The reason you play magic is to play your favorite deck. I domt play magic to play some lame brew. I like playing with my favorite cards and favorite decsk. No One plays with ONLY cheap brews. No kne. Why? Bc cheap brews are not anyones favorite deck. Its that simple.
That's incredibly narrow minded. I know a lot of people who would rather play fringe decks rather than Tier1 because it brings new styles of play to the format. Just because you don't enjoy it doesn't mean everyone won't.
Secondly, no that is simply not true. Competitive indoor soccer is very cheap, league of legends is cheap, RC plane competitions while costing 100-200$ and thats max price is cheaper, i mean dude i can get a car for the price of a vintage deck. I can get a turbo charger kit for my car for half the price of a legacy deck.
Competitive indoor soccer? So you are competing at the top level of soccer using an old t-shirt and some thrift store cleats? No, this would be the equivalent of casual kitchen table or local game store. Neither of these require you to spend thousands of dollars on a deck. People who play league competitively spend thousands of dollars on headphones, computers, and various other accessories.
sure you dont have to play with that 12,000$ deck. But what if thats my favorite deck? I cant buy it bc of how expensive it is.
This is like saying "You can drive to work without a Porsche, but what if that's my favorite car? I can't buy it because of how expensive it is." There are plenty of cars that are enjoyable to drive that aren't sports cars. Building your own deck is like adding things to the car you have to make you enjoy it more.
No one plays only home brews ppl play the game to play the cards they like and the deck they like. What you say is never the case and simply just not prudent. The point is yes sure theres cheap ways to play but to enjoy it to its fullest meaning playing a deck you like it costs alot.
There are plenty of people that play home brews and for home brews I mean casual kitchen table play. You can find perfectly competitive inexpensive decks here ON THIS FORUM. Developing competitive has tons of inexpensive decks that play great. I have tried a half dozen various decks off of it that cost me about ~100-~200 in trade.
If i cant play with the cards and deck i like than i just wont play. I'm not spending 300$ for a home brew that is straining to be competitive, filled with cards that I don't really like. And ill point out that's $300 for mediocrity. So yes the game is very expensive.
The deck I play I payed >$300 for and I enjoy it more than any tier 1 decks I've tried.
The game in itself is really what you make of it. If you feel that you can only enjoy something by spending a lot of money then you're going to struggle enjoying anything in your life, magic or otherwise. The best advice I can give you is to buy the staple cards for the deck over time. Whenever the cards get reprinted pick them up or whenever you have extra money grab a couple of pieces. You won't have your deck overnight but it is fun to build over time and your patience will save you a lot of money. I built my first deck in late high school and bought the core cards that were absolutely necessary to play the deck, then slowly worked on the sideboard and lands as reprints became available. No, in the first month or two you probably won't be winning a majority of your games but you it allows you to get used to playing the deck and by the time you have all the little parts pulled together you will be proficient and knowledgeable about what you are playing.
Value is good. But Dredgevine isn't supposed to be about value. It's supposed to be about V-8; 2000 pounds of nitro boosted war vegetables. The more velocity, the better.
Modern:
DredgeVine EDH:
Gisela, Blade of Goldnight
Anima Standard:
No its not like saying that at all. I HAVE to drive to work its a necessity. Dont compare necessity to leasure activities it doesnt work.
Which is why it is such a drag that this leasure activity costs as much as rent.

Should I wait to purchase Mox Opals?
I fear two things:
1. Increase in price
And
2. Possible banning
The second doesnt belong here so i want to discuss the first. Should i wait to buy mox opals until iconic masters or am I risking a very heavy price increase?
I know its difficult to predict if it will be in there but there are many ppl here more experienced than me with this so what would you guys do? Wait or buy?

As others have said, it entirely depends on whether you plan to play the deck a decent amount of times in the near future. Opal is one of Modern's more expensive cards, so it's no easy decision.
A lot of people like to talk about Opal and Simian Spirit Guide being banned but I don't see a single good reason for either of them being banned in the current meta. If a deck with either became dominant then sure, but that's not a thing right now. That said, it's the type of card that could have a target should it see dominant play.
It's an absolutely necessary card for Affinity, so if that's the deck you want to play then you need to buy them. The question is when. The answer, imo, depends entirely on how much you plan to play in the near future. It's a toss-up on whether it's reprinted so I wouldn't even factor that into my decision.
I do plan onplaying it but right now i have dregdevine deck and Etron which are perfectly fine and perform perfectly fine. I dont play very competetively but i enjoy playing and building these decks as i like to keep them and intend to keep them for the rest of my life built as is. Affinity was the next on my list so that being said I am very patient when it comes to building however I know the volatile natureof the market and Im not rich i just want to save as much as possible.
I remember when foil opals were 30$ each but at that time i was building dredgevine. So i didnt buy in than before i built Etron, both opal and ravagers were at 50$ each so i built Etron. And now ravager is down to 30$ while opals are still at 50$ with no real reason to drop and alot of potential to rise.
So i think i will buy in. But you cant blame anyone on trying to save or be smart about when to buy.
Ravager actually dropped a few dollars today down from 33 to 28.. i just bought the only 2 ravagers on tcg that were below 30$ at mint condition so it looks as though there maybe a slight drop.
Thank you for your input

