Hey guys im building affinity and all i have left to purchase are arcbound ravagers and mox opals.
Currently arcbound ravagers sell for lightly played (which btw is usually always NM in my experience) for around 33$ give or take. On mtgstock i saw the price curve was around 18-20$ Around tarkir and spiked to 50$ at oath of the gatewatch and has now come down to low $30s. My questions is should i purchase my playset now or should I wait?
I dont want the price to raise on me again and i dont have the economic smarts nor the knowledge of the current state to predict whether or not to buy in now or wait a little longer.
What should I do?
Affinity is one of the cheapest decks in all of modern so I don't see why you are complaining about its price. If you like it, I would buy in.
Maybe because $120 is still a lot of money for most people? Modern is expensive, it's not exactly saying much that Affinity is one of the cheaper decks.

Might as well pony up and buy them. Each event you're not playing is potential winnings/fun lost. $120 now and $100 in maybe 2 months time isn't really anything. You could have won much more than that $20 difference in credit or other prizes in that 2 months.
That aside would like to add that Affinity is cheap yes but that 'cheapness' does come at a cost. The cards can't be used anywhere else other than maybe the hardened scales deck. It's not like Abzan Company where the deck as a whole is more expensive but many of the cards can go into multiple different decks.
Guys please opinions on japanese cards. Lost a 3/3 creature against Japan celestial colonade. This guy played all creatures and spells in english cards, but some cards in his manabase was japanese. I dont registrated this really ( my brain say its all fine and all english to me lets attack his empty board)...and i am sure it is a Kind of legal cheating. It is not ok, but i know legal. I Hate such people. I never forget colonade normally, but with this Tricks it can happen one time in 3 years and such people take advantage of this
If I am a customer spending premium amount of dollars, I expect a premium service. Jund falls into the category of a premium deck costing more dollars than a majority of the rest of the format. I'm not getting the desired performance ratio per dollars spent out of the Jund deck because WOTC decided to make the format more diverse.
Would anyone be willing to speculate on where the price of Cryptic Command will be going in the upcoming months?
Without a strong and prominent Uxx deck in the format (no, UW Control at <2% doesn't count), it's going to stay relatively cheap. It also can be reprinted at any time in a master set or supplemental set (printed 5 times so far). Between the lack of a premiere Uxx deck for the format and the continual reprinting, this card is a long way from being $50+ again. Pick em up if you need em, but it does not feel like a strong spec target.

Affinity as a deck costs around $600 dollars. That is pennies compared to other competitive modern decks. You are also asking us to do the impossible in speculating if the cards are going to be in the future sets as if we have any intel on that. I don't understand why so many people ask these questions. None of us are wizards employees so none of us know if these cards are getting reprinted. So it just comes off as complaining about card prices.

Well, there is a big difference. If you pay rent with that money, you will never see it back. If you make car payment, you might see some of it back when you sell the car. But with mtg-cards, especially modern and legacy staples, your money usually isn´t gone. its just tied up in the cards you bought, and the moment you sell them you get your money back. sometimes you get a little less, sometimes you get even more.
It doesn´t matter if you see magic cards as an investment, because today, it simply is one.

I 'surly' don't disagree. My point was that it's an idiotic thing to say someone is complaining about the price of their hobby by saying Affinity is a cheap deck by Modern standards, just because they asked a simple question regarding price trends.
You should buy cards you think are fun or that you would enjoy playing at a price you are willing to pay and consider the money spent on enjoying the cards. If you find yourself in some sort of economic bind in the future you could sell them, but I wouldn't buy them and expect them to hold value for you to rely on in the future. MTG lion did a video about this topic a couple of weeks back, relatively speaking it is inexpensive compared to other hobbies such as sports and probably about the same as video games. Normally I think MTG lion's video's aren't always the greatest but I felt that video in particular really hit a good point. When you buy a deck in most cases the deck won't need too many expensive changes to keep it playable and even the input cost is equivalent isn't horrible when compared to other hobbies. When you put money into other hobbies you aren't expecting to get that money back, you put the money in for enjoyment. The best example of this is commander, which is probably the most casual format and almost everyone who played magic after commander was a semi-established format but has quit since then keeps and updates their commander deck. It's an extremely casual format and since the life on a commander deck is about as eternal as you can get people don't have an issue spending a bit more to update the deck.
Value is good. But Dredgevine isn't supposed to be about value. It's supposed to be about V-8; 2000 pounds of nitro boosted war vegetables. The more velocity, the better.

