I sort of (but not really) feel you. A friend of mine also got Lavaclaw Reaches. We felt really badly for him. I even wrote that I wonder if Wizards will realize that the lottery feel that they've added and accentuated to the game will ever come back to bite them in the butt.
I bought all of the "dual land" man lands as preorders during Worldwake. I've always been drawn to "real estate" in Magic because that's what's made me the most profit. I had high hopes for Lavaclaw Reaches. In fact, I felt like it would become the best dual land manland. Hindsight is 20/20 and it's been long since I realized that it had no hope for that. I do hope I am wrong (again) because I would love to see it at least see some play. There's something elegant in Magic about going all in on a manland, not knowing if you will get blown out or not (when the opponent is willing to take 2 or really believes that you have reason to pump it). Maybe elegant is not the word I'm looking for?
@cfusionpm- That's a good price! I thought they were going to be at least $350 from what I heard. That was going to be my limit for purchasing a box.

Despite my better judgment, I placed an ebay purchase for a UMA box just now for $285. Between 10% eBay bucks and no out of pocket cost (paying with PayPal profits from selling SDCC and GRN Mythic Edition PWs), I caved in and got it. That places the price point per pack about the same as the $35 blister packs.
Let's see if this is a good idea or not... But it looks pretty good so far... Especially with that additional box topper.

Seems a pretty decent deal. With the box topper included I cant imagine you have to be very lucky to get most of that back, and if you ARE lucky...
The box toppers being the way they are I wonder how much they are going to end up going for sealed. Some might not want to risk opening one of the duds, so might as well hand off that risk to someone else more willing right?

Most sellers on ebay are floating around the $285-300 range, likely to help fight the "Topper Tax" of about $50 over the individual pack cost you could get from Target. Who knows where it will settle (up or down), but I think it's at least a fair price right now. It could also balloon up if the spoilers are bonkers, or continue to fall if the value is all in the top end.

They are scannable sealed. There’s a video doing the rounds of someone identifying the Temporal Manipulation in his sealed pack before opening it and confirming. A bright flashlight in a dark room can allow enough visibility to make out the card name through the packaging.

Should have waited as they got tons of entries up for 260 dollars. It's a race to the bottom right now and it doesn't look like they are offering it any lower. My guess is the distributors are just playing this up and doing some shady stuff.
I don't fault you for buying it because even I'm tempted to be the grinch this X-mas season and buy a box. The only problem is I've been down this path before with masters 25 and something about this entire masters set feels off. I don't like how they added this box topper and then upped the MSRP. It should have been 240 msrp with the extra box topper being an incentive.
I really don't think this is for people to buy sealed outside of some super rich people. Lets say I make around 3800 dollars a month, and a single box of this at MSRP 335 dollars without tax: This is nearly 9% of my monthly income, which is already being consumed by apartment rent, food, shelter, etc. Is this a problem if someone had time to set aside money because they knew it was coming out a good month ahead? No, of course not! Then someone could probably set aside the money needed across two months and then buy the box. The problem is that sellers also are selling this box incredibly aggressively at 260 dollars and it likely is going to boomerang back up to 300+ after spoilers. That puts a lot of pressure on people to buy early to save themselves about half of their next months contribution towards the purchase.

Yeah, hindsight is 20/20. I should have known to wait for sportsandmore, since they regularly set the floor price on boxes (and every other retailer hates them for it).
Speaking of Box Toppers, mine came in. Definitely not the worst one I could have gotten, but far from anything I actually care about. Immediately to eBay it goes.

1. TCGplayer has a 5% kickback all weekend. I will continue to give a heads up as I continuously check.
2. Is snapcaster mage at some sort of tipping point? I'm seeing them at $45-50, pre-spike prices. It is a mythic in UMA. And other cards at mythic aren't seeing this $20-30 drop.

When Snap was spoiled for MM17, he dropped REALLY hard. Could be had as cheap as $35 for regular copies and $~75 for foils. I fire-sold my playset of regular copies for $175 and picked up a playset of ISD foils for a net cost of about $125 total. The first days and weeks of a release are the absolute best time to buy reprints. There's the undercut-war of sellers trying to find the floor price before it settles. You can often get deals for VERY cheap.
Also, take into account that Snapcaster Mage decks simply aren't good. And haven't been good for a long time. Even UW plays 1-2 most of the time, and a recent build ran 0 (with 3 main deck RIP). This was also true during the last reprint. Snapcaster Mage is an amazing and powerful card, but there are really no top decks that absolutely rely on it, need it, or want a full playset of it. A lot of decks DO want him, but a lot of those decks dwell in the "Tier-Cross fingers and hope for the best" kind of decks that stubborn people like me still play.
Modern price memory has been a real problem. At least Snappy, for all its nondominance, is still the third most used creature in Modern (per mtgtop8). Tarmo and Bob aren't even in the top *20* most used creatures in Modern anymore and they still hold prices above $50!?
I dunno if it is just price memory or if people maybe hadn't bought in a while. I dunno. I wanna finish my playset of snappy's then call it a day, I think.
yeah i agree that snaps being on a downswing in modern is part of the price drop. i think its just been kept afloat because there is some extra demand coming from legacy and vintage, not a whole lot, but enough to provide a buffer.
also the way that snap is designed, its almost impossible to relegated to irrelevance or mediocrity. its scaling off the power of the spells being cast. which is not as true for a card like goyf that just took it on the chin when fatal push was printed, or dark confidant which is still great but has more competition. so this mindset might prompt people to hold onto copies longer, even if they arent playing them.
as much as i hate to admit it, ive been contemplating selling my scalding tarns if i can find a reasonable buyer. they just shouldnt be ahead of the other zendikar fetches given how much they are seeing play. i dunno maybe that extra shove from eternal formats explains it. though looking closer, there are only 2 legacy decks i see that care about fetching basic mountain (grixis control/sneak and show), and only one in vintage (jeskai mentor).

do you guys think that the likelihood of fetches being reprinted goes up with the new arena format on the horizon? like if wizards wants this format to have the fetch + shock mana base, they would have to reprint them in an upcoming standard set.
or do you think that wizards will go down another path?
i ask because wizards pulled one of their classic announcement of an announcement. on dec 6 there should presumably be some big news about arena; likely regarding arena's place in the new pro-tour structure (im guessing an arena pro-tour, which accounts for more of them per year). i think this also includes a small possibility of news on the non-rotating arena format.

Fetches are probably going to be the original dual lands of Modern. They are the land that defines the format and I'm pretty sure that unless something changed over there Rosewater does not like fetchlands. The manabase they just printed is the mana they probably want to deal with as it has proven to be good enough as far as eternal is concerned. The only other land cycles that seem likely to get reprinted are the scars fast lands, the other cycling lands, and possibly any of the weaker dual land cycles from Theros, SoI, etc.
