Seems like the only way to get out of this "go through standard lock" would be push the legal sets further back.
What sets do you think would be fair to unlock for Modern without breaking the format; even if it would require a few cards to be banned?

A format that would be Mercadian Masques-on. It would bust Modern into 50 million pieces, though. It is also the first set with no cards affected by the reserved list. It will never happen, but I've always hoped for MM-on format.
I would love for more good burn spells and burn is not a linear deck. Obviously you never ran a real burn deck and not a rdw deck. Also moden burn has to be 2 or 3 color to be close to a burn deck. And still it ru s 12-16 creatures, that's rdw, not burn.

Make all cards that have been printed in the Modern border Modern-legal.

This but with a more extensive ban-list and I would be totally on board. Plus then I won't ever have to explain again why owl familiar isn't modern legal lol

I would have to take a closer look at what that banlist would look like, but I think offhandedly I like this idea. It would be a great way to add cards to Modern, although the banlist would be pretty massive.
The only reason I think they want to avoid this is because they want the freedom to print crazy stuff in commander, without having to ban a ton of stuff all the time. Could you imagine True name?! But we would get Fore of Will and Cabal Therapy.
I'm prety sure having Force, Daze, Counterspell, Therapy, Deathrite, Hymn, and Mom would put down the most "unfair" decks.
Yeah you could go all in T2 with Berserker and Invigorate in Infect, just to get your creature Unsummoned and your Vines of Vastwood Dazed.
Yes, you could drop your whole hand turn 1 with Artifact lands in Affinity, your opponent could also Toxic Deluge for 1 off a Dark Ritual.
You could build 5-color Zoo/Stompy, but would you in a ABURDual-less enviroment where Burn has Fireblast and Price of Progress?
Reanimator vs Griselhoard? Omnishow vs Twin? Miracles vs Tron? The format would be massive and most likely that's why pros would despise it. But considering how close some modern decks are to their legacy versions, I cannot help but wonder if it wouldn't be much better for the community at large.
I really think it's worth trying, and neither really necessary bans (in contrast to "we can't do anything else to fix this" bans like Ponder/Preordain/Top) nor powerful hate would affect T2 or Modern's development and future as much as never being able to print cards the format really needs because "they'd break standard".
One thing I'd like to see is Baleful Strix. It delays aggro decks not named Burn and forces a removal spell from your opponent, but also replaces itself as soon as it hits the field.
The by far easiest way to add cards to the Modern card pool would be via the Modern Master sets. If they change the police of Modern by saying, they can add cards to the Modern card pool via MM, it would help a lot (or would make things easier). I mean, they could reprint mechanics, which don't fit in the current Standard environment (like Kicker/Cycling,...).

What I play or have:
Modern/Legacy
either funpolice (Delver, Deathcloud, UW Control) or the fun decks (especially those ft. Griselbrand)
I think that Counterspell would be too strong in modern but other three cards seems fine.
Definitely not. With how mana efficient cards are in modern and how fast modern is 2 mana answers are borderline unplayable.Sure counterspell will be played but all it will do is stay revelant throughout a grindy game just like removal spells do. The uu cost also makes it so it can only be in heavy blue decks.
I have never understood why people think Counterspell would be too strong in Modern. Hell, it is almost underpowered considering some of the things we an do in this format. Overall I would love to see all 4 cards come into modern.

In play: Jund Death Shadow, Grixis Control, Eldrazi Stompy, Ponza
In the yard: RUG Delver, Kiki-Chord, Grixis Twin, Mardu Control, Smallpox, Jeskai Control, Jeskai Delver, Assault Loam, Elves, Deathcloud, Eggs, Storm
I just got back into the game after a very long absence and these two cards are old favourites of mine. Is there a reasonable chance they might get reprinted?

Maybe because wotc like counterspells at 3 mana. Absord would be a pretty huge boon for control against burn. Non of these are good enough for the mainboard though and it is probably to play dispel against burn since it has applications against combo also.

It is just because people in general hate countermagic.

I tend to think its more because paying two mana to unconditionally remove nearly any non-land before it hits the board is amazingly strong. It is unfortunate it took Wizards as long as it did to learn this. I like counter-magic; I don't mind paying a fair price for it.
Memory Lapse would be fun in a format with so many fetches. Do you fetch and shuffle away the spell, or do you draw then fetch, which can limit what land you get (shock vs basic). I would just hate to cast a spell, have it countered, draw the spell again, cast it, only to have it snap'ed back and countered again. If lapse is reprinted I could see Dark Confidant's price going up just to push pasted the first dead draw.

It is a trade off. Countermagic is extremely timming restrictive but more versitile while removal is more narrow but timming is not an issue. Removal is better when behind while countermagic is better when ahead or at parity. I believe removal spells and counters should more or less have the same costs since the strengths and weaknesses seem to balance each other out. In modern removal will still be better than counterspells in fair matchups due to how popular resource denisl midrange decks (bgx) decks are.
This so much. Innocent Blood will make it so attrition decks would not have to go to red for bolt. Bolt will still have an instant speed advantage but it won't be a necessity.
I want Rishodan Port, fair "land destruction" that (probably) wouldn't break standard and wouldn't immediately be jammed as a 4 of in every deck like Wasteland would. Also doesn't invalidate tron, that is a thing.
Innocent blood is my main one, I want to jam Pox in modern so bad.
also, some more cyclers from urza block would be nice because Living End needs more options.
