It's also Wotc being involved in the secondary market.
The secondary market is just that- secondary. It is when product that is no longer factory sealed is sold- often in a piecemeal fashion. Wizards selling factory sealed product is the primary market by definition.
If they make a tarmogoyf pack that contains 1 card which is tarmogoyf and sell it around market price of a tarmogoyf as a sealed product is that not the same as selling singles? (It is)
If they keep the price but make it a deck is that different from the above scenario (you know event decks ect..)? (no)
If they instead take those cards from the deck and separate them into 5 packs that are 1/5th the price of the deck is the scenario now different? (I terms of effect on the secondary market and Wotc making money off it there is no difference)
There is little difference between Wotc selling reprinted singles to stores and wotc reprinting singles packaging them and then selling them to stores except the fact that many players would perceive it differently because they think arbitrary definitions of "sealed product" is means it can't be targeted at the secondary market.
A 40 dollar mythic rare would constitute a must have 4 of that goes in many decks.
Stats About Mythics
-Mythics are on average 40% rarer than pre-mythic rares
(old blocks about 200 rares, Mythic blocks 35+ mythics)
-They are printing more new cards a year not less
(about 665 now vs. 630 in most pre-mythic block)
-To drop the value of a rare by $1 a mythic must go up $2
-In a 3 year time span deck prices doubled. I am petitioning for the removal of mythic rarity. Sig this to join the cause.
If that's the way you see it then everything Wizards makes is somehow involved in the secondary market. Printing Nahiri in SoI impacts the secondary market- both because how long they print the product impacts the price, and due to the way the meta game shifts to adapt. If you want to define it that broadly then it sort of loses meaning.
Just a quick heads up - if you don't own Kolaghan's Commands they will be the perfect card to pick up at rotation. They're already dropping to their all time low ($7 currently TCG low) and should continue to fall. This IS a card that might one day be 15-20 because of modern demand and it's difficulty to reprint. DON'T SLEEP.
Holy crap, $7??? I remember when they were up to $20!
Edit: looks like the $7 listing is with 2.99 shipping. Average is still $10-12. Will drop more closer to/after rotation.
Bingo. It's going to keep dropping and once it bottoms it WILL rise again. Buy buy buy when that happens.
What do you guys think the rock bottom will be on this card, $5?
Also, it strikes me as similar to abrupt decay and maelstrom pulse in that it will settle back up around 10-15. Perhaps I'm wrong about that though?
It might get that low, but I don't think so. It is played in Jund, which is one of the more consistent decks. And I mean that in terms of how often it shows up in tournaments regardless of the meta. It may not always be Tier 1 depending on how the meta shifts, but I think it will always have a presence. The fact that Grixis plays it should also keep it afloat.
My thought is that if it ever hits $7 (TCG Mid is $15 with a couple around $10 with shipping) that it would be the best time to pick them up. They may go lower, but I wouldn't risk them jumping back up just to save a dollar or two at that point.
I saw a Chinese-S playset by 100.00€/25.00€ each and regular playsets are like 90-100 from diferents vendors
I was specting for a reprint, by it seems it will be in MM3

the card itself really isn't worth the card board its printed on...does it serve a purpose? Sure its a blue 1 drop that might not be a 1/1. I would not put it in a list and expect to win a PTQ or GP though.

Impressive, there is zero in that post that is actually true.
1) Magic's growth is consistent, and is still the number one CCG on the planet by sales and popularity. Pokemon is 2, YGO is 3, Force of Will is 4th.
2) Given a choice of all candidates, only 12% of voting Americans support Trump. Only 21% support Clinton. That means 67% of voting Americans support neither. And that's the US, let alone the world.

You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.

The current death of MTG is hard to articulate, but it's happening. I can see it in the attitude at the stores, the people who play it. Truth is, most people are <bad> and not all opinions are equal, and I think it is still early enough that most people can not see it. But it will become more evident in time, and perhaps then you may happen to think back to this post in a few years. People just are not excited about the game, the cards and decks for standard are just not as fun, and people are priced out of modern and with so few new good cards coming into it, it is growing stale. They think banning reasonable decks like Twin will solve this, but that's absurd and they are crazy. Ive been playing this game from its inception, and I can say that Magic has been in a slow death after RtR. It'll be a long death, and it wont ever vanish entirely(it'll likely end up like pokemon) IMO. But this wildly successful game is not going to be around in anything like it's current state in 10 years, if at all. Agree or not, it's up to you and this is a bold claim. But it's obvious to me, and I did several MTG tournies a week of all formats for years, and I travel around. Some stores are not hit as much by Wizards ******* up the game as others, but as a whole, compared to the last several years, it's very evident that this game is tanking now. The reason is the absurd prices, to many worthless cards in packs/standard that really don't allow for much competitive brewing, and eternal formats being a huge 'investment'. That trifecta is what is going to kill the game, coupled with Wizards stupidity in how they run this company.

