How do people feel about Liliana of the Veil? Thinking of getting some soon. I'm willing to wait until after EM releases, but I don't want to get caught by a spike in the event she's not there and the price goes up further. Does anyone think the price is being somewhat suppressed right now by reprint speculation?
But you literally just ignored everything I said - if the game was a trainwreck and the model didn't work then we wouldn't have RISING attendance, interest, and extreme longevity. I'm in no way calling this model perfect and I DO want there to be more reprints, but your rhetoric has the game in dire straits and it simply isn't the case. Statements like this : "Wizards just doesn't like supporting constructed." are so thoroughly misguided - of COURSE they want to support constructed. They design with as many constructed formats in mind as they do draft AND they understand that what keeps people coming back is those chase rares and the fun they have in various constructed formats. You're applying your narrative to Wizard's business philosophy now and it's completely nonsensical. So, if Wizards had no interest in supporting constructed formats, why would they design any cards with Standard play in mind? Why would they have a pro tour? Why would they sanction FNMs (their best way of getting newer players involved with the game) for anything other than limited?
100% of design and 90% of development is focused on limited the other 10% of development is focused on Standard. They more or less ignore Modern and Legacy on the theory that they'll just ban cards if they're problematic. There is very little building for multiple constructed formats in mind. They build with Standard in mind, and even that they mostly ignore.
I think WOTC wants eternal/non-rotating formats to be cost prohibitive, since if the barrier to entry is really high, it might get people to play Standard which helps WOTC sell more booster packs. Like Modern is a really popular format, but WOTC is a business and it is in their best interest to sell the new set and reprinting a whole bunch of stuff at once wastes their potential reprint equity when they can slowly put those cards into Standard legal sets.

There's a difference between "design for" and "test for." WOTC doesn't test for Modern in development. But they do design for Modern, Legacy, and EDH in standard sets. There are many development articles talking about a card or two a set for other formats.
I've been playing Modern for a few years, and I've never been more worried about the format than now. I've slowly sold off cards I'm not using right now and eventually I plan to have my completed decks only. I doubt I'd want to buy in to Modern at current prices.
I don't want to be caught having cards not in my decks in case prices start to come down, and realistically it's going to happen at some point. The question is when.
If Modern's popularity does start to come down, I'm not going to play Standard or Limited instead. I'll simply play less Modern.
I doubt it. I think that prices might not skyrocket around PT time, but I very much doubt taking Modern out of the PT rotation will cause a crash in prices. I think if the cards you're selling are cards you may want in the future, you'll be kicking yourself.
If the Modern community was going to cash out of the format you'd have already started to see the prices fall. We may not have the huge uptick in demand that comes along with pros finding new decks/techs, but things should simply plateau where they are now instead.

It's pulled from two quotes, the first from Mark Rosewater who has said that close to 100% of the time a set is in design the focus is on limited, there is very little thought to other formats. The second part comes from a video with Adam Prosak (I forget which video sadly, it was one of the pre expansion ones they show at a PT) who said 90% of their focus in development is on draft with the rest going to Standard.
Is now the time to pick up Collected Company? Not planning on building the deck just yet but I might want to in the future. Will it get cheaper near rotation?

If you can wait, don't buy it now. Company has a lot of stock out there, and the only reason it's so high now is its Standard success. It will definitely drop after the rotation, even if that drop won't be massive. Modern demand will buoy it to some extent, but closer to the $10-$15 range and not the current $25 mark.

It's at $21.00+ solid right now. If you can find the Magic Origins Clash pack for MSRP ($30) you can snag a dromoka's command ($3.50) and windswept heath ($11.00) and a bunch of trade fodder foils like Siege Rhino + the Company. Seems pretty good. My LGS still has a bunch rotting on the shelf for $28.00 ea

Do you know how much for the Siege Rhino now, after the rotation?
It is just $2.00...
Be a smart Modern player, the first thing you need to do is NOT to buy Standard staples during Standard season.

I spent more than 40 USD for 2 playsets last year. For me it is $5.0.
If I do not play Standard, I can just wait until now and get the playset for less than 10 USD...
Anyway, this is just an example to consider buying Collected Company or not, at the moment.
That's just including the time it spiked, even from mtggoldfish's price data you can see the average median price was approximately $4 through it's life in standard. Generally speaking it was pretty easy to find for 2-3$. However getting back to the original point Collected Company is not the best pickup at it's current price. It is a defining card in multiple standard decks and as such will drop upon rotation. However the card is also the backbone of a tier one popular Modern deck, and as such I don't expect the card to drop as some may hope. Their will certainly be a nice window to pick them up quite cheap, and i can certainly seeing it come back to the $25 range in the future.

So it will drop more than the fetchlands did? Seems weird that anyone would want to sell it off seeing as it sees play in Modern.
There are plenty of people that sell their rotating cards that see play in Modern so that they can fund the new Standard. Sure bets (like the fetches) may get held on to, but if a player only plays Standard and does not want to spend their time holding watching the market for the best time then they have no reason to hold on to rotating cards. Sure, Modern has made the churn somewhat less severe, but it still happens plenty.

No fetchland has seen a drop as a result of rotation yet. Pretty much all of them spiked up with the BFZ rotation, and have remained relatively flat afterwards. There is no indication they will go more than 1-2$ lower than they are now, and all of them are currently higher than they were pre-BFZ. So either people are *not* selling them, or demand is keeping up with supply.

Agreed. Better to wait after the rotation when price will be lower. It won't go bellow 10$ but it will certainly drop.

On mtgsalvation people don't want to discuss ideas, so I give people something else to discuss: my controversial opinions.

Yea, that's what I was saying. I think in this case there is increasing demand from retailer buylists because they have seen such reliable growth with them. That is just smart business. They know that players will pay a lot for fetches because the player base has constantly reinforced that belief.

Well I'm personally sitting on 3 playsets each of Flooded Strand and Polluted delta, and 1 playset of every other fetch except Verdant Catacombs and Misty Rainforest. They have nowhere to go but up, and right around DTK was the perfect time to buy in. Right now is not terrible either though... Strands are down to ~$15 and Delta is down to about ~$17.

Right. My original point was that looking to Fetches as an indicator of what other cards will do after rotation will lead to disappointment. Fetches (and to an extent any decent in Modern dual land) hold and gain value independent of their legality in Standard. Other cards, like Collected Company, will see a more dramatic price drop post rotation. CC is probably more resistant to price drop than Rhino because mountains of SR were opened and were never really expensive to acquire for any period of time.
I cant pull up the transaction so I can't be sure, but I think I paid $320 for a full set of Khans fetches when they first came out. Could have gotten them cheaper if I wanted to hassle with TCG or Ebay, but I am not keen on them for various reasons, but the primary reason was I was using store credit. As it stands now you are looking at about the same price for them, and since demand is only going to grow the price is only going to go up. I have no interest in getting extra play sets to sell later, but it is not a unwise practice.
I believe that someone posted about it being very strong in legacy miracles.
It also say play in several lists during the last scg open (uwr)
Hoogland has also been playing Jeskai control matches with it that end in a nahiri/emrakul ultimate, AND in Kiki-Chord - it's pretty sweet. Also, if you're ever confused about why an current standard Mythic is spiking.. you should probably look at standard first.
