Are there any cards in Modern, not reprinted, from the days when print runs were lower (ROE and earlier) that are under a dollar and see play? I know it's very specific, but it just seems like without reprints everything has gone way up (Bauble) and I don't want to have never heard of a card until the price hits orbit and want them. Bonus points if it does something unique
This is great for finding that kind of information.
haha, I was talking more to the people using the decks that don't get much publicity, the ones who were aware of Bauble before it got big, it was 'what unknown card do you think will spike?'. there are 20 non-core sets in the grouping i asked about, and dozens of unique decks in Developing Competitive, I was hoping for someone who had knowledge to share. for example, if a year ago someone had asked me this, I would have said 'I'm not great at this, but I haven't seen another card that does what those Baubles i have sitting around does'. and I made enough when I sold mine to pay for my box of MM17 at $170. I am not an idiot, and if you are not interested in a helpful response, this was not aimed at you

Modern legal, never reprinted, in a set with low print run, and less than $1?
To be honest, there are many of the cards fit into those categories. Will you collect all of them?
Find stuff that has play value. I bought 100 Sudden Shock, because, well, a shock with split second? How can that not be good? So I bought a bunch, and within a year, it spiked. Same went for Ghost Quarter. Stuff people need, but don't realize yet.

Ideally rares, and it has to be played in some deck that is just not really on the radar. I have looked at some old sets, and it strikes me as being a small enough number that this wouldn't be too bad at all

the card itself really isn't worth the card board its printed on...does it serve a purpose? Sure its a blue 1 drop that might not be a 1/1. I would not put it in a list and expect to win a PTQ or GP though.
There seems to be much debate about the print run.
'My lgs says this'
Well, I know a distributor, and he says this'
Etc.
Regardless, people would be advised that the lack of 3 GP's opening packs means that there are a LOT more cases available to the public. Also means that supply will not reach the public as fast as it did in 2015.
Every LGS owner I have talked to around me has said there is no signs of more product being produced. Yes those few cases that went to the GPs will be in circulation, but in the end there will be no more total product. This means some stores may get 1 more box, not case, in their allotment.
We can believe there is no second print run when fall comes around and there isn't a second release. We all saw what happened with eternal masters and it looked something a lot like this...

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!

Inkmoth Nexus dodged a reprint and is barely moving. What do you think, is it a good target for speculation?
Recent Promo, and with Infect on the decline only a single Tier 1 deck exists where it is played. I'm gonna say it's probably a long term pick, real long term. With the way Magic has been going these days, I wouldn't make large gambles anymore.
Wait for a bit. Yes, Abzan is good and you can easily transition into Jund if you ever decide to do so. Jund will always be good.
The current metagame is very much in flux still and it's hard to say how it will end up looking. That said, Death's Shadow is top dog right now and Abzan is one of its worst matchups.
Tron will always be a terrible matchup so it's up to you to decide whether you want to deal with all the big mana decks running around at the moment.
Yeah, about 60-90 days after release is when the prices are at the all time low for these sets. If the set has more than one wave or not also will impact how long those cards stay at the low end of the price scale on the singles market.

It can and probably will dip still, since we are in pre-order season. No one has opened a Modern Masters 2017 pack yet, so the supply of the reprinted cards is mostly the same as last week. Once a set is released, there is a massive supply influx to stores, and the prices will decrease.
In general, prices are higher during pre-order season. That is not always true (Walking Ballista and Hangarback Walker were both 2-4$ cards during pre-order, while Jace, Vryn's Prodigy was the cheapest of the flipwalkers), but that only applies to first print cards of unknown potential. All the cards of MM17 are of known quantities.
Footsteps doesn't grant the grabbed creature haste. That makes it a non starter right there with the sac at end of turn penalty.
I think you want to look at stuff that's played, but has potential. Boros charm has a lot of play in it, but what about the other charms? Dimir Charm has a really sweet bauble like effect that messes up their next draw amongst other uses. My Twin deck of old used to put it on an Isochron Scepter and give them nothing but lands or anything but lands starting turn 3. Thats a strong potential for a spike if anyone ever found a way to abuse the effect.
Other cards to look at closely are artifacts and enchantments. There are so many of them that do almost broken things, lots of deck builders are sitting there with a card thinking, if they ever make X.... Puresteel Paladin Cheerios deck were one of them. Mill is waiting for one last piece to blow up, and there go the Hedron Crab, Breaking // Entering, Jace's Phantasm etc with it.
One card I really like to blow up someday is Altar of the Brood]. It's a wincon that ignores summoning sickness.
Lands. Lands that have a specific function are always a threat to bust out.

Mill will never be a T1 deck in Modern. The same things that shut down discard and burn, shuts down mill. It can be fun to play around with at the local level though. I cant see any of those cards to 'blow up' any time soon.
Well.. it doesn't matter what deck someone chooses to play, in the end of every post you read things like "but tron is terrible" "worried about tron".. 95% of the decks have problema with tron.. So I don't care..
Well then by all means, build Abzan. It's a great deck.

If this is surely the case, then I should continue to hold back on purchasing MM 2017 singles despite the prices on the ones I'm looking at are slowly rising as of this week?

The attached super accurate and scientific graph should illustrate the price trend of a popular and commonly-played card. It will start high(ish), fall to a floor level, then either spike back up or creep back up based on whether or not there is a strong top deck that plays it. If it remains a relatively unpopular card, it may remain low or continue to trend low. It all depends on the card and how much it is played in the top decks of the format.

Alright, I'll keep holding off. Waning patience was about to get the better of me.
Best time to buy MM17 singles will likely be 5-8 weeks after release. That's where most cards will be in the low floor part.
