Someone claimed UMA was printed in Japan. Not sure if that's legit. Iconic and M25 are thinner, but I don't believe Ixalan levels of bad, I've got some Field of Ruin that feel like paper, even sleeved.
yeah i saw the rumors about it being printed in japan as well. after looking for a bit i couldnt find any official confirmation. it stands to reason though since the product was only in EN/JP. i still have an unopened blisterpack around, and on the back it says 'Made in Japan'. dont have any other packaging around to check if that is different.

I dont imagine the packaging itself is Made in Japan so thats probably a great sign. I dont like the set symbol for UMA (yes..I'm mental about some things) so I havent picked any up! lol

Whoa, that's good discovery. So it's possible that the cards were indeed printed in Japan.
oh my word I just saw the price of Surgical Extraction. I've had my playset for years now so hadn't paid much attention. $55 for that card is ridiculous.
EDIT: That's the CardKingdom price shown on mtgtop8. I failed to look one line down at the TCGPlayer price of $43. Still insane, though.
Looks like Scryb Ranger has already started to rise. I guess those who want to try it out in Vannifar decks better get some now.
Yep, picked up 2 foils from my LGS for $6 a pop. Hopefully this one won't go like foil Postmortem Lunge did for me... (bought at $2.17 and haven't osld yet)
Legacy - Sneak Show, BR Reanimator, Miracles, UW Stoneblade
Premodern - Trix, RecSur, Enchantress, Reanimator, Elves https://www.facebook.com/groups/PremodernUSA/ Modern - Neobrand, Hogaak Vine, Elves
Standard - Mono Red (6-2 and 5-3 in 2 McQ)
Draft - (I wish I had more time for limited...)
Commander - Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build) (dead format for me)
yeah i think the train for scryb rangers left the station a few weeks ago, but foils might have more room to grow.
havent seen the vannifer deck in action myself, but from what ive read it sounds like a solid tier 2 deck. though im dubious about it standing up to something like counters company/devoted company as time goes on; for those looking for creature 'stuff' combos.
misty rainforests have also climbed up 3-4 dollars, and id attribute it to more brewing in those colors thanks to vannifer/growth spiral/wilderness reclamation.
personally im excited to hear about the (likely) new product wizards is announcing at the end of this month. reprints is an easy assumption, but it shouldnt be like a masters set (or else why not just make it a masters set).

What's going on with craterhoof? It's at a record high of $29. I don't think MTGGoldfish did a new decktech with it. Only few variation of elves run it. What decks run it?
Pretty sure Commander is the main factor behind the price. Thing is a truck in almost every go-wide strategy that involves green.
That's gotta be it. Elves has not been doing that much in Legacy recently and Craterhoof is not played in Modern.

But... what's NEW about this in Commander to cause the growth far outpacing the growth of other Commander staples? Yes, it's a great Commander card, and always has been - it's not like people only recently discovered some new utility for it. But this has doubled in price in the past 12 months, it's gained $7 in the past two months, and most other Commander staples haven't. There has to be an explanation that makes more sense than "it's a Commander staple". If that were the defining reason, every not-reprinted Commander staple would have grown similarly.
It sharply climbed when Dominaria came out, and it's sharply climbing again now in the early days of Allegiance. Does this coincide with new Commander decks that would demand it? Is it a game-winning top-end for Vannifar combo causing a sudden surge in demand?
It's a Mythic that has always had a high price point that was never reprinted; that's kind of the building blocks for growing prices. Maybe some people are speculating on its use in Vannifar, but at 8 mana I doubt it. I really think it's just a damned good Commander card that there is only a set number of in the world.
not at all. UMA rares are still trending downwards like i predicted since there is still a boat load of unopened product out there. TtB hasnt gone down as much because the new art is popular (assumption). even chase cards like hierarch are around their local min (40ish).
colonnades in particular are dirt cheap atm.

But in all seriousness, some are still slowly trending up, down, or flat, depending on how much they actually see play. Colonnades are still dropping because Colonnade decks aren't all that good (even though stubborn people keep trying to jam them).
Colonnade decks aren't all that good (even though stubborn people keep trying to jam them).
you say that, but evidence seems to point to the contrary?
on price: colonnade was absurd for a long time. if you can get it sub~$30 you're looking gold. another reprint looks unlikely for a year or two unless they release (warning: speculation) some kind of Modern Challenger deck (which while awesome hasn't been confirmed and isn't on people's radar as a likely thing to be announced).

My view stems from that the good matchups are only marginally favorable and the bad machups feel unwinnably bad. No free wins, but lots of "free losses." If you predict the future and get lucky running into the decks you specifically tuned for, it's awesome. I just don't want to feel like my outcomes are largely determined by the pairings board.
If price is an indication of anything, it's perception. And the price of Colonnade tells us that the perception of the decks that want it is not good. I agree with that perception. It's a solid, mediocre, Tier 2 deck.
dont wanna get too much into it in this thread, but i tend to think that both jeskai and UW (especially UW) are decks not really bad against much if anything, but the cost of that flexibility means you arent really good against anything either.
so its like you said the perception of the deck takes a hit because modern is about hype waves, chasing the ever shifting and practically nonexistent meta, etc. as a purely or highly skewed reactionary deck the 'meta' isnt doing you any favors and goes against the grain of what modern is about, and you dont get to capitalize on variance if it swings your way like other decks can. on top of this games take longer and can be taxing to play round after round.
what this means (if true) is that it doesnt maintain as much of a consistent presence at top tables because top level players with access to a lot of decks and testing groups have little reason to pick it up when they can get real advantages that help them get to elimination rounds if they run hot.
conversely i think UWx is popular at a local level because of the opposite. its powerful and flexible, the local meta is more perceivable, and you aren't frequently playing in 8+ round events with a 'winners meta' (as idsurge puts it) that you might leverage/game.
as for colonnade. i think it only crept up as high as it did because of scarcity. its originally a rare and reprinted at rare. there was a lot of UMA opened, and plenty more in the future. so the price got spiked down.

so you don't want to play UWx decks yourself because of the feelings they instigate in you personally... but they aren't necessarily objectively bad as a result of your feelings. is that fair? WotC have said more than once that from data, they can see that UW control does very well in the format, ranking it only behind KCI in terms of success in their recent ban/restricted announcement. Yes, that means that right now, the data is there to say it's a more consistently successful deck over time than any other modern deck currently legal in the format. welcome to your control overlords. I'm as clueless as you, in terms of knowing what metrics they use, but they hold all the cards (see what i did there) and have the data that we can't see.
colonnade is a card I never picked up and was kicking myself for years, because I remember clearly putting them in the 'basket' of an online store for around £4 each, once upon a time, but thought they were too expensive (hah!). I guess that's an interesting indicator of what Modern has slowly become without me really registering it. At some point, those scalding tarns I had a bunch of (including foils) and traded away gleefully for janky stuff.... well they got pricey. Kinda makes me wish I just haorded all the cards I owned and accumulated more, but actually if that was the case I probably would never have got my playset of goyfs, cryptics and other staples. hmmm
