WotC will have a day of reckoning for putting Iconic Masters in the big box retailers. I've purchased several from Walmart, and i need to explain to my LGS that this is not an indictment of them, I only did so because I get 10% off as an employee (and for the majority, a special 25% off as a one time opportunity). If I hadn't had the discount, I would not have bought any, anywhere.
But I am a corner case, and LGS losing sales to, of all places, multibillion dollar corporations has to hurt, both the financial and the 'relationship' side. It's hard enough to stay afloat as an LGS, this will have them screaming uo their pipeline, it is very real money taken away from them.
Expect a backlash from the game stores. I do not know what form it will take, but things have really been hard lately, with the change to prize structure at FNM, Iconic Masters being massively overprinted, and general set fatigue. We've had 2 masters sets in 9 months, and we have another 2 coming in the next 9 months. 4 masters sets in 18 months? Conspiracy, Commander Anthology, regular standard sets, Unstable, FTV (which, from all accounts, flopped hard) the flood is relentless.
If I didn't know better, I would say WotC is going under. Decipher pulled a similar move when they lost the Star Wars license.
But I still wonder. If they stopped Masters sets after M25, it would take the market 3 or more years to recover from just Iconic Masters. One can only imagine the damage M25 will do.
Again, totally agree with the crux of your statement, but I don't think it's fair to point the blame solely at WotC for mass product printings and the like when many of these issues are out of their control. WotC develops and tests the product, but it's ultimately Hasbro who dictates how many units are produced, where they're manufactured, who gets to sell them, etc. I'm sure there are a handful of WotC employees who feel the same way and know that over-saturating the market with products isn't good for the game, but Hasbro calls the shots. WotC is essentially akin to a video game developer working under the umbrella of EA.
MTG is Hasbro's bread & butter and, if WotC was "going under", Hasbro's market value wouldn't be surging over 5 years. Shareholders expect continuous growth on their investments, but those expectations aren't realistic. With shares hitting an all-time high this year, it seems more likely that Hasbro is demanding that more product be developed and placed on more store shelves to keep investors happy. This is obviously terrible for the health of the game, so let's hope they realize that before it's too late.
The situation with Iconic masters prices runs a little deeper than just the print run and early spoilers. There seems to be an uptick of people selling out of the game in modern and I've noticed this at my local store, online at TCGPlayer, and now even Rudy did a video talking about it. I think things will stabilize, but not before a lot of players leave the game.
This is happening when modern is arguably healthy. It's basically like the competitive scene for magic is stagnating and falling apart.

You can still try it, but remember, we still have Masters 25 in the spring and Eternal Masters in the fall. You don't think Ensnaring Bridge, Crucible of Worlds and Engineered Explosives won't be reprinted?
No one knows where the chips will fall, but I will say that Zen fetches will be reprinted at least once more, likely in Masters 25.
The only safe place to put your money is in the three Masterpiece sets, Judge foils and the Reserve List.
Agree with what you said there... sort of felt the bubble could burst at any moment, so I cashed in like crazy last October 2017 on almost all the cuerrently expensive modern staples that I own... 4 Arcbound Ravager, 4 Opals, 4 Scalding Tarn -thank goodness tarn spiked a bit again-, and 1 Engineered Explosives... SOLD THEM ALL. From the sales, bought 2 tarmo, and then some ponza pieces for casual fun, the rest of the cash I put into the bank for safekeeping. Now the most expensive things I have are only 2 goyf, and hoping I don't get burned if Wotc reprints goyf to the ground to become 20$. There's also still 1 Crucible and 4 Inkmoth in my binder... would sell them at the first opportunity if a reasonable buyer appears on facebook.
Most likely they are going to hit all the stuff they missed that was obscure in Masters 25. I'm also expecting the set to be just as top heavy as Iconic Masters, assuming rumors were true and the cards in iconic were originally the lotto cards for Ixalan. That means probably 54 cards of value and the rest are going to be filler for draft purposes. Of those 54 cards about 27 are going to be "the big ones". The other half will fall into the categories that the kamigawa dragon cycle and odd-balls like Lotus Cobra slot into.

