@Spitlebug: That's a UB control deck that happens to have drownyard as one of its win cons. You know that, he means dedicated mill decks.
More on topic dedicated mill decks are bad because they don't affect the board and often having cards in your opponents graveyard helps them win. Think of them like bad burn decks, but burn cards are more efficient at taking an opponent to 0 life than mill is at taking someones deck to 0 cards.
It might be helpful to watch some of the feature matches and deck techs from the recent Modern Pro Tour & Grand Prixs on Youtube. It might not cover the entire metagame but it will at least give you a good starting point on what's being played currently.
Watching online modern streams as well can be very helpful for either watching and learning how to play a deck you want to try vs other decks, or seeing how a deck you might play against in the future plays out from the pilot's perspective. Lots of good info out there.
I've renamed this thread to something a bit less inflammatory, hoping that this keeps people on topic. I think it's a legitimate point to discuss, so long as we aren't breaking rules and being jerks to each other. Hopefully the renamed thread will set a better tone for the discussion.
Honestly, Modern is interesting and attractive precisely because it is so diverse. That diversity is partially a function of past decks from older Standard and Extended seasons, but you don't need to know the history of every deck to know the deck itself. I admit that there is a steeper Modern metagame learning curve than in other formats. But the best way to overcome that is just to keep playing games and keep learning what cards/decks do. In the short term, that might seem daunting and annoying because you feel unprepared for everything. In the long term, however, you come to appreciate how much diversity is in the format and how interesting the various matchups can become.
So keep playing games and ask lots of questions after every game. Most players are more than happy to talk about (read: brag about) their decks, so they will give you all the info you need on what they were playing, why they were playing it, and how the decks work.
Wasn't there an Esper mill deck at Richmond that used Archive Trap to nail people using fetchlands? Had stuff like Glimpse the Unthinkable, the split card that mills like 8, and a bunch of standard blue cards like Cryptic Command and Mana Leak? Snapcaster Mage would make Glimpse rather ridiculous.
i dont know if people remember but when valakut was still around in standard "crab blade" was a thing. It used hedron crab, jace 3.0, SoBaM, and archive traps to mill people out. It had great matchups because the big decks at the time all used fethches and search effects so archive trap almost always hit. Snow white was a mill deck of sorts as well considering it main wincon was grinding stone.
