Just as a heads up, the cheapest Tarmo on SCG is $75, while the cheapest copies on TCG Player are $64 and $63 on eBay (usually with free shipping and buyer protection), or about a ~$45 savings on a playset. I don't mean to intrude too much on personal buying preferences, but I have been buying and selling on eBay for nearly 20 years and have at least a couple thousand dollars flow through TCG Player. They are great and reputable middle-men sellers with excellent service guarantees and support for buyers. At least for me, it's difficult to justify paying top dollar (and often tax and shipping) from chain retailers when these options are readily available.
This is good advice. I've also been on Ebay for around 12 years and it's been very good for me.
It may be different for theFluff though because I think he's located in the Philippines. It's just something to consider, but it may definitely be the best option.

That may complicate things for TCG Player, but eBay has a Global Shipping Program, whereby sellers don't have to do anything special on their end. I have sold many things internationally, and eBay covers all the costs. Basically, seller ships to eBay and eBay ships internationally. All address labels and heavy lifting after the fact is taken care of on eBay's side, so any seller offering "Global Shipping" is a fairly safe bet.
This is what I was thinking as well. I just have heard that some packages overseas get searched at Customs and wasn't sure if they searched from certain locations more or not. I do agree that Ebay is very safe. Only burned once in 1380 transactions - for $8.08 when I had 54 only rep.

Goyf is going to be far more stable over the next month than Ramunap will be. If you need them, lock into them now, before the price jumps. You can always save and get the goyfs a month later. That might not be the case for the Rams.
Thanks, but I already have it planned. Will order the goyf and blooming marsh at SCG, then just buy Ramunaps from local Standard players who only play Standard. Goyf really has the higher priority to me now, since it's needed by the deck that I use at FNM. The Ramunaps are only for storing at the binder.

Advice appreciated, but it's ok. There will be a 67 dollar goyf at SCG once a SP 2017 becomes available, I'm just waiting on that. Need just one more, so the 3 dollar difference isn't much of a loss. And about Customs, over here they don't charge playing cards like mtg.. they only charge clothes, accessories, and books upon inspection - I know because some of my friends order cosplay costumes and accessories from online stores, and I'm the one who pick those up at Customs.
And about Ebay, just to be honest.. haven't bought anything from there yet. I'm a very busy person... 9-10 hours shift mon-saturday at a clinic -- that leaves me exhausted. Buying at Ebay... then have to check seller reputation and worry that I might receive a fake tarmo - even with buyer protection, I can't handle that additional stress. At SCG, only have to choose something and be free of any worries that a fake mtg card would get sent.

Hmm, my packages don't get searched much... probably because after sometime the customs officials already know what's inside. MTG cards if it's from the US, and cosplay stuffs if from somewhere else. My clinic is just a walking distance away from the post office. ^__^
Oh, and forgot to ask this. Have been wanting to get one or two Liliana, Death's Majesty. Is it possible that she would lower in price after Standard rotation?

the card itself really isn't worth the card board its printed on...does it serve a purpose? Sure its a blue 1 drop that might not be a 1/1. I would not put it in a list and expect to win a PTQ or GP though.

Agreed. It's too much mana for too little in other formats.

In general, it's fairly rare for a planeswalker of any ilk to retain a high price point in modern. The few that do generally are 3 mana mono-colored walkers like Liliana of the Veil and more recently Liliana, The Last Hope. The vast majority of 4 mana walkers usually stick between 8 and 15 usd with the exception of some truly spectacular ones like Tamiyo, the Moon Sage, who sees play in Commander and is actually a 5 drop. Personally, I think people are overlooking the new Gideon of the Trials.

I recently started playing Magic again, and I'm looking to flesh out my online collection. So far I only really have the cards for Mono U Tron. Any tips on staples I should be picking up? Looking to grab cards that might be cheap right now but useful in the future. I'm mostly interested in playing Esper color decks, but that doesn't mean I don't have love for R/G.
Also, any lands I should be picking up? Shocks, fetches, etc. that might be dropping in price?

Do you want to end up with just a massive random collection of Modern staples or do you want to work towards building a specific archetype? I very much recommend the latter.