This is a rabbit hole I don't know how we got down. I will say that telling someone on a tight budget "This is an investment" feels kind of the same as those people who look poor people in the face and say "If you just cut out that trip to Starbucks on Friday, your financial troubles would be over." It's super disingenuine to think the folks who are on super tight budgets are looking at these cards as anything other than fun. As a budget player, the last time I sold something I bought specifically for a pet deck was literally 5 years ago, and that's as someone who has seen the value of my decks go up almost 300% in that time. That money is gone when you purchase unless you're grinding this game to make money.
That being said, if budget players are looking into Affinity but can wait, it stands to reason that deck is going to get persistently cheaper for a while, as they have reprinted something for it in almost every Masters set.
I appreciate all the advice especially those of you recognizing that im not complaining im just trying to be smart about how to spend money.
I would like to add that mtg is not cheaper compared to other hobbies.
I will compare it to guns and target shooting.
One of my favorite guns is a walther P99 which costs around 600$ which is what affinity costs. Ammo box of 50 for the range costs 20$ which is roughly the same to participate in a modern event in mtg.
I think this is the best comparison as both hobbies are essentially an investment as both my gun and modern decks can be sold for the same or close to the same price i bought them at. And i can say they both cost essentially the same.
I also would like to say that for the most part no one really sells their things unless circumstances force them to. So when you pay for your hobby or for rent that money is gone unless of course you absolutely must sell. However you could sell your home as well and in this case the home is a far larger and necessary investment. Which is my initial argument in saying rent is 600$
But as for my initial question I decided to buy into the ravagers and mox opals. I personally believe that mox opal will be reprinted in iconic masters because 1. Is it very expensive and 2. Is is an iconic card for arguably one of the most played and consistent deck in modern, affinity.
Magic is not inexpensive compared to most other hobbies. People love deluding themselves in this regard.
If we just look at gaming you can buy a room full of board games for a single modern Magic deck, to say nothing of Legacy or god Forbid vintage. Likewise you could probably buy an entire set of RPG books.
In terms of video gaming the price of one good Modern deck can set you up with a PC or just about that will be good for several years of gaming as well as being an indispensable tool. The actual cost of games has become a joke in terms of hours vs $ if you're willing to be patient and target the Steam sales.
With consoles you will start off cheaper with the machine but the added cost of games will eventually turn out to be less profitable than a PC.
As for TCG's, hearthstone, regardless of what one thinks of it or not is still much much cheaper than magic. It took me the better part of several days to get most of one deck and probably would take me a month of free grinding to craft the rest. 0$ invested. Impossible in MTG.

Its a good game, but its not in the same category, nor does it belong there (in fact it is the inverse, often embarassing to mention among those not acquainted with the game) and it is severely overpriced for what it is.

To play competitive magic it is relatively expensive, but please name a competitive environment that is less expensive and even in a competitive environment the game is not expensive. You can brew for hours with a couple of different cards that are interchangeable within your deck, board games are fun for one maybe two hours at a time.

but despite your broad range of experiences you must have never tried this style of magic? Duel decks, old starter decks, pauper, pauper cube, and basically any format in a casual brew setting. These styles of play are dirt cheap and easily as fun if not more fun that competitive. I personally enjoy casual formats more because they allow for brewing with janky combos.
Next time before you accuse people of being Delusional or mad maybe you should realize that just because you haven't tried to have fun without spending a lot of money that it's not possible

There are plenty of brew worthy decks that are > $300 and easily playable at a competive local level. > $300 beats console and pc on the spot. If its so expensive, why do so many students play it? I know quite a lot of people who don´t spend much money on magic, because they don´t need/play with high-end cards.
What does MTG as a whole even mean? Does it include the cost of playing vintage? Fly and hotel to Gps?

