It's like investing in individual stocks. You have to beat the market to win and you have to be arrogant or stupid to think you can beat the market.
This is true, it's a big gamble and not a surefire thing. I've only done it once recently, bought a voice of resurgence at $20 per card, sold them later at $50 per card and then re-bought them after the drop at around $20 per card again. That is the exception however and not the norm by any means.
If you're looking for a consistent return (though at a slower rate) the thing to do is buy up modern/legacy staples if they happen to be rotating out of standard when the players are unloading them for cheap or when they see a reprint in something like modern masters, the upcoming eternal masters or any other special set. Prices tend to take a significant dip during this time and then after they are all gone/most are off the market they creep back up again due to price memory. I'm sure this is common knowledge to most here, but it's what I've done over the years to have a bit of extra spending money or trade fodder to build my collection without buying everything outright as I need it and figured I'd throw it out there for anyone newer to the game.
I need a 4th Thoughtseize (Preferably Theros art, as it's cheaper, and my other 3 are all Theros) and was wondering if there was any reason to wait on picking it up. I know it's unlikely to be reprinted anytime soon, so Ifeel like all it can do is go up, and I waited around too long to pick one up while they were under $20. Any reason to wait, or should I just pick it up now?

There are plenty of $13-$15 copies of Thoughtseize on TCGPlayer right now - if you need to get one now is the best time.
As Palefang (a french deckbuilder) said on another forum : Thing in ice looks pretty solid in UnStorm. It's an alternative kill, an early wall against aggro decks, it's in the deck main colors and it can often be flipped by turn 3.
Do you think he is right ? And if he is, do you think its price can go up ?
Almost impossible. It's a rare from what could be the most opened set in history. Even if storm became the top deck in Modern, Legacy, and vintage I can't see this going up above $20. If you want to bet on this card in storm buy other storm pieces.

Why would it be the most opened set in history? Is that just the trend with every new expansion? Doesn't seem like there are any chase cards.

It happens with almost every new set and this set specifically is a return to a VERY popular plane. Also, we've only seen 1/6 of the total cards in the block, so of course we haven't seen all (any?) of the chase cards yet.
Thought-Knot is a multi-format staple that was more played than Lightning Bolt and you could always buy him for $11. There's no way in hell Thing hits $20. There's just too much of the set being opened these days.

That's what I've been saying. He might be super popular in standard and have a price around 8-10 usd, but I wouldn't pay out the nose for a preorder right now. The cards I'd pre-order are things flying under the radar like Bygone Bishop, Declaration in stone, etc.
I'm not falling for undergrowth champion 2.0 either with Relentless Dead either. Avacyn will keep her price because she is an iconic angel and a heck of a lot more playable than her previous forms, but a zombie reanimator at 2 cmc? Alone it doesn't make modern zombies any more competitive and there's a ton of graveyard hate right now in modern, leaving it strictly up to standard to hold it's price. If we get a lot of good ETB zombies I might combo him with Liliana, heretical Healer and double sacrifice someone with a Fleshbag marauder or other card, though.

Zombies is a very popular tribal deck for casual players, in addition to being a good zombie two-drop: Something Zombies is seriously lacking. I think this card alone puts Zombies into viable terratory.
Although I am biased, since I already think Zombies is viable As seen here.

Funny you say that, because Seth Manfield over on tcgplayer.com said the exact opposite in an article on preparing for a ban in Modern, declaring of Jason Chung's Dredge:

emphasis on "at the moment." That means that people aren't currently playing much grave hate, so it's a good metagame choice to have a graveyard deck. But that doesn't mean the Modern cardpool lacks the appropriate amount of hate.
Is Jace, Vryn's Prodigy just going to keep going up? Or will it settle around the same price as Jace the Mind Sculptor?
He's one of those cards that might see a reprint in a duel deck due to the set he was opened in being underwhelming, among other factors. His price isn't going to keep going up as standard is really the major place he is played the most. Modern and Legacy do have a few decks that use him, but otherwise he is no snapcaster mage. Right now his price may go up due to madness being in standard, which is going to make playing madness in standard insanely expensive.

Personally I love the idea of having a supplemental reprint for him because he really is quite useful, and may prove to be a good budget option for snapcaster mage if his price gets low enough. Snap still serves a different purpose, but having anything that plays spells from a graveyard, even at sorcery speed, would be good.

In the decks where he's good then he's often better than Snapcaster so I don't really buy comparisons about him just being a replacement (especially as he's more expensive!!).

JVP is only that expensive because it's ubiquitous in Standard. As soon as it rotates out, its price has to drop, because the demand for that card in nonrotating formats is significantly lower than the demand for Snapcaster Mage.
Playing millions of cards every turn... Slowly and systematically obliterating any chance my opponent has of winning... Clicking the multitude of locking mechanisms into place... Not even trying to win myself until turn 10+ once I have nigh absolute control... Watching my opponent desperately trying to navigate the labyrinthine prison that I've constructed... Seeing the light of hope fade and ultimately extinguished in an excruciatingly slow manner... THAT'S fun Magic.
We have 2-3 users that are dramatically making this thread incomprehensible and non-productive for anyone else to possibly join in the discussion. This needs to change.
Every time I see [ktkenshinx] post in here, I get the impression of a stern dad walking in on a bunch of kids trying to do something dumb and just shaking his head in disappointment.
Near Mint: The same as Slightly Played, but we threw some Altoids in the box we stored it in to cover up the scent of dead mice. Slightly Played: The base condition for all MTG cards. This card looks OK, but there’s one minor annoying ding in it that will always irritate and distract you whenever you draw it. Moderately Played: This card looks like it survived the Tet Offensive tucked inside the waistband of GI underwear. It may smell like it, too. Heavily Played: This card looks like the remains of Mohammed Atta’s passport after 9/11. It may be playable if you double-sleeve it to stop the chunks from falling out. The condition formerly known as "Washing Machine Grade" Damaged: This card is the unfortunate victim of a Mirrorweave/March of the Machines/Chaos Confetti/Mindslaver combo.
[M]aking counterfeit cards is the absolute height of dishonesty. Ask yourself this question: Since most people...are totally cool with the use of proxies...what purpose do [high] quality counterfeit cards serve?

I think if JVP got reprinted in a Duel Deck, a lot of vendors would mark up the price from MSRP and it will probably get scooped up immediately by the first person who walks into the LGS. I don't think a reprint in a duel deck would solve the card availability problem on JVP.

There is a difference between something like Snapcaster being expensive and JVP being expensive. The former is due to age and multi-format playability, JVP is due to being in an otherwise lackluster set that is still in standard but is required in every blue standard deck. Not saying it will happen, but JVP is driven by standard. They would make major bank on a standard card off a Dual deck.

exactly. Right now, people aren't sideboarding for grave strategies so it's a good time to play one. But there's still plenty of grave hate in the format to choose from if you decide to dedicate sb slots.
