Now that is a cool counterspell design! Could easily be extended to modern or just straight up printed to see if it sees play. Countering goyf and most removal spells and almost all aggro spells seems pretty legit. The ability to scale late game seems nifty.
Agreed. Prohibit would be near perfect for modern with no issues passing through standard. Part of the reason why Counterspell can't be standard legal is because including it punishes people for playing strategies that involve cards at higher mana costs. "Cool Dragonlord Atarka, let me just counter that and be up 5 mana" feels REALLY bad for most players who are trying to play with cards that have interesting designs at higher mana costs.
AMONKHET got revealed with Nicol Bolas as it's overlord. If there is ever a time for an innocent blood reprint... I'll take that and a busted Nicol Bolas please

Strongly agree. It even fits contemporary Standard design philosophy of forcing players to choose between specialized answers (e.g. Negate vs. Essence Scatter).

I'm not much of a competitive player but I've watched a lot of coverage recently, and I was thinking to myself that the format would be very different if these cards were around:
Disrupt is largely fine. Generally inoffensive, although you have to be careful about adding the Spell Pierce counters that tend to benefit fast combo.
Pyro would be great. Burn wouldn't run it, which means red-based decks would get a semi-FoW kind of effect. Are there any linear decks which would run this? Burn in the SB probably, but not main.
Ankh seems like it would be bad. Format doesn't need more damage to punish slower strategies.

TBH, is Snuff Out even better than Dismember? I mean, the no black clause is a real problem, with Kalitas, Tasigur, Gurmag and Rhino (and now also Anafenza) seeing relatively much play. Yes, it costs nothing, but it is a rather steep drawback that you cannot target those high powered threads.

What I play or have:
Modern/Legacy
either funpolice (Delver, Deathcloud, UW Control) or the fun decks (especially those ft. Griselbrand)

Tas/angler are only played in one deck and Kalitas is seeing less play because abzan company is tier 2. Snuff out is also a free spell.

Have not contributed to this for a while.
What I want and the chances of getting them....
Primal Order (0%)- Punishing greedy 4 colour "fair" decks with mono g stompy decks is great in my book. Your strategy is to play all best best and most forgiving removal cards and complain you were beaten by linear decks, which you will complain about until they are banned. Hmmmmmmmm. I find 4 colour BG-X decks ("fair") to be worse than the degenerate combos. Seriously, you want a deck that can destroy any type of permanent and plays all the best dudes almost without drawback? What is the point of the colour pie and deck selection if your deck can do it all and do it better than everyone else? If those degenerate combos so often complained about get removed from the format we would all be playing 4/5 colour decks on the value train. I would love those decks to fear a green stomy deck that puts a fast clock on and finishes with a 4 mana enchantment when the wipes happen, and PO is that type of enchantment.
Daze mentioned previously would boost control and Merfolk style strategies, but would probably put stupid combos over the top somewhere. Infect with daze- ouch. I love lands back to hand and free mechanics, so I will have Ensnare - players playing spells when tapped out leads to interesting games. Hard to make free unbroken spells, but Ensnare is a great example of a balanced one that makes design of critters safer. The manaless green discard fog I would have back too. Take that Mr Infect. Pyrokinesis can be added to the list. I might actually get these, someday, but I am not holding my breath.
Stasis (minus 1000% or hell freezing over) - I just love Stasis and cards like Fevered Visions, ok without Forsaken City it would never be busted, but even two turns of this is enough to irritate a certain kind of player. Can you at least give me Freyalise's Winds . No? Oh well....
I would happily take any one of these......
Winter orb (0%) - mana restriction for all, players take mana for granted' nowadays, we used to have to be careful.
Armageddon (o%)- mana restriction for white - it won't happen, maybe a catastrophe type modal spell @6 might have a slight chance.
Smokestack (1%) - always produces choices for both players, and surprisingly good games with Johnny cards like Trading Post.
Static Orb (0%) - I guess killing people t2 with Goryo's is ok, but slowing the game down is not fun.....
Sulfuric Vortex (o%) would be a nice change from Planeswalkers and Critters.
Tainted Aether - interesting effect similar to smokestack in that its symmetry can be broken and the card wins slowly. Still won't get it, but I can dream.
A whole bunch of Reserved cards like Pendrell Mists, Orim's Chant, Back to Basics, Humility I would love to see back.
Back to reality- almost none of this is ever coming back at any point.
I'd like to see Daretti, Scrap Savant in Modern. Affinity doesn't want him, and even though he can rummage two cards a turn he's only really good in some sort of artifact reanimator strategy. I think if you make it to turn four in this format you deserve an Inkwell Leviathan or two.
I really hope we get Prohibit in Modern one day. If they want our counter magic to only answer certain kind of threats that's fine, but give us one that specially punishes cheap, efficient spells.

