I'm interested in brewing around with Gideon of the Trials in Modern. Dropping his emblem makes you want more than 4 copies of Gideon in your deck, so I'm looking for the other best Gideon in Modern. Gideon Jura is off the table because his plus helps your opponent take him off the battlefield, which is counter productive for the Trials emblem. So I'm looking at Gideon, Ally of Zendikar.
Trials is about $10 - $12 right now and I picked up a playset. I figure when Ally rotates out, Trials may see more play in Standard and raise the price.
However, what do people think will happen to Ally's price? I can find them for as low as $9 plus shipping and playsets for $45 on eBay right now, which seems like a great spot. But will they drop even further once they actually rotate? For instance, Gideon, Champion of Justice is only $5, but of course he's a terrible walker and didn't see much play in any format.
Thoughts on Ally's price and the right time to buy?
Gideon rotates out of Standard (where he is the 5th played spell and 14th overall card played) in the Fall with Ixalan. He sees fringe eternal and Commander play, but I figure he will drop pretty heavily after rotation and not much until then. I remember picking up a playset on launch and selling them at peak. I want another copy or two for Commander myself, and will be waiting for post-rotation to pick up. At least we no longer have this Frontier hype nonsense around to keep the prices artificially high anymore...
I think Gideon will drop to 5-6 dollars after rotation. That's what happen to Elspeth, Sun's Champion. I going to pick up a couple but I'm going to wait awhile.
At least we no longer have this Frontier hype nonsense around to keep the prices artificially high anymore...
Amen, brother. Despite Ally seeing play in some miscellaneous Modern/eternal decks, I think his value will tank come rotation time due to the sheer amount of copies currently in the hands of standard players. I don't think it'd be unreasonable for him to bottom out around $5 before rebounding. Despite seeing a ton of play and coming from a small set, Collected Company can still be had for ~$12/ea. Ally could definitely end up retaining more value due to it being a mythic/walker and price memory, but I'm expecting it to be a buyer's market once copies start flooding out of standard players' collections and wouldn't be surprised to see play sets available for +/-$20 shipped.
Gideon AOZ sees play in Standard, Modern, and Legacy. I don't think he'll tank hard at all.
Right, if it falls under $10 I'll be surprised: at some point, players will prefer to keep it in their trade binders rather than selling it for peanuts. It has two major advantages over Elspeth, Sun's Champion: you can run 4 in a deck and it wasn't reprinted in a Duel Deck.

Not a fair comparison to Gideon AOZ. Sorin is:
1) Never played as a 4-of.
2) In 2 colors, that do not form a very popular color pair.
3) The highest valued Mythic in a set where all the values is in the 5 Fetchlands!
4) Cannot win the game by itself.

I did a quick look up on MTG Top 8 at all decks from Standard, Modern, and Legacy from 1/1/2017 to today, and found how many decks were running at least 1 copy of Gideon AOZ.
In main deck OR sideboard:
Standard - 779/2557 or 30.5%
Modern - 173/3171 or 5.5%
Legacy - 146/2998 or 4.9%
In main deck alone:
Standard - 721/2557 or 28.2%
Modern - 38/3171 or 1.2%
Legacy - 14/2998 or 0.5%
I don't think the demand for this card will be very high once it rotates out of Standard.
I think the last post speaks for itself. It's going to be tough finding a better price for Gideon.
I myself bought one at a store for $14 2 days ago and the only reason I didn't try to bargain the price to $11, which I thought it should be, was because some of the other cards were undervalued. So it kind of evened out. (Maybe I should have tried anyway?)
I think players are not ready to anoint Gideon, Ally of Zendikar the king of Standard quite yet. I could see this card going up possibly just because of Standard, all the way until it rotates, at which point it would be the price it is now ($11). So if you wanted them any time soon, I feel like it's a solid time to get them. And like others have said before, is it worth waiting a few months to get them for $2 cheaper each? Probably not.

The huge difference is that elsepth got duel decked while gideon didn't. He will be around $8-12. He's even seeing play in that small pox list now and that's slowly gaining traction

How do you guys feel about the price of Collected Company? It's used mostly for modern, so will it go up?

Yes Unlikely that something happens to cause a sudden increase in demand with this type of card, but CC will still creep up slowly like everything else. Of note, very hard to buy out such a recently-printed rare, and most Modern players who want them already have them.
the card itself really isn't worth the card board its printed on...does it serve a purpose? Sure its a blue 1 drop that might not be a 1/1. I would not put it in a list and expect to win a PTQ or GP though.
I agree, I bought my CoCo playset 2 years ago, and the price has doubled since then. It's going to be a $30 card at some point in the not too distant future unless they reprint it in a masters set, then it will probably stabilize in the $15-ish, at least for a good long while. IMHO.

Baring a ban this card is too good to go anywhere but up. I'm sure it will even find it's way to Legacy eventually. (Death and Taxes, Call me, I know you want this.)
Just asking another goyf related question... if given a choice.. what would be the better one to invest money on? The original printing or the Modern Masters 2017 version? Going to buy one tomorrow. Thanks.

It's probably going to be reprinted along thoughtseize in Modern Masters 2019 since it would cover those sets.

Neither is a good investment: it no longer sees as much play as it used to, and its value is buoyed mainly by price memory. I highly, highly doubt you will make money on it. It may steadily gain in price over the next few years (say $5-10 a year, at best), but it will be reprinted again, even if it misses the next MM set. It may also very well keep losing value slowly, since GBx is no longer the top deck of Modern: you're stuck playing a very good, and very fair Modern deck, while your competitors have moved to Legacy-like decks (Grixis Shadow and Eldrazi Tron).
If you want to play it, go for the one that fits the rest of your playset. If you want to invest in a card, I would say Snapcaster Mage is a better target.

None are doing well, but oldest printings do best. That one without the foil stamp on the bottom is second best.
Oh, snappy is a better investement? Thanks, I appreciate the replies. But going to get goyf anyway. Last month I posted on this thread saying that would buy one when the paycheck arrives... and now the paycheck has arrived, so it's time to buy. Just having a bit of a hard time since the money is limited... could order the MM17 goyf + a windswept heath and a bunch of other cards that I need --- or just buy the FS goyf alone.

I like the foil stamp ones they are harder to fake. No card 0ver $10 dollars is a good investment anymore do to wizards reprinting model. Wizards is eventually going to print cards to the point of no value.

nothing in modern that's old is a good investment. You're always one modern masters or a ban away from a bad choice. Especially with high visibility staples like snaps and goyf