Why haven't they reprinted chalice of the void or noble hierach yet? Hopefully they don't reprint it when it's no longer needed in the meta.
Hierarch is an RPTQ promo in 2018. A goodly number of them will be entering circulation that way.
I mean, it WAS reprinted in Mm2015. That wasn’t all that long ago. There are plenty of cards that haven’t seen any masters set reprint at all. Hierarch had one, two years ago. Chalice had one in the original modern masters.
I heard the exact same rumor about Iconic Masters. Any idea which of the 54 was supposed to be the Lotto cards?
All of the cards at rare and mythic that came prior to the RTR boom. No one is ever making Hypersonic Dragon a masterpiece in a million years, but Lord of the Pit? Definitely would have been the low end of the spectrum. I mean, it ultimately doesn't matter much at this point which ones were supposed to be masterpieces, but iconic masters is definitely the "iconic" demonstration of what the result of stapling bulk to a handful of gold looks like.
Honestly, I'm just curious when wizards will stop running their game into the ground. I've been back since kahns collecting cards and playing on and off when I can and ever since the downgrades post origin clash pack I just sort of wondered if 2 years or 3 years was about right. I think this is about 3 years so... yay I barely managed to pull an Otto Van Bismark! I mean, not that they turned things around but when it all was going to start punching them in the face with the booster pack products.
As far as the singles market, here is how this works:
1) Big box openers are going to be opening boxes as usual and selling singles. The downside is that because there are fewer players, the costs on all the playable cards are going to rise in the coming standard. On top of which, attempts to stabilize the market on older cards will get weaker because fewer people are opening masters to draft.
2) weaker sealed product prices. Unless they do something to the formula on the draft chaff vs playables the boxes will cost less.
3) Fully expecting to hear about weak FNM attendance unless the spikes are really huge from Return to Dominaria. I do not expect much from Rivals.
4) No idea what is going to happen with Masters 25. They could drastically under print the set and it spikes prices across the board like MM1, or if the print run is like Iconic masters we'll see something like the current card / sealed market. Probably less bad since they wont do early spoilers.

Would that not indicate...its NOT healthy?
If the balance and variety of decks is showing diversity it's a healthy format. The population for MTG feels like it is coming off it's high and is hopefully just dropping down to a more stable level. Nothing keeps going up forever and it's perfectly healthy to have a population decrease as long as the population isn't nose diving into the floor.

If the Competitive Scene is 'stagnating and falling apart' thats bad for everyone.
EDIT: For what its worth, I sold all but 2 decks, my Kiki (to go back to Twin when Wizards wakes the **** up) and Turns.
... Okay, maybe this is actually worse than I was thinking? I saw people selling their stuff off on TCG Player, my LGS has had people selling out, and Rudy did a video, but now if people are saying they are selling out of all but their favorites on mtg Salvation and this is the story from two people already, I'm getting kind of skittish here...
Checked Ebay and looked at recent listings. There are people selling their entire modern decks like Eldrazi Tron, Merfolk, Burn, Titanshift, and a few others that were all listed within the last week and a half. Damn, I missed a full zendikar fetchland and shockland collection for 300 usd. For me these times are kind of like magical christmas land, but if people are no longer playing I'm not going to have anyone to play against. I'm hoping far more people are just selling out of whatever they are hanging on to that they don't like playing and are doing what you are doing.

Yeah, also I'm looking forward more towards return to dominaria than Rivals. I got zero hope rivals will be anything spectacular unless they did something like with Aether Revolt and put a ton of pushed cards into the set. I'm expecting modern will probably get a few new merfolk friends and maybe a reprint. We did get Spell Pierce and Opt is now modern legal.

Hmm, it's just that I realized having money in the bank is more stable... than having money on cards that the folks at WoTC can decide to reprint at any moment. Now that the cards are converted to cash, the money can be used for other things like pay for medical bills if someone got sick, pay for repairs if my comp gets broken, give me a peace of mind that there's a little more extra money in the bank gaining interest, etc.
And it's also the holiday season, so the other people are probably selling some expendable cards to have some extra cash. ^^
I use the cards as small investments that I can play with while they grow in value. It's more fun than CD's, and the return is greater. While there is no growth in Noble Hierarch or Crucible of Worlds, there is a lot in Reserve List cards and the Masterpiece series, as well as Judge foils. The rest is just the cost I pay to have a hobby.
I see copies on ebay as low as $10.99 a piece, where it was closer to $13 a couple of weeks ago. Will it go sub $10 American Dollars? Its not in demand right now and this is how I like to pick up certain cards when they bottom out. Have we reached bottom yet or give it a couple more weeks?

Considering the fact that boxes continue to drop in value, w/ current lowest BIN eBay price being ~$143, I think Burnwillows will surely continue its downward trajectory. I'd actually keep an eye on the foils to see when they bottom out, because ATM the foil multiplier on IMA copies is only x1.5
Not sure if this is the right place to ask... but try anyway. For those getting the basic lands from Unstable... what's the right time to buy them? When I look at on line stores, they're 2 dollars each. Would the prices drop someday to just cents or are the prices going to go up in the next months?
The demand is so high on them you might as well buy them while the supply is there. They aren't the highest priced cards, but just go look at sold listings on ebay and you'll see people are buying them in lots. It's pretty close right now with just buying a booster box of unstable since you'll get a land in every pack plus one foil potentially. Not often I'd recommend a sealed product over the singles, but unstable is like that.

EDIT: Checked again... there are only 8 Unstable forests left. you're right, the demand is high. They were 180+ yesterday, I'm sure.
Unstable was released literally two days ago...the prices will undoubtedly drop. Foil prices may vary depending on how common they are, but the non-foils won't get more expensive than they are during release weekend.