Modern has so many ways to punish mana bases already. Why do we need even more ways to do that? Mono green already has Choke. Judging by your like for Mishra's Workshop type cards, maybe vintage is the format for you.
Masterpiece cards can be played in any Limited format they're opened in and in any Constructed format in which the card is already legal.
So this will not add cards to the card pool (just like how Strip Mine is not Modern legal even though it was an Expedition), but will increase the number of copies of that card in circulation.

Control Magic I really feel like this would help blue the most without just being an argument for a counterspell reprint
They can't print that card in standard. Way too strong.
Bologna. Two mana flip Jace is fine, two mana 4/5 Vigilance is fine, Collected Company is fine, Languish is fine, Summary Dismissal is fine, but Control Magic is too strong? Completely disagree.
What about a card like gerrard's verdict?
With white black fast lands being released shortly, I am all for the W/B 8-rack list.(one of the few 8-rack players)
While a card like this wouldn't break 8-rack by any means, I do think it would make the deck much more competitive.
Also why would wizards not just use modern masters to reprint cards that are too strong for standard but okay in modern?
I am sure that's been brought up already but makes sense to me.

"Discards two cards" effects mostly cost three mana these days. Getting an upside on top of that is unheard of at two. Plus Gerrard is long dead, so it can't be reprinted outside of a Time Warp set unless you want to artificially create a W/B hate cards archetype in Legacy by giving it a functional reprint with a different name. Which you don't.
They decided when they created "Masters" sets that the cards wouldn't be legal outside of formats they're already legal. Hard to go back on that.

Which is why i made the spiel about cards being reprinted in modern masters because i know discard 2 for 2 cmc is too strong for standard.
I know Gerrard is long dead, wouldn't be hard to even just print a card with the similar effect and make it 2 life per land discarded.
I just feel there are so many cards that are just slightly too bad for legacy, and would fit perfectly into modern.
This is just an effect i would love to have.
We have wrench mind, it's just kinda meh sometimes.
I hope we see new reprints with mm17. One can dream anyway
Anyway I want blue to have some love.
Counterspell, Daze, and Deep Analysis
This I feel would give blue the tools it really needs to disrupt.
Daze I feel is the riskiest of those. I would love to see these with a few bans and unbans, specifically hitting combo and linear decks (Become immense, Git probe, Manamorphose, groyos vengance), but allowing more card filtering (ponder). (I'll drop this topic here though as I don't want to break the rules more than I have.)
These changes would hurt and help combo/ linear decks at the same time hopefully leaving them strong but not gamebreaking. Blue control and tempo would hopefully see the largest boost.

Abolish and Pyrokinesis
Modern - Cheeri0s (building), Belcher (building), Lantern (building), UW Control (building)
RIP Magic Duels. Wizards will regret what they did to you.
I don't think Abolish would do much to the format. It's still a narrow answer that only a few decks can play.
Pyrokinesis, however, would be a great addition. I think it's been suggested in this thread and I agree it would help.
Anyway I want blue to have some love.

Fire // Ice might actually be good for the format. It's a versatile tool, but not overpowered.