I have had many, many hobbies in my life. I am pretty much an old man. I've had everything from modifying cars to collecting guns to growing and grooming plants to trying to meet as many cute females as possible. Magic can be the very most expensive if you don't go about it in the best way. It's like anything else. Right now, I have wasted gobs and gobs of money foiling out decks when I could just be more thrifty and just play what I already own. Also I could sell cards immediately when they spike, which I don't always do, even when I have extra copies or foil copies.
Magic as a whole includes gas, money spent for tournaments, money spent on cards and supplies, and anything else that Magic affected. Back in the days, I used to be able to pay for all of that and much more just by winning tournaments or placing. Nowadays it's so much tougher, especially speculating on card prices that already Presale for waaay over their estimated value. It's not impossible, but just less fruitful and less easy as before. I think a delicate balance in Magic spending is letting go of cards you're not using, but not doing it so often that you keep losing value.
*For what it's worth, I don't go about it the best way nowadays but most of that is on purpose.

Like does anyone know of any new short term, small profit spec targets right now or just the usual long term?
Modern Elves just hit tier 1 status not too long ago and the deck is still flying under the radar. I'm not sure if the announcement of tribal Commander 17 is keeping prices at bay, but the deck appears to be the real deal in the current meta and matches up very well against some of the other top tier archetypes. Although the traditional G/B & Abzan builds are most common, Nissa, Steward of Elements has opened the flood gates for a ton of brews, most notable being Simic and Sultai. I've really enjoyed playing the Abzan variant and although I haven't had much time to play with my Sultai build, it seems to have promise. I think Simic Nissa will find a Modern home somewhere down the line, but it might be a while before she's cracked. Until then, I'd suggest picking up some of the traditional Elves staples while they're still reasonably priced. Gilt-Leaf Palace is a 4 of in most decks and can still be had for ~$10 despite having one printing in Lorwyn. Dwynen's Elite is also a 4 of which is phenomenal and still within bulk-spec territory at ~$0.50/ea. There are also a few staples with multiple printings which could still jump up once/if the deck keeps performing well: Ezuri, Heritage Druid, Elvish Archdruid, etc. Since I've already been playing Abzan Elves and wanted to give Sultai a whirl in addition to speculating on the archetype, I ended up trying to kill two birds with one stone and just bought the cards to build Sultai without breaking down my Abzan build. Plus a sizeable amount of copies of Dwynen's Elite...
The reason you play magic is to play your favorite deck. I domt play magic to play some lame brew. I like playing with my favorite cards and favorite decsk. No One plays with ONLY cheap brews. No kne. Why? Bc cheap brews are not anyones favorite deck. Its that simple.
Secondly, no that is simply not true. Competitive indoor soccer is very cheap, league of legends is cheap, RC plane competitions while costing 100-200$ and thats max price is cheaper, i mean dude i can get a car for the price of a vintage deck. I can get a turbo charger kit for my car for half the price of a legacy deck.
sure you dont have to play with that 12,000$ deck. But what if thats my favorite deck? I cant buy it bc of how expensive it is.
No one plays only home brews ppl play the game to play the cards they like and the deck they like. What you say is never the case and simply just not prudent. The point is yes sure theres cheap ways to play but to enjoy it to its fullest meaning playing a deck you like it costs alot.
If i cant play with the cards and deck i like than i just wont play. Im not spending 300$ for a home brew that is straining to be competitive, filled with cards taht i dont really like. And ill point out thats $300 for mediocrity. So yes the game is very expensive.

Asking about whether or not to buy is not complaining about prices: $600, while being the bottom of tiered deck prices in Modern, is not always within reach for everyone. I think this is the best comparison as both hobbies are essentially an investment as both my gun and modern decks can be sold for the same or close to the same price i bought them at. And i can say they both cost essentially the same.
I also would like to say that for the most part no one really sells their things unless circumstances force them to. So when you pay for your hobby or for rent that money is gone unless of course you absolutely must sell. However you could sell your home as well and in this case the home is a far larger and necessary investment. Which is my initial argument in saying rent is 600$
But as for my initial question I decided to buy into the ravagers and mox opals. I personally believe that mox opal will be reprinted in iconic masters because 1. Is it very expensive and 2. Is is an iconic card for arguably one of the most played and consistent deck in modern, affinity.

