History of Benalia is also 'lol' worthy right now, but not $40 lol worthy.
I think you are looking at the pre-release version. Regular version is going for 15 dollars. I actually think the card has legs in a couple of builds both modern and standard, but it's not worth the 15. This is probably the first time since maybe gatecrash where the prices on just about everything is probably going to drop.
I'd be interested to pick up some copies in the near future for modern brewing. Where do you think its price will settle in the short term (next two month)? Also, in which kind of modern deck can you see it being played besides tier 4 knight-tribal?
I don't doubt that it could make an impact; I just doubt that it can sustain a $40 price tag when people are buying Dominaria boxes like they're going out of style. BFZ had that same hype, which is what made me think back to the Gideon parallel.
Gid was also being impacted by the effects of the first masterpiece series that was skewing EV quite heavily (I think Misty rainforest topped $300 at one point didn't it?). I don't disagree, but I think karn has a higher floor. It's much more easily splashable, it's a T3 play in standard now with a proper dork (that people actually want to run), and is being tinkered with in existing and successful eternal shells. Modern affinity can spit him out t2 and start churning out cards and huge beaters. Gid only made waves in token decks and control decks, both of which were struggling during BFZ.
I see the new Karn keeping a price of at least $24 for quite a while.
I think part of the hype for the new cards has to do with the current limited supply and that sometimes Planeswalkers like this have seen Pro Tour play, spiking them into nearly infinity $$$ pricewise. I remember Jace, the Mind Sculptor being around $100 after a Pro Tour, I remember Gideon Jura being around $60 after a Pro Tour, and even Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas was around $60 briefly following a Pro Tour. People often "fear buy" cards. I have done so myself many times before, but it often is tough to find a happy medium between "fear buying" and cutting losses, buying a card after a spike, but before another spike. (Case in point is Sphinx's Revelation, a card that went from $2 to $7. I asked people here if I should buy them at $7 and they said, yes, it will go to $30. So I bought 4 of them for $28. You know how bad it feels to pay $28 total for something I could have bought for $8? But it felt a lot better when the card did get to $28 EACH at one point, lol.)

Huh? He's at 40 dollars and climbing right now. He may drop a bit but he's playable in about every format under the Sun. And being colorless is playable in any deck in existence. I hate to say it but 40 bucks may seem like a steal in a few months time. I hope I'm wrong but I have a feeling I'll be right.

I needed to find a better way to say that. I meant that I don't think it will drop that much while it's in Standard, with $24 being the floor, perhaps after a new set that has PW hype also. I don't think it will fall as far as Chandra, Torch of Defiance did, but then she held that price almost to her rotation.
Yes, they are $40 right now, but I don't see them going up, as Dominaria seems to be a set that people will open in droves. I may even do Limited for the first time in a while after a friend shared his pool with me online yesterday. It looks very promising. The only thing I can foresee making the card going up in the immediate future is its presence in a nationwide winning deck list.

Ok, thanks that makes more sense. I'll be honest I think the rock bottom floor will be 30 bucks and wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't drop below 40. My gut feeling says this is a 50-60 dollar card a few months out, even with all the packs about to be opened. I suppose a huge second print/resupply could drop the prices. My opinion is that the set can't support Karn as being a $60 card. There are also a few other cards that are amazing in that set. They will also take up some of the box value and it's really tough to have a box value of over $100. It happens, but it is rare and usually is just a bit over $100. If it ends up being worth much more than $100, heaven forbid, people would buy up all the product and if they open it, cards' prices would go down. Why buy a Karn for $40 when someone else is willing to part with it for $35?
Now if this set was more "Dragon's Maze" like, I would say that it definitely could be a $40 card. Voice of Resurgence was literally a $55 card for a bit because the 2nd most expensive card in the set was the "Voice" Elemental token. Dominaria seems like the opposite of such a set.

Give it a month or so after release unless you're really in a rush for them. The entire set is extremely overhyped at the moment and the prices are reflecting that. There are cards that look like they might be good deals, but they are cards that basically need support from outside standard to work, which is why the prices are low in standard.

It's a good card, but it is very, very hard for an in print mythic to maintain that type of price. For Voice of Resurgence to do it, it required the card being a 4 of in the best Modern and Standard deck simultaneously, alongside almost nothing else in the set having any value what so ever. For Gideon to do it, the card was again a 4 of in the best Standard deck, in a set with very little other value.
Karn is good, but there is other value in this set. I suspect he'll stabilize around $25. It helps a lot that he's Vintage, Legacy, EDH, and Modern playable but that alone won't hold his price.
I should point out that the new Karn is very good in Affinity. I have a friend who has been testing it online and got 5-2 in last Sunday's Modern MTGO Challenge with Affinity. He said that the card is really good there. He would play a 2-3 of main board, replacing Master of Etherium and potentially an Etched Champion.
I did not realize that it could be that good. My thoughts were that since Legacy Affinity (I know, I know, lol) runs Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas, then if anything 4 is played in Affinity, it would default to that being better than Karn.

Modern Affinity can spit him out t2 and allows the deck to recover incredibly well from removal on paper. I can def see the swaps your friend mentioned being worthwhile. It attacks on an axis the deck hasn't previously had with a walker(like it needed more lol). He also makes stony silence look silly. 6/6 tokens don't need cranial playing to rumble.
Well, I'll admit that I didn't see it and that's what hurt. lol. I figured that Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas would be nearly "strictly better." I realize that there's a HUGE difference between 2UB and 4, but I probably underestimated this difference too.

There was a point time a few months ago that Horizon Canopies dropped... when news of a reprint was announced, I sold my last canopy for 30 only. I guess the price just rose up again after the success of Humans and Bogles. I don't regret making that deal though.. because those guys who bought my canopy also bought at a good price the 4 legacy dual lands that I was trying to sell for months.

Yea, Humans really does seem so strong right now.. I guess I could borrow the expedition Canopies from my pimped out Boggles deck, at least to test it out. Still, dropping over a JtMS worth on just a set of Meddling Mages feels...wrong. They do feel like they're here to stay, though, and Mages are the only money piece I don't have already... Is Humans really a safe investment? The toughest part for me is so much of the deck is non-staple. It's like Affinity; you won't end up using any of the pieces in any other Modern decks. I already have the Caverns and Vials, and the Thalia's, though I'm not sure how much she is. I guess spending on a set of Mages isn't too big an initial investment, and if I enjoy the deck as much as I think I will I can always swap out the expedition Canopies for less blingy versions over time, just so I can keep my pet deck in one piece.

So I guess Wizards changed their positions on FNM promos with Dominaria. Instead of having them allocated for just FNM on certain months, they send the piles to LGS and say "have at it the best you see fit." So wouldn't ya know, they end up on eBay immediately. Picked up a playset of Opts to replace my Invasion playset I bought a year and a half ago on a whim (25 cents each, imagine if I shelled out the cold hard cash for the $3 foils too.... ) Anyway, two came in so far and I like the way they look a lot. I hope they keep the cool frame idea so they can continue to make good and relevant promos. I assume as long as Modern has crappy cantrips (and Opt/Serum are the "best") it will continue to hold value. They're currently in the ~$10 range, which is fairly standard for FNM promos that see eternal play (like Push and Path and Serum).
yeah they do look pretty sweet. definitely prefer this art over the last one. i mean who wouldnt strike a bad ass pose in front of a freaking statue of them self. the invasion art is still pretty dope though.
on that note has anyone noticed a difference in the feel of the cards? they changed the coating process with this set.
