It's a good thing that I was planning to buy fetchless UR Delver today already. Will you have to also play Standard to participate or can you come just for Modern?
It's a good thing that I was planning to buy fetchless UR Delver today already. Will you have to also play Standard to participate or can you come just for Modern?
You can come just for Modern. The way it is set up is that you can do both. And if you play in Standard and make it to top 8, those matches will be played on Sunday morning, so you can still play Modern afterwards if you want to.
As others have said card spikes, and tcg player coulda did it. But I wont beat a dead horse.
I'll say is I think this will have funny reactions to the legacy die hards when they hear this news. Its not like SCG is not supporting legacy, but they did love to pump their fist that "SCG supports legacy, not modern."
It was a matter of time, business wise. A promise a greedy corporation makes (though was clear to word so they still had the option of doing modern) will only stop them from doing something that makes them money for so long.
So many people complaining that this will increase popularity and thus demand of the format so prices will increase. Talk about greed and selfishness. Don't you want the format to continue to get more popular? Of course though, you complain about SCG and not about the entity who controls the supply - WoTC! Sheesh.

The format can only get popular to a certain point before it starts being unfriendly to players with less money. Even now I was barely able to break into the format, and that's because I have a summer job, no major expenses, and already had $200 lying around that I was using to save up for fetchlands before they spiked. The format being popular is only good if it is reasonably affordably.

The format is already that expensive. This is what a non rotating format looks like without the reserved list. Wizards won't completely crash prices, but if they were going to support something without the reserved list, this is about it.
It's actually not that bad, you can be competitive in the format for about 200$. There are aggro and control options there. Combo is more expensive but whatcha going to do?
Competitive Modern isn't all that much more than competitive standard in all honesty.

Competitive Modern isn't all that much more than competitive standard in all honesty.
What competitive control decks other than Skred Red cost less than $500? They are all 2 color and involve some number of Cryptic Commands and Snapcaster Mages, which raises the price by a lot. Same goes for midrange. All of the midrange decks except for Boros involve either Cryptic Command and Snapcaster Mage or Dark Confidant and Liliana of the Veil. And all of the aggro decks except for Goblins and Monored Burn cost at least $300 because of Mutavault, Mox Opal, and Tarmogoyf/Fetchlands. Even tempo is only cheap if you take out the fetchlands and Vendilion Cliques. You are underplaying how expensive Modern is.

Well Mono-U Tron is way under $500. It obviously depends on what archetype you think it is but I would label it as a control deck of some kind.
It probably has one of the best cost to performance ratio of all decks.
Yeah I was talking about Mono U tron, it probably runs about 200$ ish on paper (some slight variations depending on sideboard) and its easily competitive enough to take to a PTQ or a local tournament. I'd call it a control deck. I actually really enjoy playing the deck despite owning cards for more expensive decks as well, I think its rewarding to play and it has game vs most of the other top decks in the format.
Aggro, you admittedly have to go more budget in your options, but you can build a zoo variant for 200$. It misses out on goyfs, but either straight GW or straight GR gets ya there.
For midrange it depends on wether you consider BW tokens a midrange deck, but the event deck actually made that deck quite affordable. I dunno what I'd call that.
You aren't going to get a super slick fully tuned machine of a deck for 200$, but you can certainly get a decent enough deck that will win you games that can be used to branch into other decks as you get more money to invest in the format.
Edit: Part of the problem is that I think people have unrealistic expectations about how expensive modern should be. For a non rotating format that gets a lot of support, I actually think its pretty reasonable right now. Obviously it could be cheaper but what do people realistically even want?
Edit: Part of the problem is that I think people have unrealistic expectations about how expensive modern should be. For a non rotating format that gets a lot of support, I actually think its pretty reasonable right now. Obviously it could be cheaper but what do people realistically even want?
Yes, there are those with unrealistic expectations of what they want cards to cost.
But there is a growing number of people who are simply sick and tired of the price spikes due to the fact that Magic is in a bubble. Expensive prices suck, but if those prices are stable, then you can save up and buy the cards. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. By the time you save up money to get cards, a price spike will have happened and you have to save money all over again. I would argue that the volatility of prices more than anything is what has greatly discouraged players from trying to enter the format because they're getting priced out faster than they can save up the money for the cards.
So many people complaining that this will increase popularity and thus demand of the format so prices will increase. Talk about greed and selfishness. Don't you want the format to continue to get more popular? Of course though, you complain about SCG and not about the entity who controls the supply - WoTC! Sheesh.
Wotc has stated many times it doesnt want anything to do with the secondary market. They are leaving that to the LGS and major online retailers. Personally I am glad they have this stance, I have seen what happens when companies try and dictate prices. Either its much worse then it is now or it kills the product.
I love the idea of a weekly event, just wish it was TCG or some other larger retailer that took it over and not SCG. SCG needs some competition to stabilize the market (from card prices to entry fees for events).
I am sure many new players will be turned off more because of the established players taking advantage more then prices or what retailer has what events. I am all for a more popular Modern. It just comes with some draw backs that could get ugly, especially for the newer players.
Edit: Part of the problem is that I think people have unrealistic expectations about how expensive modern should be. For a non rotating format that gets a lot of support, I actually think its pretty reasonable right now. Obviously it could be cheaper but what do people realistically even want?
All i have to say is when i got my set of Scalding Tarns, they were 10 bucks each. Now they're at 60 each. That's 240 for a set rather than just 40. That's a pretty absurd price jump. I could literally by 6 playsets at the old price for the cost of 1 playset now. That's insane. I think it's realistic to wanna be able to build a deck without dropping 300 dollars on just lands.
Of course i'm only using fetch lands as an example. Plenty of other cards have skyrocketed in price in a short amount of time as well.
The price of magic cards right now is just absolutely crazy.
As for SCG doing Modern, well that's cool, but i wish i could play Modern and Legacy. I'm not a Standard guy at all, and there's no way i'm giving up Legacy for Modern.

