If I didn't already have a set of signed THS Thoughtseizes, I'd pick up the new ones with the old art. Otherwise, not much excites me besides some Commander fodder.
The sense of direction I'm getting is that wotc is trying to move away from older cards and I'm not sure where the push is coming from. If anything people want the older cards to bridge the gap between generations of players.
Modern is literally the melting pot format where timespiral meets Kahns block, mirrodin meets kaladesh, etc. Not sure how printing cards from the last 3 years helps this goal.
Maybe WotC is conditioning the card pool for a new format intended to either be some sort of stopgap between Standard and Modern or outright replace Modern and let Modern fade away into a cesspool of obscurity like Vintage and Legacy.
Actually, I think the reason they are printing some of the cards from recent sets is that they are not 100% sure when the card stock issue started. When the card stock bends quickly like what is being seen with amonkhet, it has a tendency to break apart rather quickly. I've got some prints I did on this cheap stuff due to graphic design projects and it wasn't pretty after 3 years. I think if people double sleeve they might be okay, but that is why I'm not really valuing cards from amonket and HOU too highly. I've already sold off the scarab gods I had due to the fact I could already see the bending happen. They will be worth a fraction of what they are right now in pretty short order.
At least that is my 2 cents on the issue. The old copies of Giant Growth and lightning bolt aren't going anywhere.

I don't think that's one of the cards that is going to free fall, but a lot of cards in the set are going to be dropping at least another 20-25%. The boxes themselves are being fire sold for 170 usd on ebay right now and I'm seeing listings with 50+ booster boxes. Also this is showing up in super markets.

When can we collectively tell Wizards that their design team is horrible and they should stop designing anything for Limited?
When we also stop buying these sets every time they are released.
Well, given the fact the boxes are being fire sold I think we can say that there were not a lot of pre-orders for this set. That being said, I think the price should have been lower per box as this is really more equivalent to a really good standard set than a masters set. They have a few cards that have actual demand behind them, but the majority of the cards were just expensive because of low supply.

I've nabbed most of the stuff I want from this set already. The extra price drops locally today we're quite nice. I'm holding out on the Canopy's though. They're $50CAD a pop and I'm expecting we'll see another $10 come off of that.
It seems like the whole set has been lost in the Unstable hype and wallet fatigue post Ixalan. Everyone locally, including the shop owners, seem to be keenly waiting for Unset/Rivals/Dominaria/Master's 25.
IMA has cratered most of the causal card prices. The two cards holding out or dipping lesser as compared to the rest of the set so far are Horizon Canopy and Aether Vial.
I'm waiting for 2 more weeks before buying any of them. IMA pack sales are doing badly against the other master series in the local shops that I frequent.

Technically, Ixalan sold horribly as well, but it was at least well received. I don't think Ixalan itself had a lot of impact on modern though given it barely impacted standard.

Huh? Like Kroger, Food Lion, Giant Eagle, Safeway, etc.???
Never mind, just saw the 3 card draft packs that will be offered. (WalMart, Target, etc.) I wish I would have known of this beforehand, I had NO clue they were doing this. This would have also changed my stance on pricing. Knowing these are offered at the box stores I concur that prices are going to fall as there will be WAY more of these printed than in previous Masters sets. I won't be buying any singles for a few weeks now as prices should continue to fall.

Yeah, this is strait up madness on wizards part. Honestly, the entire masters set idea was okay until I saw how they started to use it. Pulling all the good "safe" cards from standard sets and supplementary products priced over some arbitrary number on the secondary market and pooling them into a luxury set for financial gains is a horrible idea.

So my son and I ran by Target to see if they had these 3 pack draft packs. They did amazingly, $30.99 a piece. I buy one for each of us. Checking out Target is having a 25% off on toys today so we get a nice discount of about $2.50 a pack. This is where these packs should start at anyway at $7 to $7.50 each not $10 a pop.
Magus of the Moon Third pack garbage. Whatever, his first card pays for what I spent plus a little. I'm happy for him he is a great student and even greater son and deserves some good pulls for his fantastic grades.
My packs pretty much garbage except a single Glimpse the Unthinkable. I did pull a Thran Dynamo at uncommon at least. All 6 foils total were commons. I would have felt a lot worse at 10 bucks a pack over 7.50 a pack.
I see these prices falling more. This set doesn't feel very "premium" when you get maybe a dollars worth of chaff in 2/3 of the packs. A premium pack should have all foils be at uncommon and above, a foil token in each pack and only 7 commons and 6 uncommons per pack to justify the price.