You haven't made a single good point, you've conjectured a bunch based on some anecdotal evidence - NONE of that carries any actual weight in an argument. It's clear to me that you don't know anything about game design (you cite 'bad cards' as a reason why the game is dying which is one of the worst arguments I've ever heard), you're incorrect about peak popularity points (Khans sold much more than any other magic set in history and it came AFTER RTR), and you're wrong in your overall critical analysis of TWO formats as Standard is VERY highly rated currently (it's a brewers paradise with cards like Brain in a Jar and Pyromancer's Goggles have decks built around them) and modern is as diverse and non stale as it's ever been. Pros who've been vocal about their HATRED of modern (PVDDR) are even writing articles singing it's praises lately. That link refers to a poll of 1,000 people...far from a representative sample of eligible American voters. Getting back on track, it appears that you've confused fact with opinion. Like the poster above mentioned, the game is bigger now than ever and it continues to attract new and returning players despite the "absurd prices and worthless cards". I stopped playing around Mirrodin and returned to the game around Theros and the game is certainly more widespread now than back then. I agree that WOTC can make some questionable decisions and also that the game has gotten pricier, but why wouldn't it when players are jumping at the chance to buy a $10+ booster pack of EM? No game can last forever, but it sure as hell doesn't look like Magic is going anywhere anytime soon.

A new rule needs to be enforced on this forum. You should only be able to speak for yourself. This is where all the arguments actually start when one person has a certain perception of a subject, and they think they are speaking for a whole group, but really its just a projection of their opinion on that subject. If people could just speak for themselves and stop hiding in a group of like mind others, that would be great.
Now about modern prices, since Goblin Guides are not getting reprinted, does anyone see a spike for this card over the horizon? I have a friend who thinks they might be included in conspiracy due to a similarity between the parley mechanic, and GG's top deck land draw back. Any thoughts?
I think Kologahans is a good mind term investment, but I think MTG is no longer a good long term investment with how Wizards is running it.
But if you want to play a better, much cheaper game, just place Force of Will, hahaha. MTG is such a money pit for a game with such a terribly designed power level(Most of the cards are un playable crap), and terrible job keeping the prices down so you can brew often. Force of will is like MTG, but super cheap, very well designed cards, a better designed game(Think MTG without the Mana screw and many more combat and card options)and you get a commander that's a lot more interesting then what EDH ham-fistedly tries to do
I think MTG's days of being a solid investment are numbered IMO, they are treating it like an investment 1st and game 2nd when it comes to reprints, and $1,000+ decks combined with their inability to print many good/fun* cards in a set will kill this game.
MTG's success comes from being a fun and accessible game 1st, not an investment(Unless they really wants Modern to be the next legacy). Until MTG learns that, i'll be saving a lot more money, heh

I completely disagree with Force of Will being a better game. Outside of it's obvious M:tG clone status, the game is not better designed nor is it more fun to play. The power level on cards is way too high, games are way too back and forth in the sense that you can have someone on the ropes and they can draw 1 card and stabilize because all the cards are so powerful. Games either end quickly or drag out for 45 minutes. It is a 2nd rate magic experience

I was expecting more bites on this troll post too, 4/10, which I think makes it all the more amusing.
Speaking of price spikes and back on topic, Cavern of Souls looks to be back on the rise. There were a lot to be had a few weeks ago in the $30-40 range, but you'll now be hard pressed to find any under $40 online in good condition.
Also, Eldrazi is back on the rise. I actually think Thought Knot and Reality Smasher at the least are good long term investments. Thought knot ought to be a $15-$20 card in my opinion a few years down the line once it is out of print. It's quite good.

My thought is that if it ever hits $7 (TCG Mid is $15 with a couple around $10 with shipping) that it would be the best time to pick them up. They may go lower, but I wouldn't risk them jumping back up just to save a dollar or two at that point.
I saw a Chinese-S playset by 100.00€/25.00€ each and regular playsets are like 90-100 from diferents vendors
I was specting for a reprint, by it seems it will be in MM3

I advocate for the elimination of the combo archetype in Modern. I believe it is degenerate and unfun by its very nature and will always limit design space and cause unnecessary bans.

"I hope to have such a death... lying in triumph atop the broken bodies of those who slew me..."
Please don't post on this board anymore.
Not really, they didn't change the price of SoI booster packs based on what cards are in the set.

Ironic, I think that is closer to the mark for your own post instead

The game is currently at it's all time high popularity so your entire premise is completely incorrect. We're here to talk about prices, not why you feel the game is going to die. Please stop posting.
The two are very linked(lol..?). It's absurd how I have to type this...
MTG is going to be a bad investment long term, and a lot of people are going to loose a lot. This forums activity may even be an indication of that..
Also, way to dodge how I pointed out that you where incorrect. Why is it so hard for people to see the obvious? It's mind blowing, they just dodge and see things how they want to so easily

You are factually wrong about every thing you've said that isn't your personal experience (which again, means nothing).
Please, stop posting.
Link to Discord server where anybody from MTGS can keep up with thread topics while everything is being sorted out with the new site.
Ive seen stores stop running events due to lack of sign ups, I talk to MTG players at tournies several times a week, at several diferent shops, and the opinions all around are getting much worse.
Those are facts man... You dont know where I get my info, didnt ask how I got there, and just jumped to a favorable conclusion for you. If I where to tell you how you are acting, I'd get a flame warning, hahah. It would not be pretty

Now about modern prices, since Goblin Guides are not getting reprinted, does anyone see a spike for this card over the horizon? I have a friend who thinks they might be included in conspiracy due to a similarity between the parley mechanic, and GG's top deck land draw back. Any thoughts?