The prices being the same as when I entered the format would be a nice start, rather than being 2-3 times as much.

People want accessibility. They have been crying out for it in almost every forum. People who need cards to play in xyz format shouldn't have to buy singles that are expensive or unavailable. There should be a chance to get cards you need from packs. That doesnt mean all goyfs every set. But hardly any of these modern cards appear in packs. Whenthey do they are rridiculous 'masters' edition which costs so much and has limited printing.

How should that work?
Do you really want them to constantly reprint a card pool that is 10000 cards big and will only get bigger and bigger? Who will pay for that?
The cost of printing cards is already a concern for them. It's why they don't do double-faced cards regularly for example.

That is unrealistic. Just plain cost of living for LGS and online retailers would make the cards more expensive then the beginning of the format. Add in popularity, high level events and basic supply and demand issues, what you are asking for is quite unrealistic.
Personally I am tired of reprints as it is. I want new cards to play with. And there are players asking for more reprints on a more constant basis. Why print new cards at all when all anyone wants is the older stuff?
Edit: Part of the problem is that I think people have unrealistic expectations about how expensive modern should be. For a non rotating format that gets a lot of support, I actually think its pretty reasonable right now. Obviously it could be cheaper but what do people realistically even want?

This is definitely fair criticism that the prices are more volatile than one would ideally like, but it's not blatantly true for every card. This is sorta how magic has always been, when formats and cards are popular, the prices spike. Modern is more popular now than it has ever been. It's going to spike the price of cards.

Edit: I'm also aware that this is probably going to be a very unpopular post, but I don't care. SCG may make cards more expensive, but they also do lots of good for the magic community. Them picking up modern is a good thing, and it's actually pretty selfish of lots of people to not think of it that way.
Well, it seems a little strange to me that WoTC has official formats where most of the game pieces *needed* are almost entirely secondary market.
Legacy I get, cause the reserve list makes it impossible to directly support.
I'm also just a little curious who is actually paying these high prices for cards, I'm pretty sure that even a lot of the pro players are either sponsored, or have access to cards without owning them.

Good post, man.
Card prices is a complex issue, and one that Wizards doesn't seem to be deaf to. They're making efforts to make Modern more accessible, and I think we'll see more (and stronger) efforts down the road. They were caught off-guard by the Modern explosion, too, and the last thing they want is a format that's too expensive for people to enter. They're still making money off of Modern (unlike Legacy), so they're going to support it. Prices are kind of ridiculous right now. Be patient. Neither Wizards not Star City can snap their fingers and drop prices. The have to carefully make adjustments without toppling the whole house of cards (get it? ;))
On topic, I'm happy Star City is finally running Modern. I hate the current gen Standard environment, and I hate Legacy period. Now I have to a reason to show up at an SCG Open.
