Just a question on SFM. Why are the GP Stoneforge Mystics cheaper than the original printings from Worldwake. Is the foil low quality, or is this the rule that the original printings would always be more expensive?
I have two from Worldwake, and planning to buy two more to have a playset in case it she become unbanned.
GP SFM: People didn't like the art as much as the original and there's just a lot of them (every player at every GP that year got one, and several got more from side events).
yeah i would say artwork. i dont think the price gap could ever get too large because eventually it will reach some threshold and just owning copies to play wins out. more exclusive promos like judge, or regional ptq are an exception.
for instance if SFM gets unbanned, WWK copies would move faster initially but the promo would eventually catch up.

One more question. Why did the WPN foil path to exiles become much more expensive than the other printings. At the time of their release many years ago, they were the cheapest versions - someone told me because people got them for free, I'm not sure if true? But today they are the most expensive. Had a playset of them, sold 3 and keeping one as a souvenir. Is the price because of Rebecca Guay's art?
What I'm trying to figure out is when the dump will happen from all the retired MTG players. The drop in the player base
Is this a documented thing?
Mark Rosewater made an offhand comment that there were 12 million players, then everyone assumed that meant there was an 8 million player drop (an earlier claim by Wizards of the Coast several years earlier gave a number of 20 million), even though Rosewater clarified there wasn't such a drop and it came from counting players differently.
There wasn't an 8 million player drop, but there has been a lot of players exiting the game lately and some have started selling off their collections to places.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
There are always players exiting and re-entering the game. Unless we have any actual data from Wizards that supports some sort of exodus that would actually affect prices then we shouldn't base any financial decisions on something that may or may not be happening.
Last we heard from Hasbro's financial meeting is that the game is thriving, so I'd take any drop ideas with a pretty large grain of salt.
Good news: Scapeshift reprint is sorely needed, and suddenly RG and UGR variants become far more affordable. Even at a mythic, at that print rate the core set will have that card could end up being $15 by the end of the year.
Bad news: either tcgplayer is having server issues or Valakut is being bought out.

Yeah I went ahead and moved on valakut myself. It's one of the oldest cards in the deck now. Titan, search, the mana base, etc has all seem multiple printings so far. Valakut has two? And one was a promo. Easy place to shift value imo.
Interested to see how much of scapeshift's value moves into the other pieces of the deck, the more the better for me now...
I whatever price gains valakut sees in the next month will fall off afterwards. The deck is kind of soft to ponza (which has seen success earlier this year), meddling mage (ugh), and field of ruin from UW control variants. It's not exactly a cake walk for the deck in today's meta.
Looks like someone bought out all the semi-played GP SFM at SCG. There wete almost 20 of them this morning at 14 dollars each. Tonight all gone. Looks like some people are hopeful for her to be unbanned.

That's nothing new, it has happened a few times before (as it has for BBE and JTMS). I don't expect it to be unbanned in Modern, for the same reason as Birthing Pod: it limits their future design possibilities.
That said, I do have my playset, since I'm using them in Legacy.

No, it doesn't. They've said that they're never printing equipment as powerful as the mirrodin block equipment ever again. This belongs in the ban list thread.
With that, I should pick one or two up in the off chance it comes off because it could easily be a $50 card.
I'm trying to decide when I should pick up those new Scapeshifts. Anyone else looking to capitalize on them and waiting?
I'm waiting. Barring a standard deck that's land relevant I can't see the price hanging where it is. This is trade fodder for anyone not actively building the deck out in modern. I can't see the price not continuing to fall. No clue on the OG printing though. As art/frame/nostalgia do play a part in these things.
i wonder why they commissioned new art for scapeshift and not crucible. is there some sort of pattern they use to decide stuff like that? ive certainly never seen one. i know getting new artwork isnt free (no clue on how much though), but ive always been a proponent of different artwork for most/all reprints.

It's probably a resources issue. Battlebond had a ton of cards that lacked any original art or even flavor text. Some of the cards didn't even fit with the theme of the set. Core 2019 is far more on theme than Battlebond was, but it still has a lot of older art assets thrown in. They'll get around to making new art for it eventually.

this is just hearsay, but i believe they give artists guidelines for certain pieces of art but not all of it. because ive heard that they stockpile art, and when it fits something they can use it. also i remember reading one designer (maybe maro?) who talked about liking a piece of art destined for a product further down the line, and hijacking it for another card he thought it would be better for.
im sure there is a whole lot that goes into it that people generally dont know about (myself included). however i think having distinct art between high profile reprints is favorable factor in the card economy. its not going to stonewall prices dropping, but its also a small buffer for collectors.
for instance if they reprint shocks in the new ravnica block i hope they have new art. more options are good in my book.

I'm sure there is a nostalgia aspect of it too. Shocks show up enough that different artwork isn't going to throw anyone for loops. An enfranchised modern/legacy/commander player will need to pick up a crucible if they don't recognize the art or ask/wait for it to be announced to know what it is. I know I am definitely guilty of cataloguing the battlefield primarily by art and then numbers. It's just how I'm wired, but the masterpieces were pretty jarring as I had to relearn artworks for some that were flying around our tables at the LGS.
As much as I like new art, I also like old art sometimes as it just makes the card easier to process quickly.
What do you guys think of the new Crucible of Worlds? It'll fall in price, but will it bounce back? Is it even played anywhere in modern and legacy?
It sees some fringe play; it is more of an EDH card though. The price is going to absolutely plummet. It doesn't seem like it will be a serious player in standard, and even if it is, the amount of new supply is going to kill the price.
That depends what you mean by "bounce back". Every card that has lasting appeal outside of standard slowly creeps up after the post rotation crash. That will certainly be the case here as well but I expect the price to be in the ~$10 range a few months after the set release. My guess is we never see it approach anywhere close to what it was before the reprint was spoiled.

Yes, any playable card featuring a promo version with art from Avon, Guay, or Nielsen is all, but guaranteed to hold a premium over other versions.