If you have the cash to blow, I'd just start buying fetchlands. The MM17 reprint dropped prices on the enemy colored ones, but they will eventually go back up. Otherwise, pick a deck and specifically start buying the cards for it. UW control is very viable in modern right now and runs between $600 and $700 total, putting it basically in the middle of modern decks. Blue Tron often runs chalices, so if you already have those along with tron lands and expedition map you could start building towards eldrazi tron too.

I agree with you, I would rather focus on one or two archetypes to avoid wasted capital on over purchasing. You need self control if you have a limited budget like I do. It's easy to over buy in this hobby, Magic Is Addictive. I see decks every day I would like to build.

I find I usually underestimate the costs on smaller cards than the big ones. It's easy to say that you don't have the money for 4x Engineered Explosives, but it's a lot harder to say you don't have the money for a Path to Exile when you lose track of your total costs on other small fry during the month. Picking up an Scavenging Ooze here and then a Hallowed Fountain there.

This is solid advice. Focus on one or two archetypes and if you have some spending flexibility, I'd pick up land staples that are on the cheap. I started playing again about 4 years ago after not playing for 8-ish years and slowly picked up lands anytime I needed to get my TCGplayer cart to $25. Eventually I wound up with play sets of fetches, shocks, etc and it definitely saved me money in the long run. There are still some that I've never needed for a deck, but it's nice to know that I already have the manabase for a number of different archetypes that I may want to play in the future. Right now, the fetches are still at a nice price point and (most) shocks are still hovering around the $10 mark. Enemy fastlands are still in standard rotation, but will definitely see play once they rotate. Spire of Industry is still relatively cheap and sees Modern/Eternal play.
Any advice on what to do with a couple spare ballistas? Mardu vehicles hasn't completely fallen of the radar and is still a widely played deck in standard, but it's modern stock seems to be rising.
I'd hold onto them for the time being. Last I checked, they were still going for under $10 on TCGplayer and you're correct in saying that the card is gaining traction in Modern. In addition to the various Tron lists that play it, it's starting to be adopted by various RG Ponza decks.

Right, well, given that you're on a limited budget, the last thing I would do is buy a bunch of random stuff that 'might be useful some day'. Proxy a couple decks you like first, test them EXTENSIVELY on Cockatrice, then decide what you want to buy into.
Either way, lands are never a bad idea to get. Like Joban said, you can't really go wrong with shocks, fetches and fastlands right now as they won't be getting cheaper any time soon. But prioritize above all, don't just immediately buy what looks cool to you today. This is how I ended up with 4 decks and no time to get good at any one of them properly, so I ended up selling everything again anyway and focusing on 1 deck instead.
UW Control is a good one for sure if you like Esper colors and long games, Grixis Shadow is also in two of those colors and arguably the best deck in the format right now, but on the pricier end. It all depends on how much you're willing to spend.
I'd also say don't be afraid of going into new archetypes that seem to be blooming out of standard. A lot of people got scared away from eldrazi when it that shall not be named happened, but eldrazi ultimately still stuck around. Modern spirits is also still a thing even if it isn't making headlines like Grixis Shadow.

Ballista is going up, but I think it's a no-brainer candidate for a reprint in the 2019 Modern Masters, which could drive it back down a little, at least temporarily.

Have they confirmed how far they'll be going with MM2019? 2013 ended at Shards of Alara block. 2015 ended at the Scars block. 2017 ended at RTR block. Seems like the pattern so far has been that they add the next 2 to the Modern Masters line-up. It would make sense if then ended this next on at Khans block for 2019. Then add BFZ and SOI (maybe Kaladesh block to add a total of 6 new sets since the block structure moved to 2 sets) for 2021.
I personally wouldn't count on a Ballista reprint until 2021 unless they officially stat that they'll be moving their end point up to Kaladesh for 2019.
I saw Chameleon Colossus in a few sideboards this weekend. If you're looking for a spec target, that might not be a bad one for foreign foils if they're reasonable.

Hi. Is this a good time to buy a playset of Verdant Catacombs? Really need them for my GB deck. Or is it better to wait? Any chance the enemy fetches would be reprinted again this year?
