Between the Ixalan spoilers hinting at some Merfolk support upcoming in Standard, the Merfolk/Goblin duel deck, a doubling up on Masters sets and a tribal Commander product run it seems likely that some needed cards for this deck are going to get reprinted - and seeing as I'm slowly getting the pieces together (Commander fan who just wants a box to open when strangers say they don't play EDH) I was wondering if more seasoned players have any opinions on what's safe to buy now and what would be worth holding off on.
I'm already set for the cheapo Merfolk like Harbinger of the Tides, Master of Waves, Silvergill Adept and a bunch of the little tech and sideboard pieces like Spreading Seas and Mutavault. I honestly don't expect Merfolk in C17 and my money is on two Cursecatchers in the deck for DD MVG and a promo of either of the Lords (preferably Lord of Atlantis with new art!) I think it's reasonable to expect Aether Vial to be in one of the two Masters sets at least, but Cavern of Souls is probably going to be benched considering WotC apparently views it as Mythic now, right? I've heard Spirits mentioned on and off for C17 because of that Taigam guy so I guess it's possible Kira, Great Glass-Spinner could be in that list.
Opinions? Thoughts? Inb4 "no one could possibly know yet dont ask" don't be that guy, I just wanna hear what people are thinking
Merged with the "Modern Prices Discussion" thread. This is an specific post that falls into this thread better than others, and in a way directly deals with the prices of these cards.

On mtgsalvation people don't want to discuss ideas, so I give people something else to discuss: my controversial opinions.
Granted I didn't pay too close attention to the leak, but I was under the impression the sheet showed the Allied lands, not enemy. So, Sulfur Falls isn't necessarily included.

But more likely in the next set of the block.
We can certainly hope so, but history says otherwise. We never got Enemy Battle lands. We never got Enemy Bicycle lands. I wouldn't hold my breath that Wizards is going to break tradition to a) print the full 10 card cycle of the same lands within the same block and b) give us a rare cycle of lands in a small set.
I would hope I am wrong as getting more of these out there is worthwhile, but I am going to bet on "no".

Dunno about that. For example, we got two outings of enemy pain lands in back to back core sets (M15/Origins) whereas the allied pain lands haven't seen the light of day in 8 years and only have one printing in a black bordered modern frame. Wizards seems to be notorious for splitting cycles with absurd time differences.

Replace Expedition Map with Cranial Plating, and it's a good list.
Tron doesn't need a ban to slow it down. We have Ghost Quarter and Fulminator Mage. Add Surgical Extraction to the mix, and Tron can be dealt with.
I think they banned the wrong Eldrazi enabler, myself. Eye of Ugin is legendary. That alone kept it in check. Unban Eye, ban Temple, problem nerfed but not destroyed.

Eldrazi Tron doesn't give two *****s about any of those cards, it just keeps on truckin.
This is very true. In my experience, you can't really hurt them much with land hate unless you have a quick clock. Or you could just have a quick clock from the beginning, like Affinity for example.
Your post actually reminds me of when I was running UW Control, did double Spreading Seas, Ghost Quarter, and double Tec Edge. I ended up countering a few threats, but ran out of counters and he started resolving essentially game enders. That game was really a testament to how resilient the deck is. Not to mention, I also learned that the deck plays more than 1 Wastes, lol. Looked up the deck list that night...

came here to complain about the price of tarmogoyf, but I see this was already addressed a few pages back. still a great card but sees almost no play in higher tiers for both modern and legacy. tcg player buylist is at $54, which i think is risky.
Goyf is available on ebay under $65. If I had any copies, I would buylist sell them immediately for $54. Fatal Push really destroyed Goyf's advantages, and the incedental graveyard hate people are bringing in for GDS, Dredge, Living End, Storm, etc, also happen to wreck Goyfs. As long as Push is a card and GYs are a hate target, Goyf is going to continue to fall into irrelevance, and the price will follow. I feel really bad for anyone just wanting to play some BGx midrange. Even worse for those who bought in at top dollar.
No kidding. I put my eggs in the "There's no way Gofy will get a third MM printing" basket and bought in when they could be had on the "cheap" due to anticipatory pre-MM17 fear-selling...~$85 a pop. Not terribly disappointing since they've seen plenty of play, but still a bummer; just glad I didn't buy in when they were $100+...when keeping it real goes wrong.
After reading through this thread, it's fascinating to me how much slower the Canadian market moves. Seeing you guys talk about Goyf's at $65 equates to around $80 CAD. Yet the standard selling price is around $120 if you're lucky enough to find them anywhere. Noble Hierarch's don't go for less then $95 a pop either.
I'm big on shopping locally,. But it's rather hard when the prices have this much difference.
I did see something from Aaron on the Twitterverse last night that says they aren't looking at any pre-bannings for Modern. So that's nice. But I'm also wondering whether my Living End deck is going to get caught in the crossfire and have Street Wraith/Simian Spirit Guide ripped out of it. I'm sort of glad I haven't foiled the later yet. That would be a tough one to take ($60cad a piece for foiling).
While I think banning Expedition Map is ridiculous, an Ancient Stirrings ban would be very odd, because Ancient Stirrings isn't even played in EldraziTron. It'd be like, instead of banning Gitaxian Probe, banning Plague Stinger to hit Infect. It's not a card that's being played in the dominant build.
Those are the most likely ban targets and key cards in the decks the pro's are most likely to break.
SSG and Map are perfectly fine and in absolutely no jeopardy of being banned, so buy freely.
Opal and Wraith are on a "eh, I suppose stranger things have happened" watch list for banning but if you're going to play them in the relative near future, buy.
Temple is the only one on here that I wouldn't touch even with someone else's hobby money.

It wasn't the third printing that hurt Tarmogoyf, it was Fatal Push. That one mana black spell has made it almost entirely pointless to play Goyf. I'm not sure when that will change, and in fact, I see Goyf's value dropping further as Jund and Zoo are nowhere to be found.

WoTC, thank you for finally announcing the Modern format, an eternal format where everyone can participate.
Some people have been down on Tarmogoyf, and maybe that's right. But based on some analysis I've been doing, I found that it's appeared in about 11% of the top placing decks at major paper tournaments over the last three months. People are playing the card and doing well, especially Abzan but also Jund variants. I posted before that I thought the card could hit $30, now I'm backing off that. It could happen, but I'm not predicting it...

It's a way to slow down Tron without killing it completely. It's also a tutor, which has a long history of getting hit with the banhammer.
I feel like theres a better chance of ancient stirrings banning than expedition map.
The common complaint is that it digs further than preordain.