Look, it's completely pointless asking whether a card will be in a future set when literally nothing about that set has been released to the public aside from the name and release date. It's a Masters set, we know their effect on prices, more or less. That's it. Opal might be in it, it might not be. Absolutely impossible for anyone who doesn't work at WOTC to say, so if anyone tells you anything other than '50/50', they're bull*****ting you and you should ignore them.
If you want to play Affinity, you need Opals. If you're worried about Opals getting banned soon, don't buy into Affinity. Nobody knows what will happen, but Opal has been around for ages and Affinity is easy enough to hate out that it doesn't become too oppressive in the format, unless they give it some new goodies that push it over the edge.
That said, we just had an artifact-centered block and this didn't happen, so I'd say we're good for now. Do keep in mind that there is no overlap with other decks when it comes to the Affinity card pool, aside from Opal being in Lantern and some fringe decks like Tezzerator.
So make sure Affinity is 100% the deck you want to play. It's a strong, competitive deck but its play style is pretty straight-forward and this can get boring really fast for some players. So proxy it, test it online, play with it until you're absolutely sick of playing it. If you wake up the next day and still feel like vomiting your entire hand out on turn 1, then this is definitely the deck for you and you should get your Opals - because currently, there's nothing on the horizon to indicate a viable price drop.
I want it pretty bad i love the deck, the art on the cards, the colorless factor, etc etc so thank you i think i will biy into them now. Thats all i needed to hear

Do you guys know why senseis divining top is still 10$.
I remember when deathrite was banned it sunk dowm to 1.50$ pretty quickly.
Why is this not the case with top? Its banned in modern and legacy.. why is its foil till $50< ?
There are probably a few things going on here. First, it's in demand for both EDH and Vintage. Second, it's a very unique card so collectors and casual players will want to have copies. I'm sure casuals and EDH players see this as an ideal time to buy in, which would help keep the price up. And third, price memory is a real thing in this game. Sellers want to take as small a hit as possible, so a card like this will drop over time instead of all at once.
Why do you feel deathrite shaman was different in terms of how much it dropped immediately after its ban especially considering it was only banned in modern with it still being played in legacy and EDH?

Top was also just reprinted in Eternal Masters and sees play in almost every Commander deck that players own copies for.
So, Fatal Push will be September's FNM promo. Will it have any impact on the price? Now it's climbed to $10 and looks pretty strong there.
Yes in the short it will drop but prices should rebound . I think it will follow Path to exile, it had a FNM printing didn't suppress its price if anything it drove demand. I'm holding on to my play set. I'll probably move out my Foils it depends if the art on the fnm version is bad or not.

I've been saying this to everyone and getting a deaf ear. Its basically Path's future. More prints, but also more demand as black is the more popular color. And just like path warped standard play into white color, its doing it to black. They reprint it and it will STILL be following paths... path.

I still have a lot of players asking for them . We need more copies to meet the demand which is still high. Push sees play in every format just like Path to Exile.
I wish those people who believe Fatal Push will drop to 2usd can wake up.
This card hardly drops below 5usd.
I preorder 2 playsets, with $4 each, and buy two more playsets with $5 each after the release.
This is basically the PTE level you can see how much PTE is it now after so many reprints.
I personally don't like the artwork (well, i don't really like most of the art nowadays), i prefer the normal one, but the foiling will attract a lot of people. Probably September will have great attendance numbers at most stores.
In another topic, what about Kalitas? Rotation is a few months away and I've following it but i believe it can drop since it doesn't see a lot of play in eternal formats. In Standard i've seen it in action in some Zombies lists and it's pretty amazing paired with removal and lords, also the exile clause is pretty useful against other zombie decks or embalm, i can see it maintaining its price for a few months at least.

I would wait until rotation to pick up Kalitas it should fall to around 6-8 dollars and rise to 10-12 in a year or so. If I had them I would just hold on to them. Kalitas sees play in modern but mostly as a 1 or 2 of and there is a large supply in standard headed are way.
Guys lets please get back on to modern price specs.
Like does anyone know of any new short term, small profit spec targets right now or just the usual long term?
Zombies picked up wins in Standard, and I believe can make the transition to Modern. Messenger's and Gravecrawlers I think will make good targets.

We've gone from Magic cards to firearms and back again here. Remember, this is about Magic, and Modern specifically. Please keep in mind that in the future we need to evaluate our posts and make sure the content pertains to Modern. Asking about whether or not to buy is not complaining about prices: $600, while being the bottom of tiered deck prices in Modern, is not always within reach for everyone. We are here to help each other make the smartest Modern financial choices available, not say that because a deck is relatively cheap for the format there is nothing to discuss.
--CavalryWolfPack
The reason why I state that 600 is not expensive for a tier 1 modern deck is that its just reality. If you want to compete at the highest level of play you have to have the cash to drop on this game. Ultimately magic is an expensive hobby and if you can't compete then there is nothing wrong with buying into a budget list. At the same time it's fruitless to ask people what is going to be printed in the next set because no one here will know.
Anyways right now the best tier 1 decks to spec on are: Elves (cheap creature base and I expect CoCo to go up), burn: (A lot of the deck got cheaper based on reprints from masters sets) and affinity (The cheapest tier 1 deck that's consistent).
