I actually bought one of those $50 proxy power lots. I play a lot of non-sanctioned Vintage where you can proxy 10 cards for free and buy an additional 5 proxy slots for $1 each. So I wanted something better than just a Revised Plains with sharpie on it, and artwork where everybody can clearly see at a glance what's what. ONCE someone looked across the table and said "holy [bleep] are those beta?!?", grabbed one, looked at it, and said "oh, no, they're fake." There's nothing wrong with using fake cards in this manner, and I never once tried to pass them off as real, and never will. Those are proxy cards but they're not counterfeits.
I bought some Power 9 homemade proxies at a local store. They look really sweet and have the online art (which is worse, but more discernible). I bought them in case I make a Cube. The thickness, sadly enough, is more than a bit too thick.
The ones on the right were done by a local artist in 1996 and I kept them in a box this whole time. I haven't even used them once.

Absolutely. My lGS has started attracting great crowds for Legacy FNMs where particular proxies are allowed; it has been a blast. However, calling them proxies doesn't change the fact that they're counterfeits; that's just semantics. My buddy bought a set of proxy Gaea's Cradle for his Legacy FNM shenanigans and I compared one of them with my authentic copy; indistinguishable when sleeved. Considering the exorbitant cost barriers to Vintage/a solid chunk of Legacy, I have no qualms playing against a deck containing a handful of proxy RL cards. However, it's naive to think that nobody has ever bought these self-described proxies online and then went on to pass them off to somebody else as the real deal in person. That's the main reason why I consider any card not minted/comissioned by WotC/Hasbro to be counterfeit; the manufacturer could honestly sell his/her fakes as proxies, but once I open my China AIr Mail package containing 500 Mana Vault proxies, there's nothing stopping me from selling/trading them off for $10/pop. At that point, they're undoubtedly counterfeits. This is why I prefer to play with gold bordered cards whenever they're needed for proxy Legacy night or within certain EDH circles. Despite the MTG community being made up of some great, well-intentioned individuals, there will always be a few ***** birds who have no dignity.
Have noticed that the goyf stocks at SCG have been slow to sell. And a goyf is only 67 dollars now for SP of the 2017. Perhaps the slow sales are making the price drop??
Hopefully, it will go down even lower next month.
At the current printing rate I think 50 dollar Goyfs are coming are way. Tarmogoyf isn't as specially as it used to be, Cheap vanilla beaters are more common now. I need to pick up 3 more myself but I'm going to wait to pick them up.
Honestly, I've already suffered some loss. Bought a 2017 SP goyf for 76 dollars, in about ten days that same SP goyf is down to 67 dollars at SCG. Their 2015 I think is already down to 63. Since the price of goyf is unstable now, I won't buy one next month - will use the money on another card instead. I do hope goyf get reprinted in that iconic masters set... so that the price goes down a bit more.
Is now a good time to invest in more fetches, or is there a high chance that one set or the other appears in Iconic Master or M25?
There is a very low chance either set of fetches appear in either Masters sets, or in the next few years in Standard. The KTK supply is big enough for Modern demand, and I doubt the Masters set will have any shared rares or mythics, since they have so many valuable cards to reprint. If they put any lands in the Masters sets, they need to reprint Horizon Canopy, Grove of the Burnwillows, Celestial Colonnade and the UB manland (I'm drawing a blank on its name). Rishadan Port is another very probable reprint (I don't think it's on the RL). These lands cannot be reprinted in standard without warping the format.
So, yes, the allied fetchlands should be a fair spec... assuming Magic (and especially Modern) continues to grow.
So what are peoples thoughts on the Ramunap draft promo? I have a guy that wants to trade them but I can't get a good feel for the price. He's putting them at $20 each currently and I think the card will be a role player in at least modern.
I feel that the Zen fetches will get reprinted again. Just me, but I think they want the 2 sets equal in price, and then we will not see it for quite some time. Zen fetches will not see a Standard printing, they are clearly laying the groundwork for a new format, and it is known a new format does not want fetchlands beyond Evolving Wilds.
Khans fetches will not see print for some time. I'm thinking 5 years or more. By that time, we will have a new format, and Modern will be the new Legacy. Whether they will continue to support Modern is yet unknown.

I haven't read into anything about a draft promo, but is it the pre-release Ramunap Excavator you're referring to? If so, they're going for around ~$11 on TCGplayer.

No it's the alternate art foil promo. Can BIN for $38 for the set on eBay but trades are a little different. Think $15 is fair or low or high for trade value?

Ahh, that makes more sense. I think it comes down to why you're looking to acquire them. If you're looking to play with them, then that sounds fair based on the standard-art foil price. If you're looking to pick some up in the hopes that they increase in value, then it sounds like a crapshoot. Aside from the fact that a number of players prefer non-date stamped foils, you also need to account for whether or not it'll see enough non-standard play to keep that price afloat. It's basically Crucible of Worlds on a stick and dies to creature removal, but Crucible is more of a novelty card more than anything; it does see Modern/eternal play, but I don't believe it's a key cog anywhere. Personally, I wouldn't bite if I wasn't buying them to play with.
Anyone know if Fraying Sanity is seeing modern experimentation? It seems really good and there was a huge spike in price over this weekend on it. I think anyone playing Modern probably figured out Solemnity pretty fast, but if that guy is taking off I think I'm going to go grab the mill staples because that card looks like it just brought the T4 KO mill deck into existence.

