Wotc may have screwed up making the format rotate out faster
And while khans was massive, I do think reprinting the fetchlands hurt them. I won't be shocked if they hold off on reprinting the enemy fetchlands as a way to hold modern hostage until standard gets back on its feet
There's no reason jeskai black should have been the same price as an affinity deck
They reprinted the Fetchlands because we demanded them for so long. Wizards is caught between wanting to reprint powerful staples in standard to readily increase the supply of those staples for other formats, but those staples are so powerful that they can warp the whole standard environment (Thoughtseize!).
At the same time, if Wizards only focuses on trying to create enviornments that focus on older cards everyone wants, it detracts from any new cards. I don't want just a rotating set of cards I've already seen before, I want them to push new boundaries in different ways.
Lastly - nothing 'should' cost something. EVERYONE'S acceptable price point is different. Every player who played through Khan's block AND intended to be competitive going forward damn well knew that they should be getting a full set of fetches when they 10 bucks each - if someone neglected to do that and just kept buying boosters? Boo-hoo. Don't play competitively then. Being dedicated enough to acquire the pieces of a deck that you need to compete is part of the aspect of competition in magic, just like it is in any other competitive hobby that asks something 'more' of the competitive subset of the group. Nobody is winning any bike races with a bike that costs less than 2k. Period. That there are even OPTIONS for which players can be competitive on a budget is HUGE - Lantern before it spiked, Burn to a large degree, Eldrazi if you were reading the tea leaves, etc. etc. etc.
ANY pricepoint that is 'set' as the modern entry point (however impossible this is to achieve) is completely arbitrary and many people are going to be left out, no matter where it is. You could give all of the cards away and people would still say something to the effect of 'Well I don't have as much time as the pros have, so what, am I just not supposed to be competitive if I don't dedicate my life to the game? Try hards."
Many of those moving to modern may be in the situation I was (except I was playing Modern previously) in, they'd bought a bunch of BFZ, and then looked, and saw this new Modern deck they already had all the pieces for.
I saw the deck, and I said to myself, 'I already have this deck in my trade binder!
The only cards I had to buy were 4 Mire's Toll (dime apiece) and 3 Tormod's Crypt (quarter each)
I did buy some Urborgs and Ghost Quarter specifically for the deck, as I am tired of switching lands between decks.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who made the deck since they already had the pieces. Talk about a perfect way to walk into Standard!
Now I have 4 Modern decks. As these Eldrazi players meet the other deck types, we'll see more and more branch into the colors that they prefer, and slowly piece together the deck they feel at home in.
As for the prices, mana bases have always been expensive in this game (the player base has been complaining about this forever).
True, but they are more expensive in Standard than they've been for years, possibly ever.
Not really the fault of the fetchlands, though, it's the fault of putting them with the tangolands. Manabases were expensive, but not more so than usual before the tangolands came into play.
yeah that only made a pretty big issue because now every deck runs so many duals and fetches. Maybe they're just trying to see what they could push with 18 month rotations rather than 24
Some UB Eldrazi builds do but I would not expect that to stay relevant as most people aren't going to be using it after OGW.
These Eldrazi pieces continue to increase in price. Eye of Ugin is now $30 and Temple is anywhere from $5-10 on TCG! Urborg has been slowly on the uptick as well for around $10.
The price of Khans fetchlands wasn't outlandish by Standard… standards, until BFZ dropped. Landfall + Tangolands made them spike, which they're slowly dropping from now. Before that point, I don't think the cost of Standard manabase was much different than what it was back when I was playing Standard in from Zendikar/Scars to Innistrad/Return.
Now that we are entering modern season I think Khan fetches will spike again. With unfriendly fetches like Scalding Tarn rising a lot of people will turn to Khan fetches as replacements.

I dunno, they have been fairly stable for a while. Each one besides Heath have been around $20 pretty consistently.

They dipped significantly from KTK through DTK and didn't start creeping up until around when MM15 was launched. Then they all spiked when BFZ launched, even Windswept Heath.
True, but at this point it's probably the cheapest they are going to be for a while. I only see them going up with how widely they are used in other formats; it is only a matter of time.

I wouldn't say UB and UBC builds will necessarily be irrelevant after OGW comes out. There are some people who are really banking on the new midrange tempo style Eldrazi decks being the defining build, but I think it is way too early to say that.
That said, I have tested a couple of UB builds and I am not really convinced that Delay is more than "cute" in them. I acutally have a soft spot for Delay in general, but even if UB becomes an important deck, I'm not sure that Delay will have much of a home in it.
I don't think fetches will go too much higher - everyone swore up and down that Thoughtseize wouldn't budge at rotation because of it's eternal format prevalence but down it went, not much but enough. There are plenty of people who do not care about modern or legacy and many of these people have full playsets of the fetches and will want to play when standard rotates - those cards are a pretty easy way to keep current in standard through a rotation.

It's interesting, prices don't seem to change slowly.
It feels like I woke up one day and zendikar fetches were $50+ instead of $10
Like inquisition now, what happened, it doubled overnight?
So do I preorder the new eldrazi or try to get them on release date?
The only one I think maybe you should pre-order is the Reality Smasher because it could end up in a couple different Standard deck styles, and it is seems unlikely that it will end up selling for less than the $5 pre-order price. All of the popular choices (that are not Kozilek) are rare, so they will all be opened plenty a week or two after they are releases, and the ones that turn out to not me as good as people thought will be known. That's why I think the card with the broadest application will be the one most likely to be more expensive later. 2-3 others might turn out to be chase, but it is still up in the air which ones. At the OLGS I watch both Matter Reshaper and Thought-Knot Seer have come down $2-$3 since the weekend. There are also several rare/mythic cards that people are excited about so that will spread value out more.

The Zendikar fetches have certainly been relatively gradual changers. Verdant Catacombs had a steeper change from January to April in 2014, but the only real spike it had was in August after we knew for sure that they would not be in BFZ. Misty Rainforest is more peaky, but it's peaks since March 2014 have all been short lived. I think they spend much more time gradually changing than peaking.
Correction, I said that they came down by $2-$3. Over the weekend the shop I watch had them both at $9.95, and today TKS is $6.95 and MR is $7.10. That could mean that they are good buys because they went down, or it could mean that they are not likely to be big growers because interest has lagged.
Eldrazi Mimic could be a good pick up- I have seen a lot of Modern lists that care about curving out threats run Mimic as a four-of. It is only sitting at $1.25 pre-order so it would be hard to go wrong. In contrast Warping Wail (uncommon) is sitting at $1.95. Now, there is a lot of very certain interest in WW, but it is also going to opened a ton.

Where's this? I'm still seeing ~$6-$7 everywhere I'm looking.
Also I'd point out that if Eldrazi Aggro ends up being a thing, Eldrazi Mimic will be one of the most important pieces, and it's $1.00-1.50.
