Starcity Games is going to support Modern. Although SCG hosted GP Richmond, this is something different that was just announced on stream of SCG Invitational: Columbus. Starting with SCG Open: Baltimore on July 19, on Saturday of each Open will have Standard swiss rounds, and Sunday will have Standard top 8, Legacy Open, and Modern IQ. This is actually pretty big news, cause currently, there are not really that many large, consistent paper Modern events besides the Modern Grand Prix every couple of months. Anyone else excited about the news?
Well that is great. It was only a matter of time until SCG would embrace Modern since its the no.2 format so its nice to see that the time has come.
Right now analyzing the meta is tough since they are not that many Modern events on paper which leaves MTGO as the place that gives the most data. Standard and Legacy on the other hand get weekly tournaments too which makes that much easier.
While I expected it to happen eventually, it only makes me fear even higher card prices and the potential for SCG to eventually replace Legacy with Modern.

I will always firmly stand by the belief that Magic is a game first and a collectable second.
Also, it sucks to have events overlap like that if people play multiple formats. I wonder if after testing the waters SCG may consider turning their open events into a three day ordeal.

Under the new schedule, you can play Standard and Modern, or Standard and Legacy, just not Modern and Legacy.

I know, that was my complaint. What if you want to play Modern and Legacy? Nope, just denied.

I've been wrong about it before, but i don't actually think the market can handle many more absurd price jumps. It's already pretty bursting and if this means that there may be less support of legacy, I imagine the demand of cards for legacy will go down which may mean cards that see heavy play in both formats will go down slightly.
It's more likely small things that see play in modern but no where else jump again, like serum visions, tron lands, wall of omens, etc.

Oh this is awesome. When I am in the US I don't normally look to see if there is an open closeby because I don't really enjoy Standard and my Legacy deck is very budget. This will definitely motivate me to go.
This is great, if you already have decks together ready for Modern. Trying to get in? Barrier to entry just got higher. I'm not overly happy about this.
Well, while I'm excited that I can play my tier 1.5 Modern deck a bit more, it means that I certainly won't ever be building that tier 1 deck I wanted to make. Prices are gonna spike a fair amount now, not sure by how much though. I do now have more incentive to attend the SCG Open in my area in a few months.

Upset its SCG that did this. Wish it was another card dealer/event T.O. that jumped on this. But it should be good for the format.
You know if TCG Player as a conglomerate can't do it, why not CFB, Coolstuff or even CFG. I was just thinking about how cool a limited saturday, modern sunday would be. Of course nobody can get their hands on enough product for that kind of series.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.

I always figured it was a logistics thing.
CFB has the west coast, SCG has the east...
I think what'd be nice is if we (as players) could get some sort of home-grown Bazaar Of Moxen styled thing going on to rig up events instead of having to rely on corporate entities to do the work for us.

This might be part of the push to see that: if given the chance, would some of the current legacy regulars rather play modern? This type of data would play directly into a decision to move toward a slow replacement of legacy events altogether over time (after the last bit of meat has been stripped off of legacy's carcass).
I personally think this is really awesome, I don't play standard or legacy and they don't have modern gp's in my area, but scg has come here 3 times in the past two years (4 times in novemeber I believe), so this is all-upside for me. About time modern got as much spotlight as legacy, hopefully they will drop legacy entirely and just have modern on sunday.

If MTG is a part of your life, the formats are like relationships:
Standard/Block = The on-again, off-again holiday fling
Modern/Vintage/Legacy = Stable, homely. A ***** after absence/misreading
Limited/Sealed = Heart breaking free spirit
Commander/Cube = Agreeable, needy and expensive
Pauper/Peasant = Sweet, kind, practical, but shy and boring

I would say its a trust issue. The player base trusts the big corporate for the most part. Not so sure how well it would go with some random player(s) running an event like this.
I just started playing with a group of guys that are really new to magic right now. I'm going to advise them to grab some shocks while they can. I know that people have been saying that shocks are likely the best pick up for the last few months but this SCG announcement might accelerate the price climb - I won't be able to stand the crying about not being able to get into the format because of 20$ shock lands compounded by $$/$$$ fetches. Keeping new players in the game is important - giving some of our standard only friends some insight on evolving modern issues will be key to having people to play with tomorrow. Shocks might be time sensitive. Other staples are likely to climb but you just can't even think about playing the game without some semblance of an adequate land base. Shocks will likely take another bump in price when fetches are reprinted in a few years.

I really wish people would stop supporting them so that they'd die the miserable economic death they deserve.

Modern is a chance Channelfireball/TCG to kick it up to the next level. It doesn't have to be weekly. Even twice a month would suffice.
Maybe make them super ptqs like the last one they had video coverage of.
