loves it when some people cannot play the version of the game that they want to. If that is the case, then **** them. But you still haven't said why Wizards would not prefer it if everyone could play what they wanted to. I understand that they need to keep draining money from the Standard players, but saying that they love that some people cannot afford Modern is simply preposterous.

If you couldn't tell I hate greedy blue decks.
Im doubtful that wizards is overly concerned with doing things that affect the format anytime soon outside of the banlist; and even there, it not likely.
Wizards is looking at the big picture, they have to be, no one expected magic to be around for 20 years. Legacy is the "play everything weve printed' format, modern is going to be watched carefully and molded over a long period of time.
Not sure why SCG is getting people jumping down their throat. If they didn't do it, someone else would. This gives people more opportunity to get more play, more exposure, better fun, and a chance to win money. Why are people hating SCG? Because it's SCG, I guess. They aren't the only ones piloting prices, but they certainly are the most influential I'll give you that. If TCG did it, it would be the same... And IIRC, TCG tried to do this(support Modern) and it flopped.
1) I like that Modern will be getting more exposure. It is my favorite format.
2) As people have said, this will likely not help the issue with modern prices. I am glad I picked up my staples when I did, but this will also keep me further from expanding into other decks. Alas, if I want to go aggro it looks like it will be mono green infect, as Affinity will go even higher. Yay $80 Mox Opals?

I went to a modern game night on Monday at my LGS and there was 20+ people there to play. On a Monday. That can sometimes be as much as an FNM. I'd say wizards has really pushing modern in the past year. Not including Modern Masters there have been several modern playable card printed in the past year, and they even reprinted some decent staples like Scooze, Mutavault and Thoughtseize.
I like that SCG is going to be doing modern tournaments because their overall coverage and production is better and more watchable than anyone else's.

Yeah, I've got to agree, though it is probably a regional thing for Throst unfortunately.
There are now multiple shops that run modern in the greater Portland, OR area that fire off almost every week: Monday (40+ last time I went), Tuesday, Thursday (this one rarely fires), Friday and Saturday. If I wanted to and actually had the time I could play modern four, maybe five times a week now! Unfortunately, I don't have near that much free time.
Overall modern is growing in popularity, SCG must have seen the writing on the wall, and despite prices, this should be good for the overall health of the format and getting more people playing and shops hosting modern events.

I still don't see why Channelfireball didn't try to have Modern events.
I meant it barely exists in that it's only been around for what, 5 years if even?
Not that it not popular, but that it is still in its infant stages.
No matter how popular it gets in the next year, even if everyone in america is playing modern it is still a new format. Its like when legacy first started and the only decks in contention were goblins and standstill.
Compared to legacy the format is still very young and in its very developmental stages.
EDIT: I dont even remember why I was making this point, but it was obviously not well worded the first time
I'm curious as to where in CA you're at. The Monstore in Montclair, CA has a TNM for Modern which has around 18 players and a FNM which has about 25 players (and has actually declined a bit from 36+).
@fghtffyrdmns - I am jealous of you having 40+ players at your Modern FNM. We average only about 24-28 now.

I know the Santa Rosa and especially the Rohnert Park area very well. You must go to Outer Planes and Games off Mendocino Blvd. When I visited months ago, I went there for the first time in years.
Napa has other attractions, but I guess Magic is not the top of the list.
To stay on topic, I am glad that SCG is supporting Modern. Although I have rarely bought cards or sold cards to them, I appreciate the support they have for Legacy, which is now my favorite format. I do wish that there were more Opens in CA or close by though.

One of the things both modern and legacy share in common is the ability of tier two decks to do well. It is certainly true that decks can be ridiculously expensive, but compare it to the old standard formats- where you played one of say just 3 or 4 competitive decks with expensive cards like bonfire that crashed on rotation. Some maintained their value, of course, but people were priced out of the old standard formats just as easily, and those that invested often lost money upon rotation. Just check out the price of thragtusk, sublime archangel et al. The difference with modern is that you can pick up a cheap hatebear/death and taxes or martyr proc/soul sista deck and still do well in ptq events- if you get the right opponents. The reason these decks are not tier one is normally they have a bad matchup against one of the more popular decks (and often a very good one against others), whereas all the top decks have reasonable matches against most other decks. With such a diverse field you can get lucky avoid the hard matchups and find yourself top 8-ing. They are still very good decks. Hell, even a mono green stomp deck top 8'd a BOM trial. That option just did not exist in the days of caw blade standard, at least for most people. You turned up with a tier1.5/2 deck and got stomped. Its the same in legacy- scg top 8 has seen 20 mountain burn decks.
People recognise that standard is fundamentally flawed- it always ends up stale, and people become disillusioned with it. The obscene profiteering off the back of standard has largely gone- the result of the format being less popular relative to the older ones. More people are playing mtg than ever, but as a percentage the number of standard only players seems lower. It is only natural SCG follow this. Will they replace Legacy- no, never. And if the price of duals crash, I will buy the lot:). In legacy you get decks that they won't let near modern. From t0 combo to critterless strategies -I can play stax and pox in legacy- so I think legacy is pretty safe.
The problem with this thinking is Wotc has not said they want a cheaper format. Maybe Wotc loves what is going on. We dont know.

Its funny to see people want only certain parts of Legacy but totally disregard the total package. How about we let Modern be Modern and stop comparing it to other formats.

In all fairness to the 40+, it was the week prior to a PTQ, which I think brought more numbers out. It was the first time I went to this particular location, but I did hear from players that this wasn't at all uncommon to see there.
If only I had more free time to play, too many life commitments to devote much time to the game unfortunately : (
Regardless, I think SCG picking up modern will increase the overall popularity further despite what many are concerned about regarding price. Tournament support, potentially more articles and posted/live event coverage do draw people to a format. It was a ton of fun, and I hope everyone in or near major metro areas can experience great turnouts like this in the future.

I agree with this. Modern is not a cheap copy of Legacy and never will or should be. However, that isn't the issue. The problem is that we have dissenting opinions on what Modern should be like. I personally want a cheaper format with a slightly higher power-level than now and a more equal balance of archetypes. However, that is not what some other people, including you, want. So saying that we should let Modern be Modern is meaningless without us agreeing on what Modern should be like.

Premodern - Trix, RecSur, Enchantress, Reanimator, Elves https://www.facebook.com/groups/PremodernUSA/
Modern - Neobrand, Hogaak Vine, Elves
Standard - Mono Red (6-2 and 5-3 in 2 McQ)
Draft - (I wish I had more time for limited...)
Commander -
Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)I suppose that high prices, and the "exclusivity" are part of the feel of legacy just as much as the actual game. Why not port that into modern also.
