Is it just me or does Affinity need a nerf? It just isn't fun to play against a deck that can empty it's hand turn 1 and force you on your back seat right away.
No, Affinity does not need a nerf.
There is a plenty of hate cards that pretty much demolish it, if you don't pack the hate for it then plan on not having a great match against it.
The reason it's doing so well in my opinion is because of all the pod and combo hate going on which leads to less sideboard hate for Affinity. You have to respect it.

It's always like this, is a cycle: a good deck has great hate against but the hate is narrow --> the deck doesn't accomplish much in the last period --> no more much hate in SB --> the deck resurges

No way affinity needs a nerf. If anything, it needs a boost, o simply to leave it as it is now.
So are we all going to freak out if affinity wins? Ton of pod... but if affinity takes it down, what does that say?
I don't know (Affinity has actually won against Twin Pod in the finals)...but maybe it was predictable that the only Twin Pod player in the Top 8 shredded the Melira Pod players (or at least one of them) on the way up. The Different Pod mirror is generally in Twin Pod's favour, especially when Twin Pod boards in Fiery Justice and kicks 1-3 butts with it (and that one butt could be Linvala).
Some of those 9-18 decks are pretty cool but overall I am very disappointed with the T16.
EDIT: I am, however, happy to see that none of the other combo decks made it to the T16, which was more or less what any reasonable person could predict. No Storm. No Infect. No Amulet. No Reanimator. None of those decks that people are constantly complaining about but don't actually put up results reliably, especially in big fields, and especially when people are ready for them. This suggests that Modern is, as a format, ready to handle decks like that.
It's just that I just saw Affinity wreck Twin, the deck I am planning to build in Modern.
So, because a deck you plan to build lost to Affinity, a deck who's post-board is highly favorable against Affinity, you think Affinity should be the target of a ban?
I mean I don't believe in the conspiracy I proposed for the record, but I could totally see SGC totally organizing something like that because they have control of breakers and stuff and incentive to do it and sell cards by promoting celebrity players on top archetypes. It could also be said that pros are pros and show up all the time in the top levels of play because they are near perfect mechanical players and also 'good'.
I mean, before the T8 very few pros were in the top 32....unless there were and I didnt recognize the names. I could see SCG doing that also, "Whelp...might as well throw LSV in there since hes a pro anyway!" seems favoritism. Funny thing is...he got trashed on by (ironically Affinity) 2-0. The DQ'd Jon should feel great getting a "win" from the grave.

jon got got dq'd because of jon. get over it.
Relax.
Anyway, Affinity going strong in the tournament, seemed good in a field of Pod.
Doesn't Tron have bad Affinity and Splinter Twin matchups?
I play G/r Tron and Twin is not a very good matchup especially game 1. My experience has been that Affinity matchup is more around 50-50. I've played affinity about 6 times now in tournaments and if they don't get a very aggressive start and I don't get my sweepers they win.
It's not an easy matchup but I still like to see it because I feel like I have a good chance of winning (I've won quite a bit against affinity) but again take that with a grain of salt because that's been my experience. I wonder if any affinity players agree?

My understanding is that it's not one of their better matchups, but it's not one of the worst either. They're somewhere inbetween 45% and 55% which means they have a good shot at winning it. Then there's Pod which they completely dominate. I don't know how they do against Twin but 7/8 of the decks in that top 8 can be beaten by Tron, and half of them are practically byes. So like I said... it's a very good field for them, if they could get into the top 8 in the first place.

Shatterstorm, Creeping Corrosion, Ancient Grudge, Kataki, Fracturing Gust, you name it... this is why Affinity/Robots is here to stay. If you don't SB for it, shame on you.

I've heard that RG Tron has a salvageable Affinity match-up (4 maindeck Pyroclasm/Firespout split, 3-4 maindeck Oblivion Stone, Karn might do work, play Ancient Grudge/Vandalblast/Electrickery post-board if desperate), and some RG Tron anti-combo sideboards are built to rip Twin apart (Slaughter Games/Torpor Orb/enchantment hate/Combust), possibly at the expense of other combo match-ups.
But 4 Melira Pod players look ripe for RG Tron...

Thanks, didn't catch that. Here's hoping for a tight finale to this tournament.
