Mom is one of those cards that is gloriously fair but won't work due to design philosophy shift re: protection. A modern templated version that gave hexproof and indestructible (or even just indestructible) instead of protection from a color would be superb though. Even without the unblockable clause I think it'd see some play. Being able to defend against colorless critters and sweepers would be a fine compensation.
Sure, they could do that, but it wouldn't be playable. You need the ability to push through an attacker for it to have proper viability. Just giving hexproof or even indestructible isn't good enough.
Shame, if they've truly moved away from protection as a keyword.

Modern: G Tron, Vannifar, Jund, Druid/Vizier combo, Humans, Eldrazi Stompy (Serum Powder), Amulet, Grishoalbrand, Breach Titan, Turns, Eternal Command, As Foretold Living End, Elves, Cheerios, RUG Scapeshift
I'd like to see Mind Games somehow make it back to Modern. It's a super cheap and useful buyback spell that was really underappreciated in the Tempest era.

WoTC, thank you for finally announcing the Modern format, an eternal format where everyone can participate.
I dunno. If it gave hexproof + indestructible I think it'd be playable, since you can still ruin combat math and the added resiliency to sweepers is a bonus.
The Goblin Piledriver reprint was also after they dropped protection from evergreen status. As far as I know, protection is still fair game when a set/card needs it, it's just not evergreen anymore. That's at least what they said when it lost evergreen status around the release of Origins. There may have been later statements.
Moving forward, protection is moving from what we call evergreen to deciduous. It's a tool in our toolbox that we're allowed to use, but it's not something we expect to use in every set. Think of it as something like hybrid mana—that shows up from time to time in a set that needs it. It isn't, however, something you should expect to see all the time.
Swords to Plowshares
Hear me out, it doesn't make any deck faster, it doesn't help present a broken situation. It's pretty much strictly defensive, it helps White have a presence and more of an identity in Modern.
I know it's basically a better Path, but I feel that it's extremely hard for an answer to really be too powerful for the format

Project Booster Fun makes it less fun to open a booster.
The card I want most in Modern is Carrion Feeder, because a BW Zombie deck with Gravecrawler, Diregraf Colossus, Wayward Servant and Carrion Feeder would be the most fun I can imagine getting to run in Modern.

Well, I can saw a woman in two, but you won't wanna look in the box when I'm through.

Counterspell needs to be reprinted in Modern. By this point, in such a fast meta, it kills zero decks and helps blue. Being double blue is also a drawback. I've had so many games where Mana Leak quickly becomes irrelevant as time goes on or if an opponents threats can easily dodge under it. Seriously, there are threats that have to be answered left and right in the 1 and 2 mana zone. It will never be printed in Modern under the current rules of cards requiring a Standard set first, but it's fine to dream. It's on my list of unlikely dreams with Boondock Saints 3, Mario RPG 2, and the Shadows of the Empire movie.
Crop Rotation would be pretty relevant in the last couple desert sets.
And could let Ruin Ghost replace Mother of Runes in maverick.
I feel like Tron, Scapeshift, and the Eldrazi decks are already good enough without Crop Rotation lol. I would totally run four to put an Inkmonth Nexus into play.

The weaver could find a home as a singleton in the +1/+1 counter decks we have today. And Moment's Peace is a much better fog.

Crop Rotation is too good.
Turn 2: Ruin Ghost and Crop Rotation
- Ith: Skyline Cascade
- Mom: Sejiri Steppe
- Bojuka Bog
- Sylvan Library: Halimar Depths
- or whatever land schinanigans
Turn 3: KotR & Ruin ghost activation
Turn 1: Mother of Runes
Turn 2: ...
Maybe not as efficient, but a similar net effect, and much more versatile. Are you saying its unplayable because Mom costs 1 less mana to activate?
@Rabbit: You didn't mention modern maverick. RIP
I strongly disagree. Especially since it makes a great turn one play to turn your forest into the final Tron piece.