Fraying Sanity is turning into a more "build around me" card with experimental shells in both UBx and UGx. Still no consensus on how the card should be played, OTK with Traumatize vs. control variation of UBx. Regardless, I don't see any of the mill staples going up. After all, the only expensive cards in mill are Glimpse the Unthinkable and the manabase. One last thing, a single reprint is enough to crash any one single mill staple.

I always find Glimpse the Unthinkable kind of a funny one. You'd think wizards would have reprinted that card by now given how aggressively they have been going at it in the masters series, but I suppose the same could be said about a lot of cards that aren't heavily played and are expensive due to rarity like Mystic Gate and it's ilk.

Glimpse the Unthinkable utterly wrecks in a draft format, and in a sealed format. Mill 25% of their deck? When they only have 40 to begin with?
As such, it is very hard to reprint, because B or U can splash for it very easily, and its the biggest bomb there is, taking away 10 random cards (They are already down 8 or 9 on T2) and suddenly they are down to half the cards they started with, and any synergies they had are blown to hell.
Or you are feeding grave recursion way too strongly. You note the next cards, Breaking//Entering and Mind Sculpt were toned back a good deal.
As a UB Mill player, when Craig Wescoe pointed out that Fraying Sanity as a card to hold onto for a few years, I went out and bought 10 at $.92 each shipped (lets see if the seller sends them. I just wish I had bought all 20 he had) and started brewing UG. Funny enough, the deck I ended up with mills the opponent out on T3 and uses 0 Fraying Sanity. I need to put it together and put it to the test, but it seems solid, and should hit the T3 jackpot often enough to make it a threat, maintaining the control necessary to grind longer matches out.

Oh yeah, if I was paying attention to this guy and more familiar with mill I'd probably have jumped on at the low end. I don't think it's price is going to drop anytime soon since like Solemnity, it's going to probably find a permanent home in modern. I think Glimpse the Unthinkable would work fine in a commander product, but they let the price slip too far and now it's in one of those odd "there isn't a huge demand, but the supply is nearly stripped so even without a lot of demand the price is sort of high..." kind of places like the filter lands.

Goyf is available on ebay under $65. If I had any copies, I would buylist sell them immediately for $54. Fatal Push really destroyed Goyf's advantages, and the incedental graveyard hate people are bringing in for GDS, Dredge, Living End, Storm, etc, also happen to wreck Goyfs. As long as Push is a card and GYs are a hate target, Goyf is going to continue to fall into irrelevance, and the price will follow. I feel really bad for anyone just wanting to play some BGx midrange. Even worse for those who bought in at top dollar.

Oh, he's at 54 already in other places. So far, the cheapest copies on SCG are at 63.
Hopefully, the price keeps falling. Looks like this is the long awaited crash of Tarmogoyf prices.
I think a lot of cards are caught in a price bubble at the moment. Tarmogoyf, on the other hand, has felt like a bit of an experiment on WoTCs part to see how many times they can reprint a card before the price starts to come down. I think in this case the meta has become so unfriendly to it as well that it's value is getting just hammered from both ends.

Fatal Push has changed the face of Modern, and will continue to do so. Dark Confidant, Noble Hierarch and Tarmogoyf are taking the massive hit. I'm surprised Spellskite has not skyrocketed. Might be a good buy right now, people may gravitate to it to protect their pieces.
Fatal Push is a $10 card, the new Path to Exile it seems, with $40 foils...wow. Wish I had seen that coming, I was happy to get a few playsets cheap...

the card itself really isn't worth the card board its printed on...does it serve a purpose? Sure its a blue 1 drop that might not be a 1/1. I would not put it in a list and expect to win a PTQ or GP though.
I'd be surprised to see 'goyf in another masters or supplemental set for the foreseeable future. I think they've maxed out on the reprint value on that one. So while it will continue to dip while people sell out and it's not a heavy player in the meta, it will fairly quickly reach a bottom at which point it will start rising again. And if it ever picks back up in play-ability it will spike quickly.
Goyf seems perfect for Iconic masters tbh. He's the MOST iconic green creature they have ever made. I doubt he sits that one out.

This has been my thought as well and the set list would have been finalized right around the time Modern Masters 3 was released.
Between the Ixalan spoilers hinting at some Merfolk support upcoming in Standard, the Merfolk/Goblin duel deck, a doubling up on Masters sets and a tribal Commander product run it seems likely that some needed cards for this deck are going to get reprinted - and seeing as I'm slowly getting the pieces together (Commander fan who just wants a box to open when strangers say they don't play EDH) I was wondering if more seasoned players have any opinions on what's safe to buy now and what would be worth holding off on.
I'm already set for the cheapo Merfolk like Harbinger of the Tides, Master of Waves, Silvergill Adept and a bunch of the little tech and sideboard pieces like Spreading Seas and Mutavault. I honestly don't expect Merfolk in C17 and my money is on two Cursecatchers in the deck for DD MVG and a promo of either of the Lords (preferably Lord of Atlantis with new art!) I think it's reasonable to expect Aether Vial to be in one of the two Masters sets at least, but Cavern of Souls is probably going to be benched considering WotC apparently views it as Mythic now, right? I've heard Spirits mentioned on and off for C17 because of that Taigam guy so I guess it's possible Kira, Great Glass-Spinner could be in that list.
