Completely forgot about tax season buying. That's a great point. Thankfully all I need from this set is Voice of Resurgence and a couple Damnations.
That's really the only way I can justify doing silly things like dropping $320 on four foil Scalding Tarn all at once...
Damn. I don't do the foil thing. When I bought into Zen fetches I think the highest I paid was $25 per for Tarns and all 20 (4x each of the 5) was under $300.
Yeah, other than price sideboard cards and a few flex slots, these are the last big pieces to finish foiling my Delver list.
I have a feeling the fetchlands are bottomed out, demand for these is huge, and people will buy a ton for resale down the road. The first week where stores and people are cracking all these boxes will keep them around the price they are at now but once the supply slows down they are going to rise. The other cards in this set are not going to rebound like the fetches. If you need fetches I would buy them now.
It's still opening weekend of the set and supply hasn't had time to truly effect prices yet. Things will continue to drop for *at least* the next week.
There's this akward balance between people and stores actually opening MM3 and player waiting to buy MM3. It is my personal impression, for what i see in my town, that demand is HUGE and people are just "artificially" waiting for the set to drop even more, but they're dying to buy staples. I think prices will not hold long at this low point, and they'll climb back in a short time, unless the print run is not large but really gigantic.
Hey folks, wanting to ask people's opinions of the foiling in this set. (Especially since MM15 was awful and I've not heard good things about masterpieces)
So are the foils from this set worth it?

They look very good, IMO. They are much brighter overall compared to MM15 and some have great use of selective foiling areas. Some of darker art doesn't have as much pop though, so it depends a lot on the original art. Attached are some examples from the box I drafted.

That's what I've been saying since Fetches were revealed.
I opened 14 boxes (2 to go) and the #1 request I get is 'Are the fetches for trade? Tilt ensues when I inform them, No, I'm looking to finish the partials I have into another playset.
People failed to understand the elemental math. Johnny opens a box, gets 2 fetches. Well, he needs 4, so we didn't remove a demand for 2 from the masses, we just created a demand for 2. And that's if he can trade the 2 he has into the 2 he needs, or he doesn't decide to just buy 3 more of what colors he pulled, as well as 4 of the colors he needs. Only the most foolish or desperate are trading fetches for non-fetches.
Just curious. Has anyone talked to store owners and asked how supply stacked up to other MM releases, now that it is officially released?

Some of the foils in Southern California, USA were double printed. I got a Pyrewild Shaman that was double printed. It looks like the whole writing was done in Bold.
But then I traded for a foil Gifts Ungiven from the same store and it wasn't double printed. I think it's only on the uncommons from what others said. I heard a story of someone opening a pack with only foil Burning-Tree Emissary double printed.

If you need to play those fetches, just buy them now, you're still getting a fantastic deal, do you want to wait months to possibly save a few dollars?

You should really read the reddit article that Rogue Love has in the post above yours.
that article also references an MTGGoldfish article that is also excellent:
TL:DR version: wait at least 2 months after release for best pricing, and it continues on until 6-7 months after release before prices start their inevitable climb upward. This information was gleaned through the release of MM2 and the price trends that the set had. It likely held true for EMA as well, though I'd imagine that MM1 didn't follow that trend due to the severely restricted supply.
Just curious. Has anyone talked to store owners and asked how supply stacked up to other MM releases, now that it is officially released?
From the 8 LGS owners I spoke to over the weekend, was roughly the same as it was for MM2015. Of those 8 LGS, 6 were out of product as of Saturday night. 1 had a case (4 boxes) left out of their allocation, and the last LGS had 3 cases (12 boxes). The last LGS was charging $245 a box and was the most expensive of the area.
None have heard anything about another print run and none knew if they could or would get more.
looks like I am not the only one to notice the average is sub-par on value. One of my drafts had one damnation and one fetchland in the whole box. The whole box totalled out to maybe 75 bucks. Seeing a LOT of that. Not many fetches, next to no lilies or goyfs. The value for those opening has been abysmal, with the average value maybe $150 or so if you dont plan on trying to sell uncommons for pennies each.
There certainly is less of a flood than I expected, nobody wants to let staples go for these prices except those who were trying to make a profit and need to dump stuff, which generally goes straight to the shops instead of the trade/ebay market.
the card itself really isn't worth the card board its printed on...does it serve a purpose? Sure its a blue 1 drop that might not be a 1/1. I would not put it in a list and expect to win a PTQ or GP though.

Kevin over at Rogue deckbuilder got more boxes in recently so there's definitely more out there. My guess is that they are trying to limit how many hit the market at once so getting more boxes may be hit and miss. That and the set is still considered a "limited" print run, so there is that as well.

I forget where I heard the connection made (I think it was a Commander podcast), but I think it was that because MM17 has a similar print run as MM15, but does NOT have a corresponding GP to eat up 50,000+ packs worth of product, there's tons of "extra" boxes and packs making their way into stores and onto shelves to sell. Granted, those packs opened at GP Vegas still got into circulation, , when you combine that with the lack of WPN exclusivity, it gives a pretty strong illusion that there is "more" out there, whether its true or not. This should affect price suppression as long as there is a steady stream of supply being opened; so at least the next 6-8 weeks.
There is a difference because of the GP's. Between those GP's and the drafts around the world, a LOT of product got dumped on the market all at once.
Fetchlands change the game entirely, though. I'm still of the mindset that the fetchland price drop wiull bve extremely shortlived, and that by May, the prices will be climbing. Not to their original positions, but I can see $75 Tarns and $50 Misty's by June. This print run simply is not large enough to satisfy demand, and once prices start going up, it's going to be a hard spike as people rush in to get theirs before it is too late. It really demands a standard printing.
If the only difference is the lack of GP's, which those cards get into circulation, the difference will be minimal. A shift of a few thousands boxes being opened at a GP spread out over all the lGS means maybe a box or so per store more. That is figuring same print run the same as MM2015. I dont consider a box or so .. A LOT of product per store.

Collation is just so bad. If you get a good case, it's really really good. If you get a bad case, it's really really bad. How good and how bad?
1st 2 cases: 2 Goyf, 2 Lili, foils Catacombs, Mesa, Lili, Goyf and Cavern. 3 Snapcaster, 2 Cavern, Linvala, 3 Tarn 5 Catacomb. Heavier on fetchlands in general, but 0 Misty.
2nd 2 cases: 5 Entreat, 3 Domri, 4 Bonfire, 3 Temporal, 2 Olivia foil, 2 Olivia, 3 Resurgence, foil Entreat, Goyf, Linvala foil, 1 Snap, 0 Lili, 5 catacomb, 4 Misty, Cavern, 2 past in flames.
Oddity: 2 Desecrator Demons in the entire 4 case lot. 1 Iok in the first case.
I have a pack by pack breakdown on the first 14 boxes, I should post that somewhere. All this is off memory, rather than looking at my records.
