I should also clarify that I'm not taking the set into consideration. If it's literally the only playable from the set, like Voice of Resurgence was, then it could retain close to that price for a bit.
Not really - EMN gave us Collective Brutality, Selfless Spirit, Thalia, Emrakul, Flayer, Queller, Reveler...
She is pretty much the only Modern playable mythic aside from Ishkanah, and that's kinda pushing it already.

Grim Flayer is also a mythic, and quite good in Modern Abzan/GBx Rock. And in strange aeons, even Emrakul could be Modern playable (if Tron could get delirium).
But yeah, Eldritch Moon has a good selection of Modern playables and staples. The fact that it is a small set, with no Masterpieces, and released in Summer (that's a huge deal, since there is a lot less players active during the 2 months when it was drafted), is what keeps the prices of the EMN cards relatively high.

Summer is the worst time, since people are going on vacation, or they have to take care of their kids, or there's simply much more to do outside. December and January are relatively bad as well, because of the Holidays (especially if they fall on or around Friday) and the over-spending.
There's a reason core sets were/will be released in summer. There was also a lot of products released around Eldritch Moon: Eternal Masters was released on June 10th, Eldritch Moon on July 22nd, Conspiracy 2 on August 26th and Kaladesh on September 30th. It lasted 2 months only and had a draft-only set released during that time.

The sad part is that I own playsets of most of those cards (except 3 Thalia, Heretic Cathar and only 1 Emrakul, the Promised End right now), yet didn't know their sets per se.

I really hope chalice, karn, lilis, bobs and goyfs get printed in this masters set.
Specially chalices and karn.
Soooo I don't know if you're being serious and/or talking about Iconic Masters, but...
Just in case it's both: there's already been a full spoiler and none of those cards are in the set. I would expect both Chalice and Karn in Masters 25 next year, but that's just me.

I figured they were referring to Master 25. If Karn/Chalice don't see reprints in that set, copies will easily surpass $100/pop; I would imagine that WotC is aware of this as well, so I'm banking on those two being shoe-in inclusions along with Noble Hierarch
Define 'the time'. Would a lot of people like to see a reprint? Sure - but MM3 and IMA didn't deliver, and Sunburst isn't exactly a mechanic I think WOTC is eager to re-introduce any time soon. So...? Yeah, no?
With masters 25 trying to print cards from every year of magic, won’t this make the set unlikely to go heavy on any mechanic (because that would cause an undue weight of cards from that mechanic’s year) - isn’t this exactly the most suitable reprint set to touch on little- used mechanics because every mechanic in this set will not have many cards?
The MM series has a tendency to load up on mechanics to coincide with the newest eligible reprint blocks - the first set with innistrad and rtr block cards had flashback and miracle and bloodrush and overload... but since 25 is going to be so scattershot anyway there’s no better time to touch on those mechanics that don’t get much attention in reprint sets - because here, everything will be already thin to cover the 25 years.

There's no rhyme or reason to these masters sets aside from profitability. Iconic Masters has some killer modern reprints, but falls short in the "Iconic" category. I expect MM25 to essentially be an Iconic Masters Part 2; slapping the 'Masters' label on a set sells packs and given how close together the releases are, I'd be surprised if during development IM & MM25 weren't a single set that got broken in two in order to distribute value and maximize profit.

You know you are invoking the "it can't get any worse" rule that the gods since immemorial have put in place when it comes to the "wizards reprint policy". Given how they have handled prior sets they generally only include a mechanic when they can dedicate a good portion of the set to it. Did anyone keep track of how many archetypes they focused on in each set? They went with UW flash in the last modern masters, but I don't recall what else they went with. I feel pretty confident we will get at least 3 different mechanics.

They are going to keep making masters sets for a good long time. Honestly, the entire card distribution system is horrible, but there's not really a better solution in sight at the moment because if they favor one side of the equation too much than the other gets hurt, and even supporting a specific side can backfire in ways people don't expect. For example, BFZ got opened into oblivion and because the prices are so heavily suppressed there is no urgency to pick up cards. It sounds great for players, but not so much for stores who have to sit on the product. Ixalan is the first set that they don't have lotto cards in, but given what we got in place of lotto cards I think the set will get opened a ton. The main issue is that all the cost is going onto the players now since there are no collectible cards, meaning if anything see's competitive play it's price is likely to jump hard. Modern can be even worse if wizards prints something crazy. When Eldrazi took off all the modern support cards went through the roof.

Well, since you hate Masters sets so much, at least this next one is the last.
As in the last one for the first quarter of 2018? Hasbro is gonna have WotC churning out Masters sets like gangbusters so long as players keep paying $10 a pop on boosters. Since you hate clicking two pages back to read previous comments, you must've missed the part where I said it wouldn't be surprising to see WotC print the same amount of Masters/premium sets as Standard sets in a given fiscal year. Same production cost, less R&D, and all sold at a ~300% premium. Unless Hasbro shareholders start hating money, this won't be the last Masters set.
As far as "hating" Masters sets, the only thing I hate is WotC insisting on marketing them as draft sets when the majority of players buy them for the reprints. If they're going to print a Modern premium set and mark it with a premium MSRP, then they should only include cards that see Modern play. If they want to print a set that's fun to draft, stick with Conspiracy and let players draft without paying an arm & leg just because ******* Tarmogoyf happens to be in the set. That's not to say that drafting those sets isn't an enjoyable experience, but it's time to call a spade a spade.

Right, but making it a draft set lets them fill it with filler and make the excuse that it's for drafting purposes. Lets them drag out the process of making masters sets without crashing too many prices at once.

You're absolutely correct; that's why I'd like them to drop the act already. I don't expect the next MM to be chock-full of value, but there are a ton of relatively cheap cards which could be included that are modern-playable and won't destabilize the market. Off the top of my head: Slippery Bogle, Gladecover Scout, Unified Will, Logic Knot,Shard Volley, a billionth Birds of Paradise reprint, etc. My whole gripe is that any player who cracks a pack of MM should walk away from the transaction with cards that are actually useful in the format, whether those cards have a high price tag or not. Instead, it's more like walking away with either one all-star Modern staple or a just a bunch of ***** that might be useful in EDH and maybe a Modern-playable uncommon. It all boils down to price; boxes already contain 12 less packs, so diluting the card pool with draft garbage makes for a glorified $10 lotto ticket. That methodology would be acceptable if the MSRP was akin to that of MM13, but for $10/pack there's no reason why cracking a pack should be boom or bust; if you don't pull one of those lotto cards, you should at least have 5-10 cards that could be used in some Modern archetype(s), even if they only see fringe play.

That I can get behind. I opened a box of MM17 and I think I kept the rare and about half the time one other card from the pack before putting everything else in the donation box. Logic Knots, Slippery Bogles, Unified Will are great examples of cards that could be included that would at least make me keep the cards on the off chance I ran that deck or even make me consider buying into the rest of the deck.
This thread is full of idiots... Lightning Bolt is NOT being reprinted.
Many times has a writer in Wizards said so, because of the plain and simple fact that it's too powerful for what it costs. x/3 creatures shouldn't be able to die at instant speed for one mana without a signifigant drawback. (like PTE giving you a land)
I absolutely guarantee that LB will not be printed in M10, and you can quote me on that.