Whoah, since when did big box stores start carrying premium/Masters products? Holy *****, WotC is digging themselves a nice grave; I'm glad you posted this before I pulled the trigger on a booster box. I found some on eBay that fell below $165 and I was considering it, but if Walmart/Target are slinging IMA product, I'm not going near a box.
Btw, congrats to your kiddo; I bet he was psyched. Really cool Magic is something that the both of you can enjoy together. I'm actually tempted to pop into my local Target now and see if they're running that same sale. I have a gift card to burn and like collecting sealed boosters, so that beats paying MSRP.
As with all Masters sets, value is all over the place. I opened 9 packs a few days ago - foil Grove, Horizon Canopy, Flusterstorm, Bloodghast, Consecr. Sphinx, Glimpse, 3 Baubles... cracked 3 more today - Firemane Avenger, Malfegor, and I don't even remember what else. Total garbage.
Bauble seems to be slowly bottoming out in Europe, currently at 3,50 EUR. It was what, 8 a week ago?
Yeah, so I just found out that people can literally go into target today and get an entire booster box of iconic masters via the draft packs for basically 140 dollars. I called up my local target and they are flooded with the things.
Okay, at this point I'd say if anyone wants to buy anything as far as singles from Iconic masters maybe give it a week and keep an eye on the prices. I don't think even Aether Vial is going to hold where it's at if people are going to rush into stores doing MTG draft pack sales that are this aggressive. I mean, I was about to snap up horizon canopy, but given I only need two of them even if the price starts climbing I'm not losing more than 2 dollars, and that's a big if on the climbing part.
Edit: Wow, and the box prices are still dropping on TCG player. I didn't think I'd see a masters set dropping to 165, but it looks like it is going that direction right now.

Price is still $31/3pks, or just a hair above MSRP. Would be $248 +tax for equivalent of booster box (24 packs).
I think Colt47 was referring to the current 25% off you can get at Target. However, I am not sure how they got to $140. The packs are $31 and would cost $248 for 8 Draft Packs (as you mentioned). 25% off that is still $186 + tax so it is still over $200 for a box at Target.

Because I just found out that some of the stores are selling them for 50% off. I don't know if it is a store wide thing across multiple areas or just a few of them, but my Meijer had them off for 50%. I don't normally buy packs but I did get a blister and took a shot at it. Nothing really great, but at that price, I don't exactly feel bad about it. Did get a Lotus Cobra though. Target also had packs selling for even below that sales price so I'm wondering if whoever did the math did it with the 50% off price instead of the 25% off.
This set really isn't that bad. It's just that the price is way too high for the contents considering how many of the cards in the set are really high costed bombs that will never see play outside of a cube or edh deck. It's sort of like the Kamigawa of Masters sets.

Yeah, they're not marked off at the Target I'm at right now (happened to be out and about anyway and took that pic). But I did just spend about $30 on a few Commander staples and cheap foils from ebay and tcgplayer. Got exactly what I wanted for very reasonable prices and no gamble.

Just got back. The price checker had them at the MSRP 30.99 price point, so I checked out the toy isle to read the fine print and the other exclusions were Lego, CAH, and some other kiddie ***** I'm not familiar with. They rang up w/ the discount and after my state's sales tax, it came out to ~8/booster. If anybody lives in a state with no sales tax, you can pick up 8 of the kit things for a total of 24 boosters at a price point of ~$173. Still comes out more expensive than the boxes currently free-falling on eBay, but also ~$80 cheaper than buying 24 individual boosters at MSRP.
Seeing Masters sets at a big box store really left me with a bad taste in my mouth and I'm sure "Masters 25" will follow suit. The print run for IMA must be astronomical in comparison to previous Masters sets and I'm sure local game stores are just overjoyed about it...Granted, that Target sale kinda came out of the woodwork, but it's not a good look for WotC.

My store had them marked that same way. The discount still applies at the register. I had to meander around to the toy aisle before I saw the signage, but if your store has signs reading "25% off toys this Saturday only", you're golden.
Well we also don't know the rare/mythic/duplicates distribution since all the packs are separate and individual compared to a box. Could have tons of gold, could have nothing. Ironically, the only booster boxes I've bought in the past year and a half were a MM17 and an Unstable pre order, both to draft with friends. I've lost too much cracking older boxes to want to do it anymore.

It's really not worth it to worry about the distribution when it comes to packs. It's all a gamble except at very high yields, such as getting multiple cases of booster boxes.

It's really not worth it to worry about the distribution when it comes to packs. It's all a gamble except at very high yields, such as getting multiple cases of booster boxes.