Magic is extremely inexpensive compared to other hobbies, this not a delusion, it is a fact. People who say otherwise are creating excuses as to why they can't play the game. To play competitive magic it is relatively expensive, but please name a competitive environment that is less expensive and even in a competitive environment the game is not expensive. Board games are nowhere near as utilizable as magic cards so do not even bring that ridiculous argument up. You can brew for hours with a couple of different cards that are interchangeable within your deck, board games are fun for one maybe two hours at a time.
Magic is perfectly enjoyable outside of the competitive environment
but despite your broad range of experiences you must have never tried this style of magic? Duel decks, old starter decks, pauper, pauper cube, and basically any format in a casual brew setting. These styles of play are dirt cheap and easily as fun if not more fun that competitive. I personally enjoy casual formats more because they allow for brewing with janky combos.
Next time before you accuse people of being Delusional or mad maybe you should realize that just because you haven't tried to have fun without spending a lot of money that it's not possible

Can you not play standard or modern without paying a couple hundreds dollars for a deck? It's competitive modern, I'm not nitpicking at All? You are nit picking more than I am. There are plenty of brew worthy decks that are > $300 and easily playable at a competive local level. > $300 beats console and pc on the spot. As for other hobbies pretty much any hobby taken to a competitive level blows magic out of the water. Gaming, sports, even hobbies such as models/model trains.

I have had many, many hobbies in my life. I am pretty much an old man. I've had everything from modifying cars to collecting guns to growing and grooming plants to trying to meet as many cute females as possible. Magic can be the very most expensive if you don't go about it in the best way. It's like anything else. Right now, I have wasted gobs and gobs of money foiling out decks when I could just be more thrifty and just play what I already own. Also I could sell cards immediately when they spike, which I don't always do, even when I have extra copies or foil copies.
Magic as a whole includes gas, money spent for tournaments, money spent on cards and supplies, and anything else that Magic affected. Back in the days, I used to be able to pay for all of that and much more just by winning tournaments or placing. Nowadays it's so much tougher, especially speculating on card prices that already Presale for waaay over their estimated value. It's not impossible, but just less fruitful and less easy as before. I think a delicate balance in Magic spending is letting go of cards you're not using, but not doing it so often that you keep losing value.
*For what it's worth, I don't go about it the best way nowadays but most of that is on purpose.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Modern Elves just hit tier 1 status not too long ago and the deck is still flying under the radar. I'm not sure if the announcement of tribal Commander 17 is keeping prices at bay, but the deck appears to be the real deal in the current meta and matches up very well against some of the other top tier archetypes. Although the traditional G/B & Abzan builds are most common, Nissa, Steward of Elements has opened the flood gates for a ton of brews, most notable being Simic and Sultai. I've really enjoyed playing the Abzan variant and although I haven't had much time to play with my Sultai build, it seems to have promise. I think Simic Nissa will find a Modern home somewhere down the line, but it might be a while before she's cracked. Until then, I'd suggest picking up some of the traditional Elves staples while they're still reasonably priced. Gilt-Leaf Palace is a 4 of in most decks and can still be had for ~$10 despite having one printing in Lorwyn. Dwynen's Elite is also a 4 of which is phenomenal and still within bulk-spec territory at ~$0.50/ea. There are also a few staples with multiple printings which could still jump up once/if the deck keeps performing well: Ezuri, Heritage Druid, Elvish Archdruid, etc. Since I've already been playing Abzan Elves and wanted to give Sultai a whirl in addition to speculating on the archetype, I ended up trying to kill two birds with one stone and just bought the cards to build Sultai without breaking down my Abzan build. Plus a sizeable amount of copies of Dwynen's Elite...

Secondly, no that is simply not true. Competitive indoor soccer is very cheap, league of legends is cheap, RC plane competitions while costing 100-200$ and thats max price is cheaper, i mean dude i can get a car for the price of a vintage deck. I can get a turbo charger kit for my car for half the price of a legacy deck.
sure you dont have to play with that 12,000$ deck. But what if thats my favorite deck? I cant buy it bc of how expensive it is.
No one plays only home brews ppl play the game to play the cards they like and the deck they like. What you say is never the case and simply just not prudent. The point is yes sure theres cheap ways to play but to enjoy it to its fullest meaning playing a deck you like it costs alot.
If i cant play with the cards and deck i like than i just wont play. Im not spending 300$ for a home brew that is straining to be competitive, filled with cards taht i dont really like. And ill point out thats $300 for mediocrity. So yes the game is very expensive.
